Wow guys! I'll take one of everything...=) You can never have enough weaponry, I always say.... Well B, I've always been into SciFi, but never did much artwork in it.... and I've been watching SciFi's super Friday, StarGate, StarGate Atlantis, ST:Enterprise, and the new improved Battlestar Galactica lately which is inspiring. I have sketchbooks filled with the stuff but just never did any images. Well, now I'm going to try to put the sketchs to work....

Okay, Im using 3D Studio Max 5.1. I was undecided as to using NURBS or polygonal geometry at first. For non-organic objects I usually tend to go with polygonal geometry and surface tools (splines) which is what I went with here. I also see a possibility of being able to model this using Bryce but it would take much longer. The image of the unfinished, partial model above illustrates about an hour and a half worth of work this morning before going off to my appointments. I saved Zhanns sketch to disk and brought it into 3D Max to use as a template background.

As much as I like Bryce obps, I also use Vue...and 3ds or objs are the prefered format....I was looking at them, you all had a different take on the little details, that's really cool...=)

Yes, I love the square! I have one in my toolbox, also the French curve (the French did a few things rightLOL). Love your sense of imagination. To pick up on it and go with it, love it! I often think that we lose our childhood imaginations as we grow older. I remember being a wee lad and most anything in my hand could have been a spaceship! I often find myself trying to visualize objects as if theyre immense and Im just tiny. Then the shapes take on different perspectives. I just love it! Hummmmmartistic imagination 101. LOLExcellent stuff Zhann, youre an inspiration!

jocko500, Personally I have no objection to that, not that my model is up to much - I was just mucking about. The real problem is I don't know how to export it from Bryce4. (gg) Silly I know, I've just never had occasion to do that before. (shrug) Fran

you'll find the instructions you need for exporting within the manual, look under 'file menu' export object, hope this helps

I've discovered how to save it - but only as a .obp - ie an Object Preset. Not as the manual SAID it would be - a dxf object, unfortunately. This is very limiting, I was wondering if Bryce5 is any better at this? Fran

Fran, no version of Bryce currently supports primitve and metaball exports of any kind, don't feel like you have an inferior version. No trees, no boolean models. Texture export is limited to renders of flat planes, etc., except in the case of terrains... You can export terrains, or previously imported mesh models, or stones. The terrain exporter is actually quite powerful, although obnoxiously slow, but I use Bryce to create all my terrains in Maya scenes...
FranOnTheEdge posted Wed, 09 February 2005 at 5:25 PM
Lordstormdragon, Oh, that's a bu^^er! I wonder if Bryce5.5 will let us export? If not, what else should I buy? - that's easy to learn and DOES let you export similar stuff (and lets you use Wings with it)? (Plus not too costly - I hope!) It would be nice if Bryce 5.5 let you import the colours and textures from stuff created elsewhere... (sigh) Fran

As long as you don't add any Bryce primitives, metaballs, etc to an imported model you can export it from Bryce but without textures. Select the model and click the little e for edit mode (smoothing). For PC's hold ctrl-d and click the check mark, this will bring up the save window.
FranOnTheEdge posted Thu, 10 February 2005 at 1:48 PM
But in that case, what is the point of importing it into Bryce in the first place? If you can't then export it with all your pretty touch-ups added? I certainly hope B5.5 is an improvement over this current state of affairs, when it finally arrives, that is. Fran
