what happened to the face dails for nonposer characters in Poser 5? How are you supposed to do facail expressions now?

You still get face dials for non standard poser figures, dark whispers sara has dials and sixus1
s doc sixus1 have dials. Are you sure you have the head selected when you are looking for the dials?

It may be that the parameters pallet is hidden, P5 has a bad habit of doing that. select the head, then from the menu bar click; 'Window' > Parameter Dials. Or use the keyboard shortcut Shift+Ctrl+N.

If you're talking about v3 or m3, you need to have the proper morph packs installed and then you need to inject those morphs before the dials will appear.

I was talking about V3 actually. I have a picture I was doing and need to give her a mournful face. The head is selected but all it does is tilt and turn. No smile, frown, etc. Which "morph packs" do I need to load and by inject, does that mean I have to by that injection morph thing in the daz market place?

V3's expression poses are supposed to come with the base character. Look in your Pose library for "!V3 Expressions INJ." Then inject the ones you need.
NOTE: If the head is selected when you inject, the dials still won't appear. You have to de-select the head then re-select it and they'll be there.
