Hi guys, I'm desperate so I have to ask for you help if you can spare the time to click on the link below and just let me know if it does or does not work for you! You don't even have to wait for the page to load..just let me know if it works or not for you and what browser you use. http://www.renapd.com My server has moved lately, ever since seems that the majority has no problems accessing my site while a few get a message this page can't be found! This affects even the zip or image links I'm posting to friends or my store previews - therefore I MUST figure out what's causing the problem. Is it a setting? A specific browser? Whatever... So if you can spare a couple of minutes to help me - you have no idea how much it would be appreciated! Thank in advance for any feedback and I just hope it helps to solve this mystery I've never encountered before.. :( Rena PS: My server provider has also been notified by phone earlier and is looking into this problem too right now - but since all works fine from Greece it's hard to pinpoint the problem any other way than this mini survey! :(

Works fine in Mozilla Firefox. ISP is Verizon, located in North America. Is it a simple 404 error that users are getting, or is it a connection refused or what? Could have to do with an improper firewall setting on the user's end. ;)

It's working for me too (but I'm based in Greece, patrida, so that doesn't count I guess). When did you make the server switch? I think that it takes approx. 48-72 hrs for all DNS servers to be updated, so it could be that the users having problems are 'looking' for your site at the wrong server (previous host). If that is the problem, it will be solved by itself, as soon as DNS servers are updated. Jon

softriver posted Thu, 07 October 2004 at 5:23 AM

If you need a relay or a redirect, I can set up a separate sub-domain temporarily until you get things fixed up. I can set up temporary shell access on our servers here at Studio Verite', or I can use one of our undeveloped domains. Let me know with an IM if this will help and we can discuss what would need to be done. Bandwidth and storage are no issue, and I can set up security to prevent you from accessing our company shells. ;)

Thanks for your response guys.. :) JONFE..the DNS change has been done and the server move was completed more than 15 days ago so this is definately not the issue. SOFTRIVER..I thought of that too, especially as Windows XP service pak 2 recommends a Firewall set. I have mine disabled but I enabled it to check out the issue and still I could see the images and access the site fine..so that possibility was eliminated as well. Thank you soo much for your graceful offer to help me out but it's not a bandwidth or space issue that I'm focused on right now - this problem NEEDS to be solved - the site is not free and I pay a respective amount of money per year so I can have zips and images uploaded that I need to share..if it doesn't work then it's a waste of money, so one way or another I must reach the root of the problem! :( Thank you all so much for sharing your free time to help me out - eventually we'll reach someone who shares the problem with laetia and linwhite and maybe his own settings will enlighten me as to what goes on! Those that can't get through to Rena's page, please be so kind as to mention your type of Internet service (cable/DSL/dialup) and provider (local ISP/AOL/Earthlink). It's probably as important as browser. Some dialup services offer "accelerated" access which works by the dialup company actually locally caching the most popular web sites on their own servers and delivering you the cache (like a dumbed down version of akamai). Buuut, go somewhere less popular and it has to retrieve it the regular way. I'm not a net god, but this sounds fishy.

Rena, at any given time there are hundreds of name servers on the net that are misconfigured in any of a dozen ways. Probably the people who can't reach your site are dependent on one of those servers, either directly or upstream from them, so the new DNS information isn't being passed on. It can be extremely difficult to find the problem, and even more difficult to get it resolved. The good news is that eventually these things tend to sort themselves out. The bad news is that it can take a long time for that to happen. (Just as an example, our server had the most bizarre routing you can imagine for most of a year, with packets coming from Melbourne to Sydney to California, several hand-offs in the United States, through Europe and Asia, and back to the other coast of Australia before finally arriving right back in Melbourne. Every packet went entirely around the world! And all because someone's BGP router wasn't set up properly...). bonni

I think Aureeanna makes the most sense here! Is this true? If that's the case, then it is a DNS update to servers indeed. I was informed by the server staff to change mine on register com and I did as I should. I'll call them back and ask for an IP address in case that would help - sounds like a good idea too. try back in a few days when your server will have their DNS info updated It may not be "their" server. It may be some server upstream from them. The fact that many people from different areas of the world are having problems would seem to indicate that (and this, btw, is part of why it's so hard to troubleshoot DNS issues). bonni
