Forgive me father for I have sinned. It's been 7 days since my last Bryce render and I've had unholy thoughts about another renderer. I'll attach a picture, father, showing the new focus of my attention. Why should I stay with a program, no matter how loyal, when it takes a week to render something that took 6 minutes in the source of my new affection? Guide me brothers and sisters. I can hardly see the light anymore, please guide me away from darkness.

I know. I too have strayed. Please guide me to the light!

Phil: But how long did it take you to learn how to do all the lighting, texturing, etc. in Yafray BEFORE you did that render? :^)

Quite photorealistic, except it's too dark in shadows. But no artifacts!

s Yafray?
draculaz posted Sun, 13 February 2005 at 5:02 AM
yet another free raytracer. it's a command-line rendering engine that can be used with wings. like you set up lighting, textures and so on in Wings3D and then tell yafray to use all that and render it. Lighting-wise you have pretty much everything as in Bryce. sorta

Catlin: What kind of monster processor have you got in your new system?!

Phil: I think you overdid the roof on the traction engine. Checkout the side edges.

the yafray render looks...erm...bad. The light you seek will come when you look at the renders created in the beloved Bryce, and then look again at the render you have made in the blasphemos Yafray.

Catlin still has a small monitor... :-P Dem. Sour grapes. Really, what processor?

Has anybody tried a HDR render with Yafray? Ya think AS could put it through the wringer?

I must admit that these renders show the promise of Yafray. How would you do an animation short of adopting the mind-twisting app Blender?

Cardinal The Bryster will so proud of me!!! But he may be disappointed that he won't be able to use the Spanish inquisition(which no one ever expects) and he may try to sell you indulgences from the MP. ;-)

mmmmmm....the dark side,so delicious.Welcome aboard to the darkside Drawbridge.I like bryce and all...but getting good results in say 5 minutes compared to 4-24 hours, its nice just because you get more modeling time.

Claymor posted Mon, 14 February 2005 at 9:33 PM
Yeah, but sticking a poser figure behind the wheel of that engine would be a nightmare in texturing. I'll keep Bryce around at least for anything with people in it.

AA is still better in Bryce. Not to mention that you can save presets and all. I can still see where using YAFRAY would be good for doing something quick.

Sorry to be so long in responding but I've been playing with my new toy and seeing how fast it can render things. It was my birthday last Wed. and was given a 64bit Athlon 3.4GHz processor. My brother also gave me a 64bit motherboard at christmas which meant I had half of the system sitting there for over a month without being able to use it. Now I can use it and I'm oh so happy. Also I don't mind if you all feel you must weep. 8P Catlin
drawbridgep posted Tue, 15 February 2005 at 5:38 PM
pauljs75 - Is the AA better in Bryce? I've not played (or even turned on) AA in yafray, so don't really know what it's capable off. I know there's a setting. I'll investigate more I guess. Catlin - That's a nice bit of kit then. I think since you have a nice fast PC, you should share your IP address and let us use it as a lightning render server.
