This does not prevent an other company to take over the development, marketing and distribution of Carrara. I can reveal that such a company exist and that I am closely related to this company. The "lawyer discussions" mentioned previously are now closed and a deal has been signed. To answer to the question about the Carrare rendering engine: this engine is entirely new. It is up to 11 times faster than the Ray Dream 5 one and ranks among the fastest on the market.
