How can it be done? One other thing besides hair, if I'm going to render in VUE, is particles. Is there a plugin somewhere which can duplicate smoke etc? Is there a possibility of a particle system in V5I?

The best thing I have seen so far is making a primitive object and assigning it one of the fire or smoke textures, then animating the texture on it. That said, it has been (sorta) confirmed that there will be NO particle generator in Vue Infinite, and Vue 5 regular doesn't have on either. However...Vue Infinite supposidly has better support for python scripts, and maybe some clever developer will develop a sort of particle system using python. It would probably have to be a specific python script for Vue though because Vue will not work with Poser's python scripting. For example, Vue will not import particles made with Megaform, a python particle plugin for poser. It sorta works but Vue will only import the first frame of the particles, even though they work fine in poser. Short answer...use an animated texture and don't hold your breath for a native particle system for Vue.

No particle systems in sight i'm afraid. What some of us do is to use other objects (like terrains with special mappings) for effects like that. Or do it in another program and then import the models into Vue. I have done that several times with Cinema 4D and Vue. I as well have used for example trees for splash effects and it didn't looked too bad. I want to continue these experiments and maybe one day i have a collection of effects done this way. Who knows.

There is a nice application called Particle Illusion that can be used for that. Check the link for a couple of examples for use in Vue. The app has been given away for free on some magazines and there is also a cheap version to buy.Message edited on: 01/04/2005 07:50

If you want to add particles into animations you can't import into vue as I did in the previous example. Instead you have to take the animation into Particle Illusion and add the particles there. Check the link for an example of how to add smoke to a moving train.krimpr posted Tue, 04 January 2005 at 4:44 PM
I'm with HellBorn, Richardnovak77. Particle Illusion rocks big time. Awesome effects, realtime rendering, no "trial, render, readjust, rerender", etc. I just got my copy a couple of weeks ago and don't regret it one bit. This solves ever needing to wait for a particle system for any software that you enjoy using. Even my beloved Lightwave can't render them as quickly as PI, and it's a heck of alot easier. Check it out.

I use Particle Illusion too. Great soft. Love it too. I used it for my tests "**Barrage**" and "**Livid**", available at the my www.belino.net 's CLIPS page. Shots composed in After Effects. :o) PhilippeDale B posted Tue, 04 January 2005 at 6:40 PM
Well, I have to admit that I'm more interested in Metaform function in Vue-I for flowing liquids with collision response to the environment. Particle Illusion is probably the best way to go otherwise, as it is post processing. BTW, thanks for jogging my memory, Phoul! I hadn't checked Ebay in awhile, and just now snagged an unregistered copy of After Effects 5.5. Now to start saving pennies for PI. I still want Metaform, though; Vue has =needed= actual dynamic waterfalls for such a long time now...

Phoul, I've been a big fan of your stuff for a while now. I check your site regularly. Great renders. So PI is that good huh? I'll see if I can make a go of it... And also, water dynamics for rivers and waterfalls would be a fantastic addition to Vue.

That's the one thing I'm disappointed in after hearing of Vue Infinite. Particle technology would have put this software over the top, above and beyond most features in any other landscape software. No one else has it, except for WorldBuilder. Also, if you do particles in post, it helps to have the ability to render in passes with extensive G-Buffer output ability, to aid in "deep" compositing. Let's hope they put in some of that as well.

That is why once Infinite is out the door, we all need to lovingly twist WierdJuice Software's arm on the issue. The metablob primitives are there natively; I would think the issues would be a bit less complex in implementation that it was in Poser (at least in regards to -creating- the meta particles. Collision might be more difficult; as it would require terrain, vegetation, and mesh access to permit setting them as emitters and colliders). The more voices with $ behind them, the more likely it is to occur. This assumes that E-on doesn't have a surprise in the offing. As you said, a particle system would put Vue over the top...and it would also make a nice plug-in, wouldn't it? And considering the number of people asking... As for the G Buffer... What I remember that feature list that was accidentally hot for a few hours saying was full support of G buffer compositing information, and the G Buffer info being available in layers. That good enough?

"What I remember that feature list that was accidentally hot for a few hours saying was full support of G buffer compositing information, and the G Buffer info being available in layers. That good enough?" That would certainly be exciting! Hopefully, what they mean by that is we will have the ability to render our scene in "passes", like we can do in the high end apps, which allows you to render a seperate shadow pass, for instance. This way, when you composite all the elements in a video editor, you can make color and FX adjustments to shadows, specularity, reflections, refractions, etc. independant from the other elements in the scene with more efficiency, providing ultimate control over the final appearance. So yeah, that would definitley be good. ;-)

vue can't animate textures? What are you talking about? You all sound like a bunch of people making excuses as to why vue is no good? You all seem so fake. Why is that?

"vue can't animate textures? What are you talking about?" What are YOU talking about? We're having a discussion on the benefits of particle technology (and some things about g-buffer output) that may be possible with the release of Vue Infinite. "You all seem so fake. Why is that?" Again, what the hell are you on about? What's "fake" about discussing professional techniques and features in 3D? Let me guess... you're about 14yo and spent your Xmas money from gramma on Vue Pro?

:) renderus: v5i will as far as we know support video textures, nothings been publicly stated yet tho, except for a list that published by mistake. daleb and maxxx: i share your excitement about the g buffer composition/layer render improvements, as for weird juice im 100% with you on that daleb, then again, until e.on comes public we realy dont know what the deal is about v5i.

Maxxx; (flips to page 4 of the goody list and muses) I'm not going to spoil E-on's party on this...so I'll just say that there are 5 seperate entries on the subject of multi layer rendering, and leave it at that. But you missed a few options, there..... >:) But ohhh, are you gonna grin when you =see= that list... Let's just say that I'm already scoping out a socket 939 mobo to upgrade to, so that when the dual core Athlon 64's hit, I'll be ready to up the system specs. And add another box to my garden (I'm seriously starting to look at one of the cheapy rackmount frames; it would clean up the installation a lot...)
