Subject: Making Millennium Horse Mane(s)

I have the Millennium Horse Bundle ps_bn017 and the Unicorn add-on ps_an080. I am using them in a PC/Poser5.

I don't have much experience, on this subject, and the horse's manes give me several problems. I will only outline one here.

I made a hasty dapple unicorn foal. I thought his stock mane was far too short.

I wanted to know, can I lengthen the mane in the Hair room, or create a new mane?

The foals neck is in about 4 or 5 segments, so I guess I would have to lengthen each section one at a time.

  1. Can this be done?

  2. Is there a better way?

  3. Can I lengthen the short existing mane?

  4. Am I on the right track here, at all?

Thanks - Jim

... same here, it's called bookmarking. We want to watch. Jim, please forgive if this question is too far below your experience...i don't have the model...there is no morph dial for ManeLong or something similar? Do you know how to select a model's parts so the parameter dials 'switch' to the morphs for it? ::::: Opera :::::

Hi jim,

The foal mane is not dynamic hair which is what you have in the hair room. So it is not possible to lengthen it there.

You can use magnets for example. See images.
Hope this helps.

To use magnets:

Select the neck part. Select Object/Create magnet. It will be centered on the neck part.
Select the Mag base. Resize it some 150%. Move it to as you see in the picture.
Select the mag zone. Move it to be centered with the base. Set the Y scale smaller to approx. as it is in the image.
Select the mag. Use the dials to move/rotate it. You can also now select the mag zone again. Use the dials and see how the area affected changes.
Try your way I'm sure you can get the mane you want. :o)

Opera-

Thanks, that was a good and appropriate question. In the future,I will look at all dials before pleading for help.

There is a dial entitled HManeSpread. This dial is the only Mane control. It seems to do something you would never want to do. :-)

Basically, the dial parts the mane down the middle and sends it straight out to each side. I've included a pic of the extreme example.

I could find no way to highlight the mane or lower/raise it's parted position.

After I did this gross dial move, I tried to interest the hair room in it, but no luck.

I guess work the magnet solution as well iluustrated by Tiny. Does not hurt to learn how to use magents, ever! Just for my info...is ther a paramenter dial for the tail? TailLong or something? ::::: Opera :::::

Tiny posted Sat, 12 February 2005 at 4:10 PM

..is ther a paramenter dial for the tail?<< Yes, TailLength. On the foal it'll make it shorter but not longer. On the horse it'll make it longer and shorter.

Here is a quick example of "extra" dynamic hair made in the hair room. It may be easier to do the whole mane in the hair room than messing with the magnets.

Well, Tiny+Opera+LuluLee-

It's been a profitable day. I've learned something about forum protocol.

I've gotten some insight on the practical application of magnets.

I got a sense that making new hair in the hair room is possible and probably practical.

Thank you for the great illustrative examples. This should keep me off the streets for awhile :-)

LOL! With over sized magnets hanging from the mane.....

Sorry, couldn't resist... it is very late/early and one ought to be sleeping already...

tip toes off to a dark corner And Jim, the hair room can be a pain in the neck. So don't hesitate to "call again" and I'll give you some settings to start you off. :o) Don't be out riding to late now you hear!

Hi

Just a follow up to tell you how helpful you were.

Using your responses as a guide, I managed to produce a decent mane on the head of the unicorn.

I'll work my way down his neck after I get through resting on my laurels. :-)

I've attached a .jpg of the new and improved unicorn mane.

Thanks again. I certainly wouldn't have gotten this far this fast without your help

Great work Jim! Way to go! :o)

Great! BUT THE BIG QUESTION: is that magnets or hair room??? ::::: Opera :::::

Tiny posted Sun, 13 February 2005 at 11:18 PM

He has made a forelock and some extra strands in the mane (if I am not misstaken). And it is done in the hair room. :o)

Go take a look at the hairy cat project HERE to get more ideas of what is possible in the hair room. :o)

Hi-

I'm sorry I left out the most important part, the procedure.

It was all done in the hair room.

The hair room procedure, worked straight off. What I did for the front mane, I did in one take. I suppose I was lucky, but I know a good thing or dumb luck when I see it. :-)

A long time ago, Napoleon's staff was trying to convince Napoleon to promote a successful battle hardened officer to general. They told Napoleon how brave the officer was in battles, and how shrewd his startegies were in dealing with the enemy.

Napoleon stopped the wrangling, and said, "What you say may all be true. But is he lucky?"

As for magnets, they look like a good tool to learn about, and I'm going to find a spot to do some experimenting. I knew they existed, but had no idea what to do with them. Your mane lengthening trick gave me a feel for the results of their application.

Thanks - Jim
