Developing the thought further... What I find most fascinating in the latest DAZ announcement (Bryce5.5 price) is the 'object linked embedding' type of manner by which DAZ Studio will be available from within Bryce. They say: ** The ability to launch Studio from within Bryce and pose figures.* Presumably this means that once you've (re)posed a figure, you come back to Bryce and the figure is changed in your scene. At least that's how I read it. The original story about DAZ Studio was that there would be a base version for free, and then a whole bunch of plugin options offering advanced features - including advanced rendering features. Studio has obviously given them major headaches just to build the base version - it's still in open beta. That doesn't indicate that the advanced features are going to be flying out the door. So maybe buying Bryce is another option for DAZ. Their 'intention-ware' pronouncements for Bryce6, or SuperBryce, or BrycePro, or whatever; certainly include all the fancy options originally suggested for Studio. And with the 'poser' interaction between Studio and Bryce, what would be the point of developing Studio plugins when the features are already available in another DAZ product? It's pure speculation of course, but it isn't an unreasonable guess that Studio didn't work out the way DAZ first intended; and buying Bryce was a way around that. So here's my prediction. DAZ Studio will remain fairly limited except in relation to dealing with 'figures'. Bryce will essentially become a kind of render 'plugin' for Studio. Note that I am not suggesting that Bryce will literally become a plugin - with that OLE type interaction there won't need to be an amalgamation. What I'm saying is that Bryce will be, ipso facto, the advanced render option for DAZ Studio. And if DAZ is successful in making Studio the replacement to the Poser program as the main arena for using its content (House Mouse, Koshini, The Girl, French Maid set for Vickie, etc, etc), then Bryce becomes the new extra shiny window on that world. ... I think we'll be seeing some changes in the Bryce gallery... ;-)
I think we're already seeing changes in the Bryce gallery. Since the acquistion of Bryce by Daz, there are more and more Poser objects being incorporated into Bryce scenes. Some people like that idea, others don't. Me...I couldn't care less either way. All I really care about now is Daz not screwing up Bryce.
DAZ doesn't seem to really be having ANY problem with Bryce's code, they couldn't say enough about the team they have working on it.
And, I would bet there is far complexity with building Studio, then re-vamping the exsisting Bryce code-wise.
But, we will probably see more advances in Studio coding, now that Bryce is in the picture, I would guess.
Also, I'm in agreement with a some of PJF's theory there. ;o)

Okay, again...if I'm to be quoted, do it in full, don't edit me to make it sound like I meant something else. please/thanks. ;o) I said; "Companies who have bought a new program won't offer upgrades prices to a new version, especially when the old version sells for $60." NOT; "Companies who have bought a new program won't offer upgrades prices to a new version" *Also...Orios examples, do NOT take into account that the new owners of the programs weren't selling the FULL program for only $60, which DAZ was/is. Most of the time the new owning companies would offer the upgrade price of around $120. New owners would just have to pay a full price. ;o/ *And, it doesn't take into account how little amount of time DAZ has owned Bryce before they are offering an upgrade, which I would assume would be the reason for a .5 upgrade, instead of 1.0 upgrade. That and anything to do with figures, and comapatibility of, is just ridiculously complex. Just trying to keep it straight, is all. :o) AgentSmith

"Companies who have bought a new program won't offer upgrades prices to a new version" That is completely false. The opposite is true. See the cases of: - Carrara (MetaCreations to Eovia) - Bryce (MetaCreations to Corel) - Poser (MetaCreations to Curious Labs) - Painter (MetaCreations to Corel) ALL the above companies offered upgrade paths to customers who purchased from the previous companies. And note that the new versions were whole number versions, not just intermediate decimal number versions. And some of the above companies also offered for free intermediate decimal number versions (such as Carrara 1.1 and Painter 6.1) All this is not the exception, this is the standard.
