Looking at the castle from this angle, the wall facing the director is well lit.

However, rotating the director slightly produces a much darkened wall surface. If the Sun is casting the light, why does the lighting on the wall change? I'm so confused. :( Thanks to rodluc for the Rural Castle. Grazie!

I think you've got "link sun to view" checked in the sky settings. this will place the sun not in worldspace but according to camera space, so if the camera is rotated the sun rotates with it.

What! Who thought of that feature? Thanks Rayraz. Grrrrr!!!! Link sun to view, link sun to view. One teeny weeny button hidden in the sky lab has risen my blood pressure by 10 points.

turns on some relaxing lounge music and speaks with soft hypnotic voice "close your eyes, listen to the music and breathe in and breathe out, let all the teeny weeny button stress fade away. And when I snap my fingers you will go and fix your scene and be proud of your work :)" snaps fingers ;)

Thanks for the much needed humor. :D Some of these little "hidden" settings drive me nuts too.
