Xurge has a really cool Roman Soldier outfit with 3 different textures at Poserpros. It's not free but is worth the money. I've only done one render with it so far which I F****d the lights up on. It's in my gallery though if you want to see the outfit. The title is something like "defeat at Teuteborg". It's a great outfit, complete uniform, sword, shield ,helmets with testures for centurion, Praetorian Guard and a General I think.

Do you have any particular period in mind, or is it the default style familiar to Julius Caesar and the early Empire? There's plenty of pay-for stuff, but the Daz set, for one, looks a little bit Hollywood. (Though the movie "Gladiator" is a respectable reference for the general look of things on campaign.)

AntoniaTiger, it's the default "Julius Ceasar" style... Thx for the reply. Kostas.

Well, I could pick a few holes in your gallery picture... Most obvious, you need to tweak how you show metals. In the environment of the picture, they're going to be reflecting a lot of green. I'd say the Romans in your gallery pic are pretty much what I mean by "too Hollywood". Part of that's the design of the clothing; things like the helmet crests. Partly, they just don't look like people who work in the open air. The skin just doesn't have that weathered quality.

It's LEGIONARY!!! A "Legionnaire" is a member of the French Foreign Legion, who, although they have much in common with the *miles* of ancient Rome, are neither ancient nor Roman.Yes, DAZ has about the best I've seen, but it is rather crude in the corselet, (lorica) which has the wrong number of bands for either early or late versions, and very poor frontal detail. Gladius is pretty good, and the caligae are not bad. The pilum is too light. The helmet is a late version, the scutum an early version, and the front to back crest is just plain wrong for the mid Republic onward (even early Republic it's not quite right.) The lorica segmata, as it is called in modern times (we don't know what the Romans called it) came into use in the late Principatecompletely wrong for the armies of Julius or Augustus Caesar, or anything earlier.
There are numerous good reference sites on the web. Start at RAT (URL above), they have an abundance of reference links.
Greece and Rome at War by Peter Connolly is a very good pictoral reference for the entire period. It may be in print, but it should also be in your local library.

I know my Roman picture isn't the best I've done AntoniaTyger, I referred to it so the original poster (kozv01) could see the type of Roman outfit he may have been after. I think I did actually say that I had screwed up on the lighting if you read my earlier post.
