Can XFrog's files be used in Vue?
spedler posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 4:39 PM
Xfrog itself can export to several file formats which can be imported into Vue (e.g. .obj). But I don't think you can use the Xfrog plant CDs directly - as far as I can see they don't do a native Vue format, so you need the Xfrog software as well as the plant files.

Actually you can purchase some of the plant bundles (I know for sure the basic one is available) in the vob format. the downside is that you only get one of each species of tree, so you need the program to do variations on trees of the same species.
spedler posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 5:27 PM
Yes, you're quite right - but it's not very clear from their web site that this is the case. You have to look at each set of plants individually to see whether they are available in vob format (I didn't look at every CD but the ones I did look at all were). That's quite an important selling point, they should make it a little clearer.
It seems that each CD has 20 plants with three size variations of each, but for more variation you would need the Xfrog software.

xfrog does have some free plants that can be imported into vue. http://www.inf.tu-dresden.de/ST2/cg/downloads/publicplants/

All XfrogPlants libraries are available in Vue format now. You just have to specify your format choice or if you buy the dvd, you get all the available formats for the selected library.

"xfrog does have some free plants that can be imported into vue. http://www.inf.tu-dresden.de/ST2/cg/downloads/publicplants/" Unfortunally there's this statement with those plants: The materials may only be used for non-commercial purposes. So much for free :-(

So the libraries are available as dvd's with all different formats? But where, apparently not in the Greenworks shop?
Orio posted Wed, 02 March 2005 at 6:40 AM
Martians, you should ask sales@xfrog.com I don't know about shop/commercial details Orio

When you buy a plant set you can indicate your format of preference (apart from Xfrogs native format), and nowadays the dropdown list does include vob. But I agree, Moonflower, that $149,- is not exactly cheap: and as long as you don't own XFrog, you will get identical specimens every time. On the other hand, these are really great looking plants - much, much better than those that Vue generates!

Hi i try to add some comments. I am the product manager of Xfrog and XfrogPlants. Therefor i spew market speak...sorry.... All 21 Libraries can be ordered as VUE 4 format + XFR format in our online shop at xfrog.com -> shop, there is a format pulldown menu, we supply 9 different formats nowadays. the most recent are VUE, Bryce, Maya, and .scn(XSI) All libraries have 20 species x 3 ages, including the VOB, formats, therefor contain 60 models per CD, sometimes more. 149 / 60, is less than $ 3.00 per model., or $ 7.00 per Species. We also include 60 Rendered Billboards(alpha planes) , and 60 Perspective Renders. these 120 files all have either alpha or object buffer, so u can drag and drop them over backgrounds seamlessly, or map them onto a single polygon, to make a forest. XfrogPlants are in some recent films - Polar Express, the Incredibles, Renegade / Blueberry, and the trailer for the upcoming War of the Worlds. (Spielberg/Cruise) We hope you will try them out in your favorite format. And i hope i was able to answer a few questions. And please dont give up on us. a few other notes- our PDFs are in 6 languages, and include all renders of the models and a history and important, interesting facts about each plant. if you order Xfrog 3.5 Lite, or Full, you get with that order, a Basic Library of 60 Plants. That can be selected in one of Vue, 3ds, Bryce, and Poser, plus the XFRs. So for $ 199 you get a pretty new idea for modeling and a bunch of plants to use and study and edit however you wish. anyhow, i will stop the corpspeak - please give it a 30 day test drive if you wish from our website. best regards stewart mcsherryiloco posted Wed, 02 March 2005 at 12:44 PM

I do remember using XFrog in the past, may have been XFrog 3.0 light. It came with a magazine on the cover disk (Digit). This one didn't allow to export to Vue at all, so it was pretty much useless. Will Xfrog 3.5 light allow the user to export their trees/plant creations for use in Vue?

Aeilkema: Yes, Xfrog Lite allows geometry export. In fact it allows every modeling feature of Xfrog Full except for animation. So if you're not an animator you will be perfectly happy with Xfrog Lite.
aeilkema posted Wed, 02 March 2005 at 2:51 PM
Thanks Orio. I'm not an animator so it would be fine for me. To bad their website states $299 and not $199 as Stewart quoted.....

I also got the 3.0 light version on the magazine. There was an upgrade to 3.5 light possible for $89 at that time. Got the program which can export to a lot of different file formats plus the basic library in .xfr and .vob format. I wouldn't want to miss it...

Word of caution....due to the heavy poly count of vue files, the xfrog plants in vue foramt do not have the intricate detail of the xfrog plants in other formats. At least was true when they first came out with the vue format which I tried. I soon went back to the other import formats.
Singular3D posted Sat, 05 March 2005 at 10:47 AM
Thanks for the information, kenwas. Didn't realize that yet. There is a nice tutorial in the backroom here, how to get xfrog plants to Vue. That should give you all the details.

Importing xfrog plants is quite easy in a variety of formats besides vob.
