I'm still fighting with the cloth room, trying to get a test to work...
The damn thing's been actively "Draping" for a couple of hours. The draping count (what is that, anyway?) is approaching 93,000. I mean, sure a thing might take a while, but sheesh, that's ridiculous.
Phil C had some suggestions for me last week, but so far nothing's worked.
I ran a simulation, and it happened lickity-split, but didn't actually DO anything. After a couple of seconds, I still had a naked guy with his arms out and a big "plate" around his waist. Woo hoo! So I figured I would try the Draping button and see if the answer was there, but... so far, it's just cal-cu-laa-a-a-ting...
Ideas? Always appreciated...

Did you assign the portion of the cloth that intersects the figure into the constrained group? Can you save and send me the scene so that I may take a look at it first hand. That would probably be the best way to advise you further.

You know, what I ended up doing was increasing the size of the "skirt" so that it doesn't intersect, but I also placed the vertices at the inner opening in the contrained group. Okay, well, you'll have a file from me today. Oh, did I mention: you are really the best. Thanks man.

Really, Phil, I can't thank you enough. It's like I wrote in my email, getting that first insight sometimes comes slow for me. But now this whole thing makes perfect sense. I loaded your fixed prop and watched it drape before my eyes. (...and the cloak of confusion lifted from my eyes) You're a real boon to the community. Thanks again for helping out. h5
