I just activated my free website and I don't know where to go from there. ;-) Could someone tell me what s/w I need to set up my free stuff. Html is greek to me! I have GoLive 4 if that helps, but I haven't used it. Is there some way I can do this without knowing html? Is there some type of plugin or converter to use Quark or Pagemaker? HELP, please. I have about 6 textures to put up at the moment, some for Michael. Aeriol

Technically you don't need to do any HTML at all just to put up some free stuff. You just need a program capable of uploading the files to your server. Once there, you can use the filename and path as your link. ex: http://www.mysite.com/freestuff/texture.jpg You can then go to Renderosity's free stuff upload and use that link there. Beyond that, I would suggest taking the time to learn GoLive. It's not too hard to learn the basics. Dreamweaver is another good one. These programs write the HTML for you.

@home has an app called File Manager that says I can upload files with it to my site. So, that done, how do I set up a page of thumbs with links for my downloads, do you know? Thanks for your help.

My suggestion is to take a few days off and really immerse yourself in the manual of GoLive (You might want to upgrade to 5.0 also). It is a great program, and the manual is not to bad as manuals go. You can also set up GoLive to be your site uploader. Or you may want to get a free program like "Fetch" or "Anarchie" to do your file transfers to the web. Creating a downloadable file is quite easy as dcourt touched upon. Just create a file folder on your site (any name will do, but keep it something that makes sense, like "poserfiles"). Upload your files to this folder and they now are accessable to the community. The link should now be something like : http://www.mynewsite.com/poserfiles/texturemap.jpg Remember that the internet likes certian files like jpeg, gif, zip and sit. avoid files like Pict, Bmp, etc. If you want to create a page that shows the available files, you can just create a page with the appropriate links (again read the manual). Hope this helps. James

Thanks James, I guess there's no way around it. I'll have to read the manual after all.

It isn't that hard to make a simple website in HTML. If GoLive seems too complicated, go to your library and get "Creating Web Pages for Dummies." That's how I learned. The included CD has some programs that could help you get started, too. A really easy one (though it seems to be abandoned now) is HTML Pro.

Inkwolf, thanks for the info. Can't get to the library right now due to being snowed in. But I'll keep it in mind.

In addition to reading the manual, I'd suggest finding websites you really admmire but which aren't too complex. Then, using your browser menu (on Netscape it's under "View"), select "Page Source" to look at the HTML code that the site is built on to see how the author of the site did his/her thing. Nothing wrong in ripping off a few lines of good code!

michalki, uh.......I never would have thought of that in a million years! ;-) Isn't that copyrighted??

Well, I wouldn't go copying a big company's expensive website design. It would probably be too complicated to use, anyway. But just for simple pages, I'm sure nobody would resent your taking their code and replacing the pictures and text with your own. HTML is really very basic, as long as you don't get into tables, frames, etc. Basic HTML just sets your page layout, like where to have paragraphs, where to put the pictures and links, whether to center something....it's just text formatting commands. There shouldn't be much trouble in "borrowing" a framework. Also, looking at someone else's HTML and comparing it with the finished page is a help in learning how to use it yourself. You're welcome to use any of my pages, if you want! :PPilotHigh posted Sat, 30 December 2000 at 11:41 AM
Thanks, I'll take a look at yours.

One thing I should have made clearer & which is what Inkwolf mentions above: it's definitely unethical, immoral & in some cases illegal to use images, original logos & so on that appear on a page with the HTML. What I was referring to was obviously only the HTML itself. After just a small amount of time, HTML has been used & borrowed so much on the Internet that there is very little that can be combined in new, original ways. Image theft (versus someone borrowing an HTML setup) annoys me: recently someone (one of my competitors in fact!!!) used a whole bunch of the images I use to sell my products without even bothering to ask my permission. I asked that he stop doing so & he apologized. Because of the huge amount of time involved scanning & color balancing the images, the images that appear with my HTML are a valuable resource & I guard them as much as possible. HTML on the other hand is like bricks used to build a skyscraper: the architect's design is what really matters because the bricks are usually all the same. Do a search with Google or another good engine under "HTML Code" & you'll come up with a bunch of terrific & free sites that show you how to create great looking sites. Nice thing about such sites is the best of them not only explain different HTML schemes but you can look at the actual results right there on the page, which adds a valuable dimension to what you find in a book.

Michalki, sorry for not answering sooner; just got zapped with a terrible cold. I only got up to check my mail. Don't worry I won't take anything from your site ;-) I just got GoLive 5 and I'll read it when I feel better. Thanks for all your help, though.

Geez, I can't even see straight. Sorry Michalki, I meant the website crack for Inkwolf, not you. .....I think I'd better go back to bed!!
