Here is an owl I'm working on. I was egged on by Feb. National Geo. cover. Without using a texture map, and some fur for feathers, here is my owl so far. No beak yet, or details in face. I think I'll use feathers for the tail so it can fan out and in. Also, flight feathers... any suggestions?

And here is a foot I made after working on hands for so long : ) The ankle is funny looking but after the legs go on, it should look better. r.

I allways use this link for bird wings reference. Im posting again, just in case someone miss the previous. Good job, ominousplay!

Thanks noviski, I like posting WIPs on this site. If they don't get seen by anyone else, at least all you'all see what I'm up to late at night. My wife takes a look now and then, but mostly I'm my only fan. Here is another WIP on the owl. Next, flight feathers, a beak, better eyes, and bones.

Wow! I have to post again to say Thanks again, those wing photos on the site you posted rock! I've been looking for textures for wings... and fur for some time. I end up scanning photos and making a palette in PhotoShop. Boy, I'm getting to like the UV Editor better in Carrara every time I use it. R.

Youre welcome! The site shows the front and the back of the wings. With the UV Editor you can have better results. Remember my first griffon? I take the wings maps from that site (see the texture). And dont worry, youre not your only fan. I like your work too. Keep going, ominousplay!

Now, the wire. Give me a lot of work, creating and deforming spheres on the vertex modeler. Feather by feather, rotating, stretching, squeezing and aplliyng the boolean union. Maybe the wings could be made in the metaball modeler and converted in another object/modeler.

ominousplay posted Mon, 28 February 2005 at 4:00 PM

I have not tried to apply a boolean union, other than simple excluding parts to create holes. When the wing is finished, is it all joined as one object in the vertex medeler? It looks as if it is. Very nice work. I can see making one feather, rotating, stretching, etc. but how did you use a boolean union? It looks great. I always appreciate seeing the wire frame. I'm starting to turn into a wireframe junkie : ). R.

Youre right, ominousplay. I create three sections of feather before boolean the parts in one piece. Be my guest to download the primary wings from here. Its a .car ziped file. Enjoy it! ;-)

Thank you Noviski. I'm hoping to learn how to join the vertex using boolean. I've never been successful using weld, so I go the long way with links from vertex to vertex. Thanks for your help. R.

On a personal note, I followed you link and came to a tavern or restaurant in Brazil? Are you from Brazil? My Spanish is horrible and I had trouble reading the pages. Just curious. Thanks again. R.

Im here to help you, my friend. Yes. Im from Brazil. And my Spanish is horrible too. We speak Portuguese here. ;-) Its a tavern from an old friend. The "Gruta da On" (or "Jaguars Cavern")is the place where I drink my beer and eat the delicious "feijoada" every saturday. You must taste this, man! I use the site to keep my files. Well, boolean is very easy. First, I create a feather in vertex modeler.

noviski posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 5:07 AM

Now, duplicate it (stretch or rotate as you wish). Doesnt matter the distance between the shapes, the 3D Union Boolean always weld the parts in one.

noviski posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 5:09 AM

Select both the shapes. Then go to Edit> 3D Boolean.

Select the union option. OK...

noviski posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 5:15 AM

And thats it! You create boolean! Now repeat the stepts until you have the first section of the wing. In time: not only my Spanish is horrible, but my English sucks too... ;-)

ominousplay posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 12:44 PM

You've gone above and beyond my simple request. Thank you again. And your English is fine. What is language but a way to share ideas and thoughts. I didn't know Booleans were that easy and useful! I forgot, Portuguese! No wonder I struggled to read the writing. Looks like a great place to spend a Sat. night. R.

Im always glad to help!

Dont worry, the mistake about the brazilian language is very common. In fact Brazil is the only country in Latin America who doesnt speak Spanish... :-)

Gruta da On is a nice place to eat feijoada and other national dishes. The only problem is, its a so heavy dish, the most right thing to do is eat it in the lunch. After that (drinking a lot of caipirinha and beer), the only place you want to go is your bed! Forget the night! :-D

Caipirinha looks good right about now. Noviski, I just got C4pro in the mail. It loaded okay on my eMac as upgrade to C3. I had AnythingGrows installed C3, but now I'm having trouble with even getting it to show up in C4. I think I'll have to call DCG for the serial since I deleted my work emails and lost it, but I think it should have saved somewhere. Can you help with the install? I let C4 load by itself. The C3 files are still there, and I kept the AnythingGrows extensions in the Extensions folder in C3... there was one .dat file that was outside the Extensions and one .dte that was in... I'm thinking the .dat file was the serial preference. Anyway, I'm trying to get it running again. So far, I like the new app. Can't wait to try the IK and morph targets. Thank, R.

I think the "caipirinhas tutorial" on that link the best Ive ever post here. ;-)

Maybe you need to upgrade it. Looks at the DCG website. I see some threads behind, by ewinemiller, where hes post some links to fix Wireframe and Toon Pro. The message its HERE.
