... and how to avoid it ? It often happens when shooting people on stage with a plain background. I stand at about five meters from my "target" and I use a flash. My lens seems clean. It's easy to remove with Photoshop bur I'd like to know... Thank, Sam

ha ha....when I first started with a Digital....I got these "flying saucers"....which....I actually believed to be UFO's...however...they still remain...."unexplained" to Me :]

A stage has always a particular lightning. Perhaps a part of the explanation ??? And it never happens with an analogic camera ???

Check your lens or filter (if u use one) for dust or smears ! This is most likely the culprit and just needs a bit of cleaning! Look at it in bright light as this kinda stuff is more noticeable.

sometimes that are (defocussed) dust particles - highlighted by the flash - may also happen with a film camera

i was showing my husband this. he was speculating like you...wondering if it could be some kind of light source on or around the stage. wish i could help.... :(

What is is intriguing is the stage and the plain background. With a decorated background, it never happens...

Could it be flare from other lights around the stage ?

Maybe sunlights ??? Lime lights ??? for nearly each time, characters are on stage ... A kind of reflection ?

Illuminated dust particles caused by the flash. Some focal ranges are more sensitive then others. The closer your flash is to your lens, the easier it shows up, by definition compacts are likelier to show them

So... all I have to do is to tidy up the room before shooting !

Or let the Sensor of the camera get cleaned by someone who knows how to do it. Don't touch it yourself!
