Any body notice they dropped the d in the title, it is now Vue 5 Esprit instead of d'Esprit? Don't know what it means anyway... But I can't wait to explore the new procedural terrains. I hope it can produce something similar to MojoWorld or Artmatic Voyager, without the long render time of MW, as this in my opinion, makes it not as much fun to use. I mean who wants to wait for 36 hours for one render... So here are some cool features that haven't been talked about a lot: -G5 Optimizations, can't wait to test this and see if there are any speed boosts. -Skin terrains (Anybody comment on what this is?) -Pressure Sensitive tablet support for terrain editing -Mesh welding to take multiple objects and weld them together (sounds cool) -Automatic detection and creation of new browser collections (Cool) -User definable startup scene (Ala MojoWorld, nice touch!) -Spherical panoramic rendering with adjustable vertical and horizontal rotation angles. (Nice, now only if cubic where there) -Each camera possesses a target object for easier aiming and setting of focus point (Helpful) -Automatic software updating Thoughts? Paul

Oops... A couple of typos slipped into the feature list: - Vue 5 Esprit starts with a default, empty scene. You cannot define the startup scene (this is a Vue Pro feature), but you can change the startup atmosphere. - you cannot create spherical panoramic renders (this is also a Vue Pro feature). You can however create horizontal panoramas. The page has now been updated. Please accept our apologies for the confusion.

Ok, Well even if we scratch those two features, it's still a worthy upgrade, IMHO. Those are not deal breakers. ;-) Thanks for the updates... Glad I could help debug your feature list ;-) Paul

I think it's just a typo.
Vue d'Esprit not very easy to translate in English... but something like this = In the mind's eye.

I am not going to hide it, Radiosity has a good price tag in terms of time, but e-on made it easy to set the level of quality depending on your scene. It take also some time to learn how to really use it well. I will try again some of my scenes and see if I can accelerate render time. I can't talk about times right now because I was mostly experimenting.

Dotpainter123: The ocean is just a basic water material that is part of a heavily mixed texture (14 pairings deep), the terrain has a procedural function applied to it to make the ravine in the terrain constantly flat no matter what happens in the editor, the texture is mapped using influence of environment settings heavily influenced by both altitude and slope, so that if you add say a hill in the middle of the water, the texture will automatically adjust the water around the new feature. This terrain and texture will be included with Vue 5. I'm trying to track down the render tests I did and I will post them here when I find them.

I did a test of a 3d model built in autocad and exported out to .3ds and imported into vue. I left all the materials as basic colors, left the atmosphere as a standard atmosphere and did some test renders for the various lighting qualities.
Standard lighting - 0hrs 1min 11sec
Global Ambiance - 0hrs 1min 17sec
Global Illumination - 0hrs 18min 9sec
Radiosity (no indirect lighting or indirect reflections) - 0hrs 55min 19sec
Radiosity (both indirect lighting and reflections) - 1hr 10min 01sec
A couple of things that will help overall, don't use radiosity with mixed water materials, this causes severe time lags due to the renderer having to bounce two rays off of each of the mixed materials. Also, for outdoor scenes unless you really really have to, don't bother with Radiosity, Global Illumination is usually sufficient for those. The final tip, most of us are used to dialing up the ambient lighting influence to 100% for the sun, in order for GI and Radiosity to be most effective, the slider should be closer to 30-40% ambient influence.

Oh, and to dlk30341: Thanks, I'm working on a whole plethora of different variations to the crab so expect to see a bit of him in the future from me. On the puffy clouds, still no puffy's, but the regular clouds look much better than in version 4 and I have yet to really experiment with using metablobs for puffy clouds (which sounds like a good answer for them).

dotpainter123: I think I misunderstood you, if you're talking about the procedural terrain, see the first message, but if you're talking about the sunset image most of the image was actually created in Vue 4 and was imported into Vue 5 to see how it handles previous release scenes, the ocean swells are a terrain with a mixed water material.

thanks nanotyrannus your tests where extremley helpfull. That's pretty much what I thought the timings would be like.. but also curious when you did your tests ..what quality did you set the GI slider at? where those test you made 100% quality..? thanks.

I'm really impressed by these fine image examples. Even when it's clear that the artists have only just scratched the surface. In regards to GI, Radiosity and HDRI render times, I think you have to expect some 'jump' in render times.(As opposed to what you might be used to) Sure, everybody loves to be able to render an image very quickly, but if you want to take advantage of HDRI, radios.., & GI, expect to wait on rendering for a little while longer. With any 3d package, you just can't escape some long render times. What I'm saying, is I wouldn't expect Vue 5 to work miracles when it comes to rendering times, just as I wouldn't expect the same in other 3d packages either. When you produce such work like this yourself, you'll understand more about the unavoidable longer render times. Anyway,(I'm ranting a bit) the results you'll produce are definately worth it.

Can Vue 5 pro handle more objects (polys)? I feel Vue 4 Pro gets shaky when I'm in area of 900,000 even if I have some of them grouped/hidden. Or is it just me? :o/
Anyhow, the want factor for Vue 5 pro has gone from 2 to 10 seeing these images! :o)

To work well in real time with any 3D application (not only Vue), get as much RAM as you can afford, and the best OpenGL graphic board you can afford.

Oh my. This =is= going to be fun.... The lava lamp was just about right, and scale was the major issue on the metablob splash. But even with that, the -effect- was fantastic. =NOW= I can't wait for Vue5Pro, so I get my wind dynamics back! WAAAAAAAAAAAH! .......................... Y'know....I might be able to use this as a legitimate reason to start upping the horsepower on the rendergarden again... Hm. -Has- anyone tried the distributed render abilities yet, btw?

alamanos: Render settings were at the new "Final" quality, which is improved from the Vue 4's quality, closer to Vue 4 Pro's broadcast quality. GI and Radiosity settings were left at normal (no quality boost or reduction).

I ordered both Vue 5 and Mover 5 from the website today and am stuck on the last page of the order where it says I must click on the download link for Mover 5 before continuing and the link takes me to a forbidden page. Has anyone else had this happen? I sure hope they ship the Mover 5 CD with Vue 5 complete Bundle since I ordered both and can't seem to download the CD from the link they gave me! It's not like the extra CD will affect the $16 shipping and handling price!

First off Global Ambiance. E-on have hardly mentioned this lighting model, and it doesn't look too great in this test, but for outdoor scenes it gives a huge quality boost over the standard (Vue 4) render, with hardly any time overhead. A real boon to the animators here.
While radiosity does carry, as Agiel said, 'a good price tag in terms of time', I guess that most of us have, like me, been faking it with numerous lights (which also add to render times) and then spending a heap of time doing test renders, tweaking colour, intensity and position over and over... now you just check the radiosity button, and all that work is done for you! Sure the final render is going to take a while, but compared to the whole process of setting up umpteen lights?
All the new lighting models have quality sliders that allow you to degrade, as well as improve, your render quality versus time. An almost infinite set of choices.
If the release version proves stable on a majority of user's machines, I think e-on have a real killer app here.
