I just took delivery today on a HP 607 Digital Camera. It has no TWAIN driver for Photoshop, so I am forced to use the manufacturers cheesy software that imports them into a file as JPG's.
Last Christmas I ordered a Sony or Vivitar (can't recall which it was) and it had the same problem, so I sent it back to OverstockDotCom and then ordered this HP for my birthday.
I swear I won't send this one back, I'll just use it for decorating the floor of one of my Aquariums!
The gall of these corporate pencil heads! No control over what your image will look like unless you use their software which was written for one of their prepubescent children!
I contacted the Technogeeks at HP On-Line Store where I bought the camera, the conversation went as follows:

Hello Joe.
Andy
Welcome to HP Total Care for Photo Smart Products. My name is Andy. How may I assist you today?
Joe Keezer
I just received my HP 607 camera today from the HP Store. I spoke with a specialist prior to purchasing who said I could directly transfer images from the camera into Adobe Photoshop 7, but I cannot figure out how.
Andy
Have you installed the camera software in the computer?
Joe Keezer
Yes, pardon me for saying but I don't like cheesy add on software. I need a TWAIN driver for Photoshop
Andy
Joe, let me check that. Please give me few minutes.
Joe Keezer
OK
Joe Keezer
Smoke break!
Andy
Joe, thank you for waiting.
Joe Keezer
BTW: I also have a HP psc 1315v All-In-One Scanner. It has a twain driver for Photoshop
Andy
I would like to inform you that the images would not get transferred directly to the Adobe Photoshop. They would be transferred to the Hp Photo Image gallery.
Andy
Also, there are no Twain drivers available for the camera and the scanning technology is different from camera unloading technology.
Joe Keezer
Problem is, it records the images as JPG. When I directly import into Photoshop I am able to adjust the resolution and my original is a Photoshop document.
Joe Keezer
"It" meaning Image Gallery...
Andy
I understand that Joe. However, you can only save the downloaded images to Adobe Photoshop once they are downloaded in the HP Photo gallery.
Joe Keezer
Thats why I don't use it.
Andy
Joe, but you would not be able to download the images directly to the Adobe Photoshop.
Joe Keezer
So, my new camera is worthless to me?
Andy
I cannot say so Joe as you would be able to take pictures with it and be able to unload the images to the Photo Image gallery. The only thing is that you would not be able to download them to Adobe Photoshop.
Joe Keezer
I'm a forum coordinator at www.renderosity.com/ maybe one of the techno-geeks there has a solution. If they can't help me, the camera will make a great decoration inside one of my Aquariums. Be sure to stop by and see us sometime.
Andy
I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you in this regard Joe.

Joe does this cam use a Memory Stick or Compact Flash card or is the memory "built in"?? if it uses a card, you could grap a cheap card reader and it'll mount just like another drive... i'll look aroung Adobe and see if the "RAW" plugin supports your cam... BRB, :) scott

I am looking at the manual for your HP 607 on line, and on page 52 it talks about image quality, which specifies the amount of compression that your photos will use. For the best picture quality, you would want it set to 4 MP ... however, because your internal memory is only 32 megs, that means you'll only get about 8 "best quality" pictures before you need to download them to your computer. With digital cameras, the image quality is set on the camera itself, before you shoot the picture. So even if you did use a TWAIN driver to import them into Photoshop, it wouldn't make the images "better", because the camera dictates the image quality. The software furnished with your camera transfers the image data from the camera to the computer. So, in that respect, I don't think Photoshop would do anything different than the software you got with your camera. So you should be able to use the camera software to transfer the images to your computer, and then take them into Photoshop.

Um... ...sorry for being late, haven't slept and working my Heine off on an animation.
I found a work around for installing the TWAIN. I could not get the driver to install using the "Have Disk" option under install new hardware in the control panel.
So, I copied the driver to my hard drive and ran it from there. It installed properly and is working great!
Thanx for looking one and all.
