I just received an e-mail from a dis-satisfied downloader. Evidently, this person either just got Bryce from Daz, or Kazaa - who knows, and complained that my glassware models would not import into Bryce. Now, I would have gladly been civil about this and explained politely how to import a model into Bryce - for those who can't read a friggin' manual - except for the fact that this "person" proceeded to ream me a new one for having the gall to waste their time like this... and the next time that I post something to free-stuff that I need to test it out first. Their language and tone really set me off... Has anyone else had a problem with my free-stuff, other than ones that we've discussed here on the forum? I know it's not great modelling... but, hey, that's why it's free. Anyway... I know there's no solution to this problem... this was just my first negative e-mail after a few thousand downloads of my freebies, and I needed to vent. What a bummer.

I know the feeling, you wanna help them out and everything, but in most cases the whole "okay, how do i do that?" gets annoying. i mean it's not nice to take advantage of my good nature like that :D drac (special)

FWTempest posted Tue, 21 September 2004 at 12:20 AM

LOL... I don't believe there's a problem with the files, otherwise they would never have passed... No, the problem was that the glassware is in .obj format rather than .obp. Must've really thrown this joker for a loop... And it just ticked my off how rude he was about it, that I was at fault, rather than saying he had a problem and didn't know how to fix it. @ Drac... exactly. People like this have something (time and effort, mostly) handed to them for free, and instead of a 'thank you', they're griping because they don't know how to use it. On the other hand... after looking at the README that I included with the files, I suppose I could've given step-by-step instructions on how to import the models into a variety of 3D programs, instead of assuming that the downloader would know how to use their own software - or at least know where to look for help if they didn't.

Also.. by way of a suggestion... There is no free-stuff category (that I found) for just meshes... all are segregated by software. If I offer up an .obj format model, it would be nice to have a plain mesh type category to post it in, rather than throwing it in the, say, Bryce category.. where it would be missed by people for Poser imports, or Vue, or any other program for that matter. Sure you could post the object several times, one for each software that could import it, but that would definitely be a hassle.

Kemal posted Tue, 21 September 2004 at 12:32 AM

Ok, problem is very simple, but apparently some ppl have issue with it (???): fancybottle.obj is when loaded is asking for fancybottle.Mtl and if canceled, B5 is reporting BadMedia error ??? If you go to proper folder (unzipped) and click OK works fine, I mean how much time that person needs to explode this to these proportions just becouse this tiny obj format error ??? :) Everything else loaded fine, BTW (talking about you latest free stuff file, of course) Q: which software did you model your botlles in ??? :)

All of my stuff is modelled in Carrara. I got Bryce, Carrara, Painter and Poser (and Canoma, too, but who uses that?) for nothing when Metacreations collapsed a few years back (my brother used to do their web-site and picked 'em up cheap), so that's the interface I got used to and now I can't seem to do anything without that big 'ol camera trackball... ;)

FWTempest, I get emails like that from people who download from my site, the lastest was a person who seemed to think I 'owed' them new free stuff every week, and when the hell was I gonna upload new free stuff, and why wasn't there 'more' freestuff on my site, geez the whole dang site is free whata ya want, blood?

Some people are extremely ungratefull for the stuff we upload for free, and they have no bones telling you either, I usually send them a politely sickening sweet email telling them to stuff it, that 'freestuff' is a courtesy and not mandatory.... BTW, this guy was in my mailbox almost everyday demanding stuff, some people....

I think there's probably a lot of nutters out there!! Also very young kids who just don't understand that 'freestuff' has been made with a lot of labour and expertise, and that you don't HAVE to give it away. And they bitterly resent it if they have to pay for music or programs.....everything should be free, and fall into their laps. AND should have a 'Make Art' button!

FWTempest, you must take that nonsense but with a grain of sand and not let it bother you since youve been more than generous to put it up for free to begin with. Some people just know how to get your goat. Someone else, say like me for instance, would have fired back a blistering reply telling them to kiss my @ss and to stay the F--- away from my stuff if they didnt have the half of the brains necessary to put it to usestupid people shouldnt play with sharp objects, they may take out an eye.

Exactly Pog!! This peculiar form of idiocy is symptomatic of the times we live in, where common decency and civility are at an all-time short supply. I remember when Zhann had the riot-act read to her by one little pinhead who couldn't replicate the results of a terrain-heightmap tutorial that she wrote out of the kindness of her heart. I followed the tut as a favor and it was well-written and dead-simple to follow. But of course it was "Zhann's fault" because this person couldn't follow simple written instructions, so this person gave her a ton of grief over it. I have on numerous occasions answered questions on how to do something in Bryce and ofttimes spent a lot of valuable time rendering pics to help illustrate the steps, only to find that the person didn't have the manners to at least say thanks or give acknowledgement in any way. I keep a list of these dweebs and they are the last people on Earth that I would help or speak to, except to say RTFM!

I for one am a free stuff downloader, and I'd like to to express my sincerest gratitude to all you frees stuff makers. I have had some problems with using some free stuff, but I generally chalk that up to my own ignorance and NOT on any problem with the downloaded file. Especially, when you look and notice that item X has had 1,234 downloads. I'm learning more and more everyday about the various file formats, and being on a Mac in a sea of PC users, I have learned great patience. I thank you all once again, and would gladly shine your shoes, do your dishes or anything else you deem me worthy of if you continue making free stuff and writing tutorials. Bless you all... Humbly yours, Curtis :-|

Your glassware worked fine for me. I've had a similar problem. 1500 downloads with not a peep and then one "person" gets an error when using open and then moans for paragraphs about how I should include instructions. I had another time when I commented on 3 pictures by a person, but not the 4th and they sent me a snotty email asking why. I wrote back saying comments are a gift, not a right. With a community this large, you are going to get the odd idiot. Don't sweat it. You just can't please all of the people all of the time.

