I'm trying to style hair, but every time i get it almost to the point i need it, the strands up near the roots wind up laying underneeth the skin of her head... soo, is there a way to prevent that? i thought collision detection would help but apparently its not btw- i'm trying to get the "parted in the middle, with the front edges kinda pushed back over the ears with some falling over the ears" look...

Collision will only function during a dynamic movement process, and actually has absolutely nothing to do with styling. I do not, at this time, have much more than basic notes about this scrawled in my terrible handwriting on a few index cards, but this is done using the falloff slider on the hair stying tool. Note as well that hair dynamics are not meant to be used in the styling process -- they are meant strictly to be used with the various animation modifiers (wind force) and will actually "wreck" any style (much like happened to me today when I went to the store...) Although this doesn't help you now, target date for my series on using the Hair room's tools is Septmeber 21st, immediately following my series on using the cloth room. Both will be in the Poser 5 Exlporation Forum at RuntimeDNA, where the Material Room nodes are currently being investigated (the pause while I move notwithstanding).

Not sure I understand exactly, but if you are running a simulation (calculating dynamics), check the "do collisions" box in the Hair Room. Then check collisions for all the parts of the body (head, neck, etc.) that will collide with the hair in the properties tab of your parameter dials.

Talking of collisions, every time i check the collisions box and run dynamics it causes a hang... is this a bug? If si, is there a fix. All service patches have been installed. Jack

A bug would be easily reproducible across systems of varying specs. Assuming you are referring specifically to hair collisions, odds are you haven't set up the parameters effectively, or the mesh you are collidning against is very dense and the system is taking a while to do the calculations. Some hair calculations -- especially with multiple groups and high density strands -- can take several hours to complete.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh right, that sounds about right. Thanks for that Jack

Also according to CL when I called them the collision detection only works on the head, although it worked on the neck for me. They told me it will not work on the shoulders and the rest of the body so if the hair is long you are out of luck on it. Marque

I've worked in the Hair room for quite a while as my store shows and I can definately confirm that collision detection does not work whilst editing (Styling) the hair. The only way to avoid the roots going into the head is to adjust the sliding vert scale and GO SLOWLY. It is also best to use the dials Up, down and back to get the hair pieces roughly in shape before styling and remember once you have started styling NEVER touch those dials again as it will destroy any styling that you have done. I have some hair tutorials on my site HTTP://www.neilp.co.uk that might help althogh they meant as a basic introduction. Good luck NeilP
