I read that in a thread. I'm still shaking my head about that one. I guess if you use dialup, you can't learn very well, so stated. All this time I was learning to hack and slash my way through poser, was just a waist of time or I'm one of the rare few. As the un-named person stated, the majority on Hispeed learn more/faster because of their internet connection. My, my, and I thought it was intelligence, ability and the thirst of knowledge. Well, now I know why most are better at this than me. I'm a dialup user. ROFLMAO. This is a playful dig to all that think this way.

This runs counter to the basic rule of life, art and writing: Constraint compels creativity. In fact, I've noticed a direct application of the rule to this subject. When I encounter a website filled with uncropped and unsized 3-megabyte BMP files, which could be displayed equally well as 20-kilobyte JPGs, I know without even looking that the site is in an .EDU domain. Academic folks have had "Hispeed" internet forever, and they tend to communicate mainly with other "Hispeed" users. So they never have to learn the benefits of organization and compactness in a website.

I see. And where do the tutorial writers, innovators, and artists of accomplishment among us but happen to be on dialup get their skills, knowledge, motivation, and gain their knowledge? From a secret cabal of even higher-ups who are on cable, DSL, or the really, really super-smart masters with T3 connections? Nope. From themselves, their work, their diligence, their explorations, trials and errors, and for some, their innate talents and capabilities. Were the best artists in pre-internet days the ones with the access to the best teachers and the best art materials? Not necessarily, not that any of those elements hurt, but I'll tell ya, when I was at art school, there were students like me who had to balance classtime and immense loads of homework with working for a living, then there were the offspring of wealthy parents who did not work, could buy hundreds of dollars worth of supplies each week like it was nothing, and who had all the free time in the world, or so it seemed. Were they the better artists or the more diligent students? Oh no, baby, uh-uh. Generally speaking, hard work and a diligent effort to overcome obsticles seemed to be the winning personal factor. I had a color theory teacher at that school who said something that made us laugh, but over the years her wise words have come to mean a lot to me: "All it takes to make great art is a twig and some ink." DSL is great for big downloads though, yeah. :-)

Sounds like the result of data-mining gone amok. They take the results of all those check-boxes ticked on websites that ask about income, education, internet connection, etc. They come up with some kind of "correlation" that best is a very indirect measure and make a "conclusion" that is entirely dubious, but it amuses the ignorant.

I'm using cable, can't say that it has made me smarter or anything. I do know one thing... I'd feel pretty stupid if I gave it up to go back to AOL.

Dialup users are lucky. In my day, we wrote our messages and search queries on paper, and mailed them off to the internet. It would take days or even weeks to get a reply! And sites with heavy graphics? Forget it, it could take months just to refresh the page! (Boy were those painters kept busy!) Man, were we stupid! But think how stupid all those people were before the Internet existed at all! Wow!

I think I have a 14.4 modem around here somewhere... and that was blazingly fast for the time. I remember how to make ink using candle soot, so if civilization falls, I'll still be making art. However, this DSL line helps me to share it with more people. :) And I have to agree with bonni that a high speed connection doesn't always improve one's ability to sling words around correctly. Well, in *my* day, we were a little more advanced. We used glorified mechanical calculators that weighed several tons, and we called them computers.

The first device that I worked on was known as the Difference Engine. It was invented by somebody named Charles Babbage. I think that he invented PC games, too.

Anyone familiar with the history of computers should have heard of the Difference Engine.

And what do you think that it was like, connecting to the internet with this device? Talk about slow-w-w-w-w-w. And on top of that, programming was a nightmare.

But the biggest pain of all was running Poser on the thing. Poser kept crashing all of the time, and Victoria always came out looking like she'd been through the wringer.

Man, I always hated that.

And just imagine what it was like when you got your powdered wig caught in the thing. It wasn't pretty, let me tell you.

I attempted to render a Bryce scene on my home Difference Engine once upon a time......I think that the render is still on-going. But good things come to he who waits: the render should be completed in another century or two.

In fact, that's one of the things that initially convinced me to switch to Vue.

I am thinking about upgrading again, but I am not certain if any of my old software will run on a newer machine. We'll see. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

What a dsl and a cable bring is SSSOOOO much information that many eople just download and download but just cannot find the time to use, try out, read or watch what they have downloaded. Provided there's no virus inside of course. Because there is always more. And more. and more. A larger HDD does not have more "little grey cells". Like porf. Well if it actually was the case then that person must be on a 9600 dialup because that's about the stupidest thing I've ever heard. LOL

I'd say it's more likely the OS that defines the intelligence of the person, people who use simple interfaces like Windows XP are less intelligent than people who have stuck with windows 3.11 & DOS. I use Windows XP myself & have noticed a sharp drop in my skills when dealing with problems regarding the software.

gad..my first PC (Leading Edge Model D, 8086, 512k memory, 5.25 floppy, and a 20 meg hard drive), that was the 2nd upgrade I did on it (after adding 128k in chips, chips mind you), to a blazingly-fast 1200 baud modem, because there was no way I was going to use one of those 300-baud units. I once was asked to look at a 75-baud modem, with an acoustic coupler (I looked at it, and told 'em I couldn't fix it..;)
Does this mean I have to scrub all my BBS numbers, forget my AT codes, and the silly utilities that showed 'the modem' lights on my screen?..;)
@Xenophon- I actually tried to Model the Difference Engine, once..ran out of memory before I could get a reasonable amount of gearing done..;) It may still be in my gallery, but it's greatly simplified..;)

