this is killing me, more than 3 days to get this right and nothing happens. Plz if anyone of you can help i really apreciate. This is a sword i created in MAX6

NimProdAction posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 10:25 AM

i import it in poser 5 and this is what i get. plzzzzz hellllpppppp.

randym77 posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 10:47 AM

It looks okay to me. What's wrong with the Poser version?

randym77 posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 10:49 AM

P.S. If something looks "oversmooth," have you tried unchecking polygon smoothing?

RawArt posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 10:50 AM

I cant see the problem either, but it could be that you might want to split some vertices in uv mapper to keep poser from smoothing it out too much.

NimProdAction posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 10:55 AM

i've tryed al that, uncheking and split vertices.... so what you guys saying is that the blade looks right? the blade looks rounded to me. is it only me?

randym77 posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 11:18 AM

Maybe if you posted an image from a different angle, we could see what the problem is? Or maybe a wireframe?

odeathoflife posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 11:41 AM

select ONLY the blade in max and go to the mesh tools ( not poly cause it's not in there) then hit the explode button, then name it blade or what ever, then go to the attach list and attach the blade back to gether, then export to poser and the blade will not be rounded like that. If you use UVMapper then it will separate all the verts in the mesh including the skull and that will make it faceted. I hope this helps.

I can see a problem. The very top pic is sharp as a razor, flat. Then in poser, the blade is not, oval. Correct?..That is what I notice. Will be helpfull though to show a pic in a different angle.

diviner posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 11:55 AM

I understand the pain of seeing a prop all worked smooth in Poser but frankly I would take it like it is right now. It is a wicked prop! your modeling rocks. I make weapons as my favorite type of modeling and it can be really irritating when you get those nice crisp edges and then they look rounded in poser. I had a bear of a time getting the weapons in my 'kung fu in a box' weapon set to look right in poser. There are 51 props and redoing them delayed its release to my store over a month. The Max hint from odeathoflife is petty slammin' if I used Max it would have saved me a bunch of work.

steveshanks posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 11:57 AM

I reckon swords are one of the hardest things to do, smoothing wise..What you need to do is selectively split some polys but not others, and create cuts in just the right place, i think maybe with this you need a cut very close to the blade edge then 2 close to center to give it its curve back.......try smoothing it at a different angle in max then doing some cutting and splitting and maybe you can create the same look as you'll end up with in poser, save you swapping apps to check it......Steve

Why not ?? In max, select the left side of the silver blade, detach it as element. Then load it again in poser. How it looks now ? Better ? You can weld some vertices on the blade base ...

NimProdAction posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 2:47 PM

Didn't work either :(

mmogul posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 2:51 PM

Was 'Weld identical vertices' uncheck ?

mmogul posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 3:13 PM

Up : single plane, all vertices welded Down : single plane, left half detached as element. There are identical vetices on middle line, poser cant smooth it

NimProdAction posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 3:18 PM

MMOGUL i think i'm doing something wrong, i've tryied odeathoflife way, didn't work. Your way......dont know how to do it: I select the balde? then make it editable mesh choose element and detach? now this weld part...have now clue, plz help!!

Jon posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 3:48 PM

Attached Link: http://www.uvmapper.com/

You can use uvmapper to do this, just import the .obj, make your selection and go under Tools/Weld or Split vertices. It will make it sharp again. There's a free version of uvmapper as well that you can use.

mmogul posted Fri, 10 December 2004 at 4:57 PM

in max : select the blade. i dont know if the sword is one single mesh or more. But select the mesh that contains the blade, go to poly level and select the polys of the left half of the blade. Remember to select the front AND back polys. With the selection press "Detach" and select the option 'as element' and press ok. Done. If you want smooth any region, select again the mesh, go to vertex level, select the vertices that u want smooth and press 'Weld'. Use this method to make sharp edges, cloth trims,... Feel free to contact me if you need

PoseRay can fix those smoothed edges. You can split the faces by crease and save it as an obj for Poser import.

Check the gallery section of my site for examples of Poser import with PoseRay. Also read the tutorial in the manual.

good luck,

In max select the blade then ->Edit Mesh - Explode thats what I do when I need sharp edges.

Sue88 posted Sat, 11 December 2004 at 8:26 AM

Don't know if that's the problem here, but another thing to watch out for is not to have n-gons (polygons with more than 4 vertices) in your object. They can look strange in Poser.

NimProdAction posted Sat, 11 December 2004 at 6:14 PM

okay here some updates: JON 's way

NimProdAction posted Sat, 11 December 2004 at 6:15 PM

Sys 's way

NimProdAction posted Sat, 11 December 2004 at 6:16 PM

mmogul 's way looks better but still not there yet

NimProdAction posted Sat, 11 December 2004 at 6:17 PM

going to try FLYERX 's way.

mmogul posted Sun, 12 December 2004 at 2:16 PM

looks better, but the cutting edge locks smoothed too. The blade is a two elements mesh now, left side, rigth side. "If you want sharp edges, detach it". So, make the blade a 4 elements mesh : Front left, Back Left, Front Rigth,Back left. Believe me, you have a great mesh. Work on it.

NimProdAction posted Sun, 12 December 2004 at 4:10 PM

FLYERX' S way

The blade i use now to make 4 elements is the blade AFTER detach (Left side) or the blade before doing any detach?

mmogul posted Sun, 12 December 2004 at 4:36 PM

it doesnt matter, but you can use the 2 elements blade, go to poly sublevel, check the 'Ignore backface', click-n-drag to select the front polys and detach it. You will have the 4 elements and a sharp render. It will looks better, even on max renders.

NimProdAction posted Sun, 12 December 2004 at 5:40 PM

I think NOW it looks good. Thank you to all who tryed to help and a special Thnak you to MMOGUL