First post ever!

Treat them like spam (make sure they're in your spam filters). I work at a public service point (I'm a reference librarian at a university) and can tell you that any time you interface with the public "for free" in ANY context, you are guaranteed to get a nutcase now and then. It's probabilistic. In fact, the MORE popular your free stuff is, the MORE likely this will happen.

Take it as a badge of honor (then TOTALLY ignore the twit).

I never really had anyone complain much about my freebies. (Except one said it was a bit high on polys, but then again that person didn't use Bryce and probably didn't need the extra smoothing.) I sometime have a complaint with .obps since I'm still plugging away with 4.1. Bryce 5 stuff just doesn't work in 4. There should be a separate category to differentiate for compatability's sake, since some people are to lazy to mention the version in their notes. (Or even put a note on an item.)

FWTempest, you have good reason to vent. I'm new to using Bryce, i have downloaded a few free models and never had a problem importing them unless of cause i tried the wrong file format. I just downloaded your Hi-Res Glassware 1 and as you can see by the image i had no problem importing it into Bryce or rendering it. All the smuck had to do was export the files into a folder of his own naming, go to file/import object then look for the folder where he extracted the files to. :)

Attached Link: http://www.lostin3d.com/images/Poser/CylonCompare.jpg

Only problems I've had with downloading Freebies has also been with Poser. People doing odd things like attaching neccesary hip geometry to the Genitals and saving the CR2's with the Genitals turned off before distributing their fine characters like a certain Cylon figure I fought with for 3 hours this past week only to have someone politely tell me to turn his prick on. I could see the geometry if I imported the obj file but for the life of me couldn't figure out why the CR2 wasn't showing it since it was calling for the right OBJ file. Let's just say, turning on a Cylon never entered my mind.

Quest posted Tue, 21 September 2004 at 2:40 PM

LOLwell FWTempest, sorry you had to resort to that tactic but as is obviously apparent in his reply, diplomacy, at least in this case, doesnt work. Reprimanding and ticking off the donor of a free item for not conforming to the recipients dubious standards is a disrespectful, ludicrously crass tact. This person should not be at all surprised to get back the same kind of tactfulness that they like to dish out. As SteveJax writes, you dont go around blaming the generous contributor of a free item, as the saying goes, you dont look a gift horse in the mouth. One would think that if you are having a problem with a free item you would first assess your process and after trying all possible means at your disposal to get it to work to no avail, then you would write a courteous request to the author explaining the steps you took, the machine and OS youre using and politely ask for possible remedies. FWTempest, please, for the rest of us, keep marching on and thank you for your wonderful contributions to this community.

bandolin posted Tue, 21 September 2004 at 3:28 PM

I've always wanted to know what "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" means. So I just looked it up. It goes back to 18C, when determining the age of a horse was done by looking at its teeth. Over time a horse's gums recede and the teeth look longer. Hence the expression "Long in the the tooth" meaning age. At any rate, if someone gave you a free horse, it would be insulting to look into the mouth of the horse to see if were old. After, its a free horse. What difference does it make if its old. We should modernize this expression to something like "Don't look at the guage". If a relative gave you a free car, don't complain that the tank is empty.

Just my 2p-worth (-2p, 'cos it's free) :-)) I've not yet put anything up for the free-stuff, mainly 'cos I've never created anything that I felt was good enough. I have, however downloaded lots. Some of the stuff I've downloaded I've looked at, decided it was rubbish, deleted it and ignored it. They were a very small minority. Some of it is still stitting on my HD, waiting to see if it can be used. Some of it I still can't get to load properly (usually Poser and due to reversed normals - I know how to fix that but don't have the patience to do so yet). Most of it I use in varying quantities. And I'm extremely grateful to all those contributors who have spent all that time and effort and then released their creations for free. (Alas, I have too many freebies to be able to provide "thank-you" notes to everyone who provided the, but I ALWAYS try to give credit, on the rare occasions I post anything, that includes contributions.) I have (on a single occasion) e-mailed a content-provider specifying a problem and asking what I should do about it. The provider responded very quickly with an answer. Being polite always gets better results than flying off the handle:-) OT: the modern equivalent of "Don't look a gift-horse in the mouth" might be "Don't measure the thickness of the gas-pedal cover on a free car"? Cheers, Diolma

FWTempest, i'm sorry but you can't gold plate your glasses in 24K gold as the gold would be to soft and it would show up teeth marks if one happens to bite the rim of a glass. If any jeweller tells you they can plate anything in 24K they are talking bull, they can only plate things in 9-18K and even then 18K gold plating would be rare for a jeweller to do. Oh also you can't just go putting gold plating on glass without first plating them in silver so the gold can have something to take a hold on. gee talk about getting technical on something ;)

LostinSpaceman posted Tue, 21 September 2004 at 11:40 PM

*the site doesn't require a paid membership
*the site doesn't isn't age restrictive
*also, we'll take notice if there are spy-ware installers, one too many pop-ups, etc.

And, of course;
*we have to make sure the item isn't a copyright violation, and is ripping off someone elses work (which, with Poser items, can take the longest)

And;
sometimes we WILL load up that item, if we feel we need to, to check copyright, or some staff will take it upon themselves to make sure it basically works.

Thx AS - you answered my question. For installers, I religiously quit them and ignore the site thereafter. If that fails, I (sigh) unplug my connection, (sigh) quit explorer, (sigh) re-connect, (sigh) navigate back to just before I was before the multitudes started happening (if I can remember by then) and carry on. Or I go make cup of tea and try something totally different..:-)) Cheers, Diolma
