I just tonight was looking for a model in the Bryce freestuff, and took a link to a site with free downloads.

I noticed they had Bryce mats as well and looked through them, and noticed a pack of 6 marble types that were more than familiar, looking at the thumb at first I thought they were mine, so to be sure, I dl the zip and thumb to to go through them.

I loaded them all onto objects and just stared at them, no they weren't mine (i have a little gizmo embedded in mine that would tell me if they were) but dang they were sooooo familiar....

Turns out all six are the mats that come installed with Bryce5, the site owner didn't create them, just zipped them up and is giving them away....I wasn't quite sure how I felt about this, I was relieved they weren't mine, (I really don't like putting the smackdown on anyone) but still....

How do you feel about people giving away installed presets as a means of bringing people to their site....?

You know as well as I do, it takes VERY little to make up your own personal/custom presets. Even a custom preset that is a handful of clicks away from one that comes with Bryce isn't asking TOO much, imo. AS

It certainly isn't being very creative. Only folks who already have them will be able to use them. Sounds like wasted bandwidth.

AS, I can see making some changes, varying color, phase, noise, etc. but I checked the settings and they're 'exactly' the same, identical.....

It's too bad ;o( If so inclined, what one can do is direct DAZ to the site, after that its up to them. It's what we (staff) does when we run into that sorta thing, since it is offsite. AS

Yeah, I let'em know, I've decided the web is just 'that' kinda place, after reading the ebots about snaggers in the Copyright forum, it just seems hopeless to make people understand that if you didn't make it it's not yours to do with as you please, just cause it's on the www....=(

Even though I don't know all that much about it even I could come up with something unique and interesting if I set my mind to it. As easy as textures are to create in say photoshop, to just give away presets is not only lazy and rude but resides probably not in a place where they could weather any legal rebuttal in a reasonable manner. However, L. Ron Hubbard once said that the courts were a good place to keep out of if you could unless you were a paid officer of the court, as they drain not only your resources and creativity but sometimes wasting years of your time as well; hauksdottir here on Renderosity once said words to the effect that the only thing you really own is your own time - if you waste it, it is gone forever. Seems to me that the reasonable thing to do is to consider how much time you have to waste on such things, let the right people know about any infractions you find as annonomously as possible and move on. I've come to the conclusion that it is impossable to make others understand the difference between right and wrong; we can only hope that they have the capacity and the valor to do this on their own. - TJ "You can lead a mouse to a library but you can't make him read." - Darth Bikermouse
