I love bryce, but it just get's a little annoying when one wants to model some things. What program should I use that a slow bryce user could learn to model in? :)

The one lots of folks like around here is Wings 3D. Its free and its the only one I've been able to figure out how to use. You can download it from the Wings 3D forum by clicking on the banner (link to website).

Wings3d (www.wings3d.com) is a great starting point - it's free, has an intuitive interface, and is very easy to learn. And I just got my hands on a freebie version of Cinema4d CE 6, and it's really nice to use.

Ok, thanx. I got wings3d,3dmax6,cinema4d and some more. I guess I will give wings3d a try:)

They're all good,..............Max is probably the most versatile, but has a very steep learning curve. The edit mesh modifier is great though, once you get the hang of it. For simplicity and ease of use Wings is probably your best bet.

If you don't want to spend money, then Wings is great.. If you have cash to spend, Rhino is the way to go.. None of it is easy, it all takes reading the manuals and working through tutorials and practice.. It all depends on what you are out to accompolish, and your budget... It ranges from free to the unaffordable....

if you have a lot of money. One that's gotten some interest lately around here is Silo, which is about $110..but for free modelers, start with Wings
Wings Users local 509..;)

Try wings3d, for box modeling is one of the best, not only among free ones, among comercial ones too.

Pure Heresy! BUT, SILO is the way to go - simply because I don't like 'W'......(and a few other reasons);-)

ROFL@ Bryster! Very subtle political statement there Bryster! I could say things about his cohort too, but I don't like to blare my politics in public.

LOL What the hell are you talking about, Danamo? I'm a Brit and I don't give a toss about American politics......;-)

i heard modeling in clay is easy and fun, can be messy though :) :^P Hey, Folypro is right - Metasequioia is a lovely modeller, and free. It has great metaballs in the pro version. You can export as obj etc. from the Pro version, but it's not possible to register it outside of Japan. But.....if you download both Pro and free versions, you can work around that, and export as dxf which imports into Bryce. The metaballs are great - lotsa different shapes, can be converted to mesh, and then have the polys reduced.

...and if we're talking about clay, Pog knows ALL about that, don't you, Pog?

:^P @ TheBryser Above is a screenshot of Metasequioa, in case anyone's interested. You can see the different blob (metaball) shapes. Right click to move the camera around.

only problem I've had with Metasequoia, is the last time I checked the web site, it's only available in Japan. Previously, you could get it at Ann's Art Gallery, and I have a downloaded copy somewhere..;) Hey, whatever floats your boat..I've gone through Corel Dream, Doga L1, Strata 3d, Amapi 4.15, Anim8tor (another free goodie..here's the URL), Bryce (but you can't export your primitives), and finally to Wings..which explains the strange modeling style I have..;)

And if you prefer the old-fashioned "3 orthographic + 1 3D-perspective view", (although each can be selected individually), there's always Invis AC3D. The interface is reasonable, it has most of the low-end functions available, and there are some plug-ins available. It's not free, but it's shareware (my version cost me around $20-ish) Like all 3D modellers, it takes a bit of time to get used to, but after playing with it for JUST 1 YEAR, I've managed to create an almost perfect simalcrum of Drac's "TEH BOX"!! (Slightly more seriously, I use it to create dynamic clothing for P5. I'm not very good at it yet, but I'm improving.. I also use it to create props Bryce, if I can't do it fairly simply using booleans.) Cheers, Diolma

pakled - I just followed the link that you give for Metasequioa, and it's available there. What you do is........ download both versions (freeware and shareware) and save in different folders do your modelling in the shareware version, and save in the native format open the file in the free version, and Save As dxf Import into Bryce and Bob's your uncle

Here's the tutorial that first got me interested in Meta - just have a look at the steps, and you'll see how easy-to-use the metaballs are in it! And you can polygonize, and use magnets on the mesh as well. One, two, three or four views
