One could, in theory, adapt DAZ's "Gobbles" and load it into Poser 5's "Hair room". Just a thought, probably not a good one. Sincerely, Bill

Actually I just saw a little girl in the gallery from Toshio's Rosie Cheeks Lina who might look good completely covered in fur, but still her eyes would need to be even bigger than they are now.

I'm an enormous fan of Michael Whelan's work, and have his books, which have some really incredible detail int he pictures of the fuzzies (although you have to go back to his first book, out of print, to get the best fuzzies pics). I've been giving it a shot for some time -- it's the hair that's the killer. Got a body that's rigged, but I haven't tried softriver's hair tute yet to see if it will help my hair suit making. For the best look, the Gobbles don't have the right build -- they aren't stocky enough. I've done seven iterations of the main body, mostly based off the sketches, but I sorta suck at eyes, so I'm having to practice with them more. The three fingered hand was a blessing. btw -- I've never actually read the books. They are one of the few glaring absences in my library.

Heh. When I saw the thread title, I thought "Couldn't be H. Beam Piper, could it?" Glad to see it was! Fuzzies can't be driven insane, but I have a feeling anyone trying to rig all that hair would be! (For some reason we had Fuzzies as a character option in our old D&D games. I guess we all liked the books. This lead to some great moments, such as when a nasty interrogater leaned over to my (human) character and hissed "So, where is your fuzzy little friend?" We were also electronics buffs, and we figured an EEPROM (electrically-erasable programable read-only memory) was the sound made by a Fuzzie with a mace...."EEeeeee...PROM!")

Wow! I have never known of anyone besides me to have read Piper's books. I love them and read them every once in awhile. I am sorry that I am not much help in creating them, but if you do, please make it publicly available. Thanks! Jay

Fuzzies would be a great poser character.Wish I could help. H. Beam Piper was one the best little known SF writers ever. Can't think of a single book of his that was not a great read. Icould never pull off the hair, But for a character with the right eyes for a base I would go to Faerie Dream and check out Thornes Pookling Characters. They have large dark eyes like a fuzzie. Good luck on your Quest. Bruce

Read the story years ago in some sci-fi collection or other but never saw a picture of a "fuzzy" until now. Did this inspire George Lucas when he came up with Ewoks, d'ya think?
pakled posted Tue, 12 October 2004 at 11:32 AM
there's at least 3 books on them that I know of..I have almost everything of H Beam Piper I can find (died years ago..) I'm sure Lucas was 'never' inspired by them, I mean, next thing, you'll say that Coruscant was based on Asimov's Trantor, wookie comes from a stagehands effort not to cuss, and that the millenium falcon was designed after a dinner..;

You mean it wasn't??!!! :: just kidding:: I dunno, a short, teddy-bear like sentient creature with a sharp pointy spear ... sure sounds like an Ewok to me. Certainly close enough to be mistaken for one, or at least a kissin' cousin. ;-)
nomuse posted Tue, 12 October 2004 at 12:37 PM
The commentary was made that the Ewoks may have been brushed by Anderson/Dickson's "Hoka" (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/0671577743/103-0780090-7368622?%5Fencoding=UTF8) The Hoka, however, are vastly more interesting. A look through some of the early scripts for the first Star Wars trilogy leads on to believe that the inhabitants of Endor's forest moon started as Wookies and shrunk due to the pressures of budget and the potentials of toy marketting. There is, by the way, a short film entitled "George Lucas in Love" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000053VC0/103-0780090-7368622?v=glance) which makes the hilarious argument that George was merely reacting to his college environment (George to his Yoda-like faculty advisor; "Could you try, just, talking FORWARD?"

ynsaen posted Tue, 12 October 2004 at 5:46 PM
rather interesting the hokas came up -- The same artist (Michael Whelan) who did yon picture above also created what the Hoka writers said was the definitive design. Lucas said in some print interview once that indeed, the ewoks were supposed to have been wookies originally. Midgets were cheaper. Assuming I survive this month, I will definitely turn my attention fully to the task of a Little Fuzzy.

Uh, won't that get you in trouble? I know Desilu/Paramount's legal department crapped a great big bucket of bricks over David Gerrold's original draft of the "Trouble With Tribbles" because he called his critters "fuzzies". Even though it was clear there was no resemblance or possibility of confusion with H.B.P.'s furries, they made him change it just in case.
pakled posted Tue, 12 October 2004 at 6:31 PM
Paramount is paranoid about anything to do with Star Trek; they've tried hounding a lot of good sites of the Web..just as long as they keep making more of 'em..;)

As a bit of shameless plugging... I put a strong dash of Hoka into the Ewok/Munkins in a strange little cross-over fan fiction I worked on for a while... (There's a bunch of odd little in-jokes in there; even a reference to Giles Habibula of the Legion of Space.) http://www.fanfiction.net/s/386124/1/

One thing about Piper's critters; it was other writers who suggested they might be descended from survivors of a starship crash, because of their dependence on a vary rare trace element. So it isn't quite canon to equip them with starships, but I always thought it was a plausible scenario. Piper's own sequel followed a different thread, but the stories are compatible. OK, that's the Fuzzies in Space. So, what about the naked Fuzzy in a temple?
Byrdie posted Wed, 13 October 2004 at 8:54 AM
"...naked Fuzzy in a temple." Tell me I didn't just see that.::looks again:: I just saw that. I'm gonna pass out now. After all, I must be seriously ill, hallucinating even.
That would be totally depraved, even for a weirdo like me ;-) Funny, but depraved.

It was William Tuning, author of Fuzzy Bones, who took the space-traveling-Fuzzy theory and ran with it.
Lucas said in some print interview once that indeed, the ewoks were supposed to have been wookies originally.
Which does make some sense, as Wookie slave labour was used to construct the first Death Star. It certainly would have made the battle to capture the shield generator less uncertain. But as the films progressed, the inherent incongruity became apparent even to Lucas. Wookies are technologically-advanced beings, capable of piloting starships, wielding energy weapons, and repairing the delicate workings of overly-prissy protocol droids. Their civilization isn't likely to be stone-age.
So we ended up with a new race of primitive, fuzzy tree-dwellers on a forest world, just because Lucas didn't want to abandon the fanciful element of "cavemen vs. astronauts".

In additional side note to the tangential "Lucas' Ewok's originally scripted to be Wookiees" trivia--- I think no one has yet mentioned that the name "Ewok" came from generally spelling "Wookiee" backwards -- an inside joke at lucasfilm. -- Your totally useless trivia supplement for the day. --

Well, it hardly matters now. I refer you to the Endor Moon Climatic Catastrophe pages (something about a massive radioactive moon-sized battle station falling on the place).
