I just clicked a link to a current news item on google, to be met with this message. Needless to say, I haven't done any of the things they describe, and don't have an add-on that caches pages. I've e-mailed them and my ISP to see if I can track down what's causing the problem. I can't access any of the slashdot.org site. This happen to anyone else ever? Or......maybe the slashdot site has been attacked and everyone is getting the message? Either your network or ip address has been banned from Slashdot ...due to script flooding that originated from your network or ip address -- or this IP might have been used to post comments designed to break web browser rendering. Or you crawled us with a rude robot, especially one that doesn't understand RFCs very well. If you feel that this is unwarranted, feel free to include your IP address (194.46.8.9) in the subject of an email, and we will examine why there is a ban. If you fail to include the IP address (again, in the subject!), then your message will be deleted and ignored. I mean come on, we're good, we're not psychic. If you think your IP number is different from 194.46.8.9, tell us both. If you are using a browser with some kind of add-on that crawls or caches pages for you, tell us what it is. Since you can't read the FAQ because you're banned, here's the relevant portion: Why is my IP banned? Perhaps you are running some sort of program that loaded thousands of Slashdot Pages. We have limited resources here and are fairly protective of them. We need to make sure that everyone shares. If your IP loads thousands of pages in a day, you will likely be banned. Please note that many proxy servers load large quantities of pages, but we can usually distinguish between proxy servers being used by humans, and IPs running software that is hammering our servers. Your IP might have been used to perform some sort of denial of service attack against Slashdot. These range from simple programs that just load a lot of pages, to programs that attempt to coordinate an avalanche of posts in the forums (often through misconfigured "Open Relay" proxy servers). You might be using a proxy server that is also being used by another person who did something from the above list. You should have your proxy server administrator contact us. Your IP might have been used to post comments designed to break web browser rendering.

Not unusual to have someone who also uses your server or IP to screw things up for the other users. I'd contact your IP and see what's going on, and then contact these guys to clear it up. OR, it's just a hoax and someone has hijacked or re-directed your browser, and is doing this to get back at google for some slight by making anyone using it frustrated and annoyed, or I could be full of pookey and not have a clue.....that's happened too!

Nah, it appears that someone from pog's ISP used their line for some dubious stuff. Pog, you're absolutely correct in mailing that mail to your ISP.

Maybe they've been over cautious and banned the whole IP range. Which is pretty nasty. Are you on dial-up? Dynamic IP?

Or some virus program dummied your IP to hide and mailbombed the server.

pogmahone this is from Slashdot's FAQ page as well, thought it might be of help to you. How do I get an IP Unbanned? Email banned@slashdot.org. Make sure to include the IP in question, UID, timeframes, and any other pertinent information. If you are connecting through a proxy server, you might need to have your proxy server's admin contact us instead of you. Answered by: CmdrTaco Last Modified: 3/26/02

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

I got baned on AOL for bulk e-mailing until I rang them up and complained, telling them I didn't know 700 people....!

I once got my whole company blocked from emailing one of the top London investment banks. They weren't happy with us trying to head hunt their entire staff. But it wasn't my fault, my boss made me do it. I left 3 years ago and as far as I know, they're stilled banned. It was stupid idea (which I told him), even the cleaning staff got emails asking if they were interested in a position in corporate finance.

I got banned from a 3d forum once. We banned a whole ip today on the game site where i'm an Admin on...4 people using that ip opened quite a few multi accounts which we don't tolerate :)

There's a poker site I play on and they are always banning groups of people for running on a local network and linking to the game server and then telling each other what cards they have and beating the other players hands down.

Piffle. I heard that the whole of Croatia was banned in 1991 or so, because someone went seriously sniffing around some sensitive .mil computers. Beat that! :-)
