Actually you have bacteria in your intestines to help you digest your food. When you die, the bacteria are part of the decomposition process. That's part of why the body appears swollen and bursts open. Have a nice day :)

Right, the bacteria in a corpse produces CO2 which is why you want to have someone embalmed to slow down the decomposition processing for a viewing. I'm not sure whether being in water aids the bacterial process or not. Our bodies are about 75% water so leaving a corpse long enough in the water causes the tissues to liquify. In cases where forensic scientist need to make an ID the tissues are often too soft. The fingerprint analysis will "deglove" the victim, meaning sliding the skin from the hands from the body. Then the analyst will place their hand inside the skin like a glove and roll the tissue to obtain prints.

Not just CO2, but another delightful gas, Putrescene, which is part of the Butane family. A very noxious and flammable gas produced by rotting meat. I bet Doc Geep never envisaged his thread ending up like this.

PapaBlueMarlin posted Thu, 10 February 2005 at 10:18 PM
Putrescine From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Putrescine (sometimes spelled putrescin or putrescene) is an organic chemical compound NH2(CH2)4NH2 (1,4-diaminobutane or butanediamine) formed by and having the smell of rotting flesh. It is related to cadaverine; both are produced by the breakdown of amino acids in living and dead organisms. Other foul-smelling chemical compounds include methyl mercaptan and butyric acid. Note that putrescine is synthesized by healthy living cells by the action of ornithine decarboxylase. The polyamines, of which putrescine is one of the simplest, appear to be growth factors necessary for cell division.

Didn't Ben Franklin suggest that we "fart proudly"? And he was a cultured gentleman. Another thing to think about: without bacteria and fungi and such organisms breaking complex bodies down into the simplest chemicals, life on this planet would have ceased long, long ago. With no building blocks, there would have been no new life. This planet would be a dead world filled with single-celled pre-cambrian critters: no flying dinosaurs, no cavorting dolphins, no humans to ponder the meaning of death and transfiguration. Carolly

An amorphous blob of methane being struck by a lightning bolt? I'm not sure, but suspect that more than the kite would have been blown sky-high! ;^)
