Subject: Photoshop 6.0 program error.

I get a program error when I try to feather a selection in Photoshop 6.0. I tried selecting using the lasso tool and the marqee tool. I was wondering if I am missing something basic before I call tech support. Thanks, Andres.

What platform are you on? What exactly does the program error message say?

goido ( ) posted Sun, 19 November 2000 at 1:13 AM

I am on a Compaq 200 MHZ, Windows 98, 128 megs of RAM, 15 gigs of HD. The error message says " Unable to perform feather command because of program error" I changed the feather radius from the default 3 pixels to 2 or 1 pixel and I did not get the error screen.I had a 8 megs file with 240 dpi resolution. Thanks, Andres.

I'm on a Mac with 5.5. Did you try a re-install?

goido ( ) posted Sun, 19 November 2000 at 6:57 PM

My scratch disk is 2.5 gigs free. I usually do not run any other apps with 6.0 because 200 mhz cpu is modest at best. I do have a Wacom tablet and even tough it has the latest driver sometimes it stops running and I have to restart. I will check the efficiency bar and see how much of my RAM is being used by Photoshop. The last resort is reinstall since I would have to reinstall all my plug-ins presets. Thanks, Andres.

Thanks for your help anyways. I may have to reinstall after all. Yesterday I was doing a collage with the alt click mask procedure but with some of the layers it would reveal them and then Photoshop would start painting black. I trashed the offending 2 layers and started again and it worked fine. Thanks, Andres.

I have also experienced these errors... Doesn't seem to be related to memory running out though. I suspect it's a bug in version 6. This error has trashed my work couple of times on different machines. The other one has 512 of memory and the second has 256...

I got into the Adobe's User Forum and I was amazed at the quantity of errors and crashes people are getting with Photoshop 6.0. I think that it is a very, very demanding program that if you have the minimum hardware requirements or a little more, you are into a world of suck. My computer seems slugish with Photoshop open and even when is off still seems slower. At the Forum people complain that these errors never happened with Photoshop 5.5. The problem is that some people with less hardware power sometimes have less problems than people with 800mhz and 512 Megs of RAM. Go figure but I think that the new Photoshop does not like older versions of any kind of software. I would hate to upgrade to a wonderful 1gig or 1.2 gig cpu and find out that it does not help. Andres.

I got this solution from the Adobe Forum.IT IS A PROGRAM BUG!!It applies to gaussian and feather command. Topic Gaussian blur tool in PS6? mark harmon - 01:02pm Nov 7, 2000 Pacific Has anyone seen this... I click on Gaussian blur tool and it works as long as I keep it under 2 pixels. Anything above that it doesn't work and if I click ok with 2+ value, I get a program erorr message. | Bookmark | Subscribe Messages 21 messages. Displaying 10 through 11. Here's what "fixed" the problem for me. Go to the: 'C:Program FilesAdobePhotoshop 6.0Plug-InsAdobe Photoshop Only' folder, -or wherever you have it if different from the default install- and remove the 'Extensions' folder. (Move it to desktop or other location for now). Restart Photoshop... give it a test. (If it's fixed, just store the Extensions folder somewhere out of the way for a rainy day!! ;) ) The files which were removed are: FastCore.8BX MMXCore.8BX MultiProcessor Support.8BX Both the Gaussian blur and the Feather commands now work OK on my system with these plugins removed. NOTE: I have an older mainboard with a P166mHz chip (no MMX, etc.) and evidently there was a conflict between my older hardware and the code in the Extensions plugins. If you have an old chipset and processor, and have this same problem, give this fix a try. Scott: Thx for response, but I didn't get to try out your suggestion. (Was on techline phone before reading the forum updates.) | Bookmark -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ian Lyons - 03:00pm Nov 8, 2000 Pacific (#11 of 21)