I can't believe this has gotten this far. Here's exactly what I wrote: "Just a FYI, the download only includes the Grrl mapped version, and instructions on how to easily make a V3 mapped version. Why? Simple. The download gets pretty big for dialup users, and most of the high speed users already have the mad skillz to do the conversion. (It's only two minor changes in text editor.) " I made the post, and the reason I made it, is because some dialup customers I have encountered of late are very new to poser, and haven't had as much exposure to poser knowledge as some of the higher speed poser community. That is an honest statement, and anyone who takes offense to it can just lump it. If you want to "read into" it that I was specifically targetting you to offend you, That's really your issue, not mine. And I even replied that there are exceptions to every rule, but I remember my dialup days, and there are many webpages that loaded mega slow, and many 3d objects and tutorials I had to pass on that I could have learned from, because the download would have taken me so long. I never said "All dialup users are stupid jerks, who can't figure anything out for themselves." And I never alluded to trying to slam dialup users at all. This is another great case of someone offering a freebie, and trying to think of people not fortunate enough to have high speed connections, and just getting dumped on for any old reason. Maybe I should have said, "When offering a freebie to people, and trying to be considerate of dial-up users, some are trolls, who will go out of their way to try to create a problem." Sorry if I'm not "politically correct" enough for some people, but they will just have to learn to get over themselves.

FYI. I have never trolled on anyone and I didn't troll you or your generous freeie. Yeah, but it was a "playful dig" in the original thread, AND also a "playful dig" in a dedicated thread here as well? Just so you know, I didn't want to take much time in posting that thread over at Daz, because I had to do a total xp reinstall, and lost ALL of my poser downloads, both free, and the ones I've bought. Some were backed up, some were not, and ALL my programs and utilites need to be reinstalled. On top of that, this was caused by a hardware failure in my onboard sound, and at one point, it took my almost 1/2 a day just to get my system to boot up again, and I thought I might have lost all my work in progress as well. Little by little, I'm getting things reinstalled, and working again, but will have to buy a new sound card, just to bypass the hardware failure of the mainboard sound. (I really don't want to screw around installing a new mainboard. I didn't realize that I had totally lost a 60 gig partition until yesterday, and I'm supposed to not be tinkering with this and working at all, because tomorrow's my B-day, and we are supposedly celebrating it today and tonight. (So far the weather and the day have been totally against us.) We can't celebrate tomorrow, because my wife has a 12 hour work day, so I'll be spending my B-day here alone, supposedly not working on poser or my computer stuff. Needless to say, I'm a bit thin skinned right now, and have far more on my plate to be concerned about then debating someone in a thread when no offence was intended to anyone at all, and I was trying to quickly offer something useful to people I feel strongly indebted to, for supporting my creative efforts.

I started on a steam-powerd computer, with wooden gear wheels. Way before the Babbage guy came around. When we wanted to overclock to get a really fast answer it we used to hang a wrench on the safety valve (ask Mark Twain about that!)... Seriously, though, I did talk to a guy that explained why so many sites that sell stuff use Flash and other things that make it almost impossable to view them on dialup- he said they don't want dial-up customers, anybody that so cheap that they wouldn't buy broadband wouldn't spend any money, anyway. That's what he said, no, I don't agree with it, and yes, I know some people can't get broadband. ;-)

I've heard that as well, but the fact of the matter, is broadband just isn't available everywhere. I'm in the mountians of NC, and I had to fight tooth and nail to get broadband cable, even though I can almost hit the telephone pole with a rock! (and I almot wanted to!) After 4 months of haggling, and being told that cable just wasn't available in our area, they finally sent a supervisor out to look at the actual situation. After a week of deliberating, they decided a co-pay would be required.. we had no idea how bad that would be, and then the finally called back, and said it was 43. I said $4300??? Isn't that a little excessive for only a 100 feet or so?? Then he told us the copay to run the additional lines was actually $43. $43 for 4 months of grief! Upshot was they felt bad about that going over their records, and decided our 1st 4 months would be free!

that once Ive been on a hi-speed internet connection (which hasent
been long), I HAVE been able to learn more! mainly due to the fact
that, I can send/receive messages and read tutorials quicker, plus
all pages load faster or just simply load-up, where they would not
before. I remember not been bothered to do certain things, mainly
sending messages, because the time it took to perform these tasks,
was pain stakenly stupid! One more thing, I wouldnt have bothered
to post this message if I were on Dial-up, coz it used to take 2-3
or 4 mins just to load! ok, thats just my opinion, ill read the

Y'know.. the more I see him, the more I think I need to own him. I wonder if there'll be a Mrs Darth Tater? And their kids.. the Darth Tater Tots..... Well, I have lightwave 8 up, and now upgraded to the new 8.02, and finally got my tablet working again. The drivers are no longer online anywhere, but I managed to find the rar file that had the drivers and installation stuff. And winrar's back up again as well. The thing that just really irritated the the most about this, is that I'm super careful, and super organized on my system. My wife always marvels at how many little changes I make, and tweaks to get everything running as smooth as possible, with no issues. No one's perfect though, and as they say, Shit happens. I did though get Snow of my B-Day though, so I'm happy about that!

Well, I lived in Florida for 13 years, and totally missed out on all the various seasons (other then hot, and hotter then hell!), so having seasons again is a treat. We only get about 13-15 inches total the whole year, so when it snows, it's a play day here. Now just imagine if you only got 13-15 inches a YEAR! ;)
