I just purchased Poser 5. I want to know if I can take a dress, for example and use the grouping tool to cut it into a different style?
and then can that be copied and saved as a new piece of clothing?
the poser 5 manual explains very little about anything, it assumes that I already understand 3-d and must also understand Poser.
can anyone help?

Yes. :) There are multiple ways of going about this, with the grouping tool central and no other application needed. You could also simply make a transmap, or in some cases, just hide the groups that aren't needed. I'm not going to describe all of these methods in detail. Start with the manual. Use the tutorials available here. Use the search feature and read up on back-posts. You are going to need a certain base comfort with Poser before you go about altering clothes -- you should at least be able to import, export, and change textures around.

The quick and easy way is to use transparency maps to shorten skirts, sleeves or coat lengths.
