Hi, I had hoped to be the first to post our news to the forums. My apologies that was not possible. The following is our recent update for those who have not been able to read other threads: Curious Labs is announcing today that we expect to ship the next version of our flagship product -- Poser 6-- in Spring of 2005. We have some very special promotions coming soon that should excite our most avid users and potential new buyers of Poser. More details will be sent out soon! If you wish to be the first to know, you can sign up to get our Curious Labs News at www.curiouslabs.com. We will send updates first through out direct email news, then post to forums 24 hours later so if you want to be the first to know, sign up. I know many have specific questions. I apologize I can't yet offer more details now. But soon. With kind regards, Katherine

It saids that poser 6 is capable of pretty much the same thing 5 is..But i went to curious labs, all excited to see the product and nothing...i also went to pc connection website and nothing there either... Does anybody knows anything...could this been a mistake of the magazine. The new box of poser has to silos of a man and a woman...and it says pretty clearly POSER 6 HELP!!!!..I'm all confused now ------------------------- this was my post on the forum...i guess...i got some answers...but how come pc connection is already selling the product?

As being one of the 1st to buy poser 5, I am extremely reluctant to jump on the bandwagon when poser 6 comes out. I will have to see if it has significant differences be- tween 5 and and 6 to make it worth it. Corrections to the firefly rendering engine would be worth it. Open GL would be a plus (though it would mean changing my video card). Objects/figures loading faster would be great. Anyway, I will wait and count to 30 (days) and see what materializes in the forum and I definately wont buy the presale. (g) I still have great hopes that they have made signifgicant improvements to it.

...I have complaints about P5 too, but we shouldn't lose sight of the price point of Poser... a hundred fifty bucks or so for a first time user. That's dirt cheap for a 3d app. If P6 is buggy when it first comes out and it's still in that price range, no prob here. They'll patch it. I'll be bummed if CL ever sells to a business man whose plan is to raise the price to five hundred bucks knowing full well he'll lose a bunch of customers, but have fewer complaints to deal with on about the same revenues.

"Which one gives the price, please? (the price you're unwilling to pay)." "I may not have calculated the upgrade price, What," Exactly. You don't know the price for the upgrade (although you do know a price for the full product as quoted in a catalogue which erroneously listed it. So that price is PROBABLY right for that product to that audience). "I never said, "there no room for them to make useability improvements to existing features as well as bug fixes?"" No, you said: "No way I'll pay that price for a bug fix." Without knowing the price or, it now seems, whether there's more than bug fixes in it. I'm trying to understand your position here. I'm a pedant - I can only get the information I'm given and work from that, so everything I say is base don what I read. I remember the first release of Poser 5 - I'm pretty sur eI had one of the first in the country, which means I got stung on the price as well as getting a far too early for release version. I don't think CL need a "well done" pat on the back at this point, and it's a little late to be suggesting features for Poser 6. that time wa probably when they were requesting user feedback on what we'd like to see in Poser 6. However, I don't think it's QUITE the time to string them up based on pricing we don't know for a specification we don't know. Just my two penneth - I can EASILY understand anyone not wanting to upgrade "at any price" based on the Poser 5 release/fix schedule, and I can EASILY understand anyone who loves Poser 5 (like I do now it works) looking hopefully towards "even better" with Poser 6. I just couldn't understand reasoning based on facts that we don't have. Sorry :( Cheers, Cliff

Jerry Springer? Why would anyone need to watch Jerry Springer when they are in the forums here. Jerry Springer has no excitement at all compared to the forums. Fights happen quicker here. Heck, you don't even need to have a reason to beat the hell out of people here. LOL

"Heck, you don't even need to have a reason to beat the hell out of people here." And WHAT EXACTLY do you mean by that????? Heeheee :) Cliff

No worries LawnDartLawnDart - I'd rather a bit of humour amongst real discussion than the more volatile threads that can happen from time to time Cheers, Cliff

Well I just hope they fix the "black spot render" problem that was to have been fixed in p5.. which I am just now finding and trying to learn a work around...

I want Poser 6 now! Now! I don't care if it's actually a late-Beta version. I want it now! I would rather have a buggy version than no version at all. I want to pay a company so I can test their software for them. I want to download a new service pack every day so the software will work as promised. I want to have to post messages in the forums about typos in the manual. And I want to pay a "special" pre-order price for it. I don't want to wait 3 months to see if I can save $150 by buying it from Amazon.com. In other words, let's give CL enough time to fully finish and test Poser 6. And even then, we may want to wait until Service Pack 1 (or 2) until purchasing. --John

Lyne:- is that the black-spot/mottled pattern when using raytraced shadows? I think one of the main fixes is to decrease the minimum shading rate until that goes away, IIRC (which I may not). You could also look at the possibility you've got some self-shading happening and adjust the shadow bias? Cheers, Cliff
operaguy posted Wed, 02 February 2005 at 6:34 PM
lyne, i assume the work-around you are speaking of involves scaling up? And/or turning down min shading rate as who3d suggested? ::::: Opera :::::

Who3D, what is self-shading? ::::: Opera :::::
who3d posted Wed, 02 February 2005 at 7:21 PM
self-shading is a problem common to ray-tracing engines where the math, due to minor imperfections, results in an item shading itself incorrectly. Imagine a floor that has "cast shadow" turned on. Now imagine that the shadow it casts falls on itself... Most render engines that I know of have a "bias" setting of some sort that allow you to add or subtract a variable amount to the "at surface" to start casting the shadow at. So the shadow falls BELOW the object by x amount not actauuly ON the object. Cheers, Cliff

No it is not self shading... and I found the work around to work perfectly! It is when one sided mesh is used, I believe. It is only on plants with flat single surfaces so to speak.. and it is NOT just the fire fly, or ray trace... I used the plain old poser 4 render, and then fire fly without ray trace, etc.. before I found the work around... it is simply the way that P5 READS and APPLIES the textures... there is a fault in there.. The work around is: 1- Plug the texture into an Alternate Diffuse Node 2- Unplug the texture from default Node 3- set default diffuse Node to a value of 0 and thought it sounds strange, and I am not a programmer, this fix works perfectly - to allow the maps to show up properly no matter what the lighting or render mode is! :) I am a happy camper now. I just hope that P6 (a year later maybe! ;) will allow me to save time and not have to "fix" all the map settings for the plants I use.

Yes ... some weirdness with P5's default diffuse shader has been noted before. I often use the alternate channel myself, especially with transmapped items/materials.

I had to wait a long time and for when I went back into education before buying P5 because of the high price of Poser in the UK. I do hope they will give it to us on a par with the pricing in the US, but as was seen with the release of Shade the special deals being done in the US were not reflected in their European sales. Lyne you could write a python script to swap the nodes over, or if Ockham isn't busy he might be persuaded to give it a go.

I have no idea how to write a python script.. never went there! :) But it's not so hard to unplug, change the numbers and plug in... I also have found with trying to use a Python script in P5 (one to get rid of all the lights at once so you can start over) - that the added python will not stay ON THE BUTTON LIST...and may or may not work! I found my P5 locking up on this particular thing, so gave up on pythons. Sorry.

Maybe the light script was written for ppp? I've had problems with some scripts like that, but the ones written specifically for Poser5 haven't caused me any major worries. Hogwarden's python library program comes in very handy for pinning scripts to the button list so they stay where you put them.
