Is there any way to get the Poser 5 cloth room to make something "Shrink to fit", a la spandex? Or do I just have to start with the figure and prop at about 90% of their eventual size, and have the figure scale up during the simulation?

No shrink to fit option so the scale figure routine is the way to go.

Durnit, I was expecting that, but was hoping otherwise. You know, something like "Stretch Damping" set to a negative number or something... Oh, well. Thanks!

Why, yes... Yes I do! However, I don't like futzing around with any of Max's dynamics toolkit... it just fuzzes my brain...
