Anyone know of a method for converting .W3D models into a format so I can bring them into Bryce?

pakled posted Sat, 26 February 2005 at 11:44 AM

uh..I remember it's some proprietary format. There's a commercial package, something like Maya, or Rhino, or such, that would do it. There was a thread in the Poser forum about a year ago on it..there was a site called 'great buildings' that had all their stuff in this format..sorry I can't be of more help. You could search in the Poser forum, I suppose.

Try 3D Object Converter. 3d file format converter with over 400 format's. You will probably have to convert it to .obj, then import into Bryce.

Just open the model up in Wings and export as an OBJ or 3DS format. I find OBJ works best.

Thanks I'll try your suggestions and report back :)

Sorry Dann_O, Bryce dosn't import .w3d files.

FranOnTheEdge posted Sat, 26 February 2005 at 6:47 PM

By W3D you mean Wings? Yes? if so, you just need to re-open the thing in Wings and "Export" as a Wavefront.obj file Then Bryce can import that.obj file. As Dann-O said. Fran

pakled, Yeah, I know that, but with my not knowing the person who asked, they might not have... I might have known everybody else would know a lot more than I do... Duh... both feet in my mouth, as usual. Fran :)

s'ok..not to worry. I just thought someone didn't know..not necessarily you..;) I just wish I could remember the original thread, it was on 'great buildings', and one of the commercial render packages could handle it..but it's been so long ago..:|

That's half the trouble, when you get to my great age of 13, the braincells begin to die, and you forget stuff... (g) Like I can't remember where I got about 90% of the stuff I've downloaded from various freebie sites and sections - the stuff I DO remember, includes Drac's Awesome Buildings, and Jed Swindells glorious ships. But they were really special... Fran

Update: I have not found an .W3D to .OBJ converter yet, and I'm starting to lose hope. Wings3D(Ms Version)Can do the following: Import: Nendeo(.NDO), 3D Studio(.3DS), Adobe Illustrator(.AI), Wavefront(.OBJ) export: .NDOP, .3DS, .EPS, .OBJ, .RWX, .WRL, .XML During my hunt I found another converter but the website seems to be under construction but I found a downloadable copy here which expires after 15 days. http://homepage.mac.com/meshbox/.cv/meshbox/Public/meshbox.zip-link.zip

This is the site for "The Great Buildings" There are quite a few free 3D models of buildings there in .3dmf format. I have converted some of them in the distant past and used them in other 3D apps -- can't say as I remember what I used now. There is a program ($$) I believe it's called PolyTrans that converts just about all 3D formats from one type to another.
