Very cool, and rather beautiful!

As nice as this is. Why not make models that aren't part of some movie or some such? Can't use this in a publication since it resembles something already done. It's a little frustrating. Not to belittle your generosity though!! Just injecting some thoughts. Jeff

I just recently bought the Black Hole DVD. So with the movie fresh in mind, I'm looking forward to playing with this.
JeffAlberts posted Thu, 28 October 2004 at 1:41 PM
I can understand that. I primarily buy meshes for making artwork for RPG books. So unless they're licensed books for the specific genre, then things like this, and all the Star Wars models and such, really aren't useful. There's a real lack of good sci-fi models out there that aren't directly representative of some movie model. Makes it hard to do original material.

Daz has the F.V.C.S which can be configured into many different space crafts and there is Megallen and the shuttles at IW43D.com and there are also meshes at planit3d.com Antares in free stuff as well as AFA starship and props which could be used for a ship interior but building a spaceship from scratch is probably something most modellers won't do for free
You might as well PAY attention, because you can't afford FREE speech

I have the FVCS, it's a new thing, and not bad. But the ships it makes are all small, and not necessarily far future kinds of things. Don't get me wrong, not denegrating John's free stuff, or anyone else's for that matter. Actually many of the free stuff ships are for non-commercial use, so they're out anyway. I'm also not asking for anything for free. I'm willing to pay, that's for sure. Anyway, this is getting off topic. I really shouldn't have brought it up, and I apologize for raining on John's parade. I have his helicopter meshes and they are truly works of art. Please carry on!! Jeff

I've a feeling, Jeff, that there almost needs to be a different set of designs for each setting you work with. Possibly, from what I've seen, severak different styles because of several hudely different cultures. It doesn't sound as if there's an easy answer.
JeffAlberts posted Thu, 28 October 2004 at 5:24 PM
Yes and no. For the setting I'm writing there certainly needs to be a common look and feel for military ships. But just as there are countless different types and styles of cars on the road, so there would be in spacecraft. I don't expect to be able to illustrate all the different types. but being able to show a decent variety is key, in my opinion.

if you want a quick and dirty way to model spaceships, try here.. and Drac and I have tutorials in the tutorial section on how to make some spaceships..and yes, mines' from a TV show..;) IF you want an even quicker way, do a search on Doga L1..predone spaceship parts you assemble and export as .dxf's..;) I've noticed that doing ships that people are familiar with tend to get clicked on more than those that aren't..well, at least with my level of talent..;)I wish I'd said that.. If you look in the marketplace forum, there are two posts for space ships that are original, one by John and one by me, the dropships and the Shred fighter. I am working on some other things as well, like a large surface of a spaceship, the sort of thing you could make a Death Star trench scene with, but it will be original and not from the movie. If anyone has anything particular they need for a sci-fi setting, like a gun turret on a spaceship (coming soon), then just ask and I will see what I can do.

Helgard, I don't even see your name in the merchant list, so maybe I'm missing your meaning.
Helgard posted Sat, 30 October 2004 at 6:07 PM
Mmmm, seeing as it is my first model, my name won't be on the merchant list. And seeing as the model isn't approved yet, you won't find it in the market place yet, but here are links to the threads: http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=1982883 http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=1983277

lol, I was supposed to know that how?
Helgard posted Sat, 30 October 2004 at 9:32 PM
By wearing an aluminium foil pyramid hat and concentrating very hard on my name, then the knowledge will be transferred by a psychokinetic osmotic process. Or you could just ask like you did, and then I would paste the links. Or you could pay me a lot of money and I will send you the book: "Secrets of Intelligence Gathering and Knowledge Resources of the CIA"

That famous one-page book with just a table of contents...
Helgard posted Sat, 30 October 2004 at 10:33 PM
Nope, it's a two page book. It has an appendix explaining the terms used in the table of contents. But seriously, back to the subject, what sort of sci-fi stuff do you people want. Space ships, or interior scenes, or weapons and add-ons, or clothes. I want to make sci-fi stuff, but at the moment I am just making what I need for my own stuff, not paying attention to what other people might want, and if they want what I want as well, that may push the making of that thing up in the queue. I have over sixty models in various stages, from just research and drawings up to finished and texturing, but I want to know what I should be concentrating on.
