I suspect curls aren't easy to do in Poser. You don't see many curly styles.

There's the Alicia Hair at RDNA. It's an afro-looking style, but comes with morphs that allow you to make it shoulder length or even a little longer. The extra texture pack has several shades of red.

If you have Poser 5, you might consider using dynamic hair. Kirwyn's Genesis Hair (in the RMP) is easy to use and comes with a great tutorial. You can make dynamic hair any color you want, and it's also pretty easy to change how curly or straight it is.

I hate to destroy the American myth, but Irish girls traditionally have raven straight black hair. All of our ballads and songs speak of 'an cailin dubh' Red hair was introduced into Ireland through immigration from Scotland and is not indigenous. I was horrified once on a trip to Boston to see a competition for the most attractive "Irish Girl" . Being genuine 100% Irish with my raven hair, needless to say I wasn't eligible, and me having direct (black) roots to the high king of Ireland and all - old Hugh himself! In my years of schooling in Dublin, in a class of 30 at any point there was always a general ratio of 25 Black: 4 Blonde: 1 Red haired lasses in the class I would also like to point out that the currently popular in plastic surgery circles "Irish nose" is also incorrect, you would have a hard job finding a girl on the streets of Dublin with small nose. We tend to have long classical noses. Phew thats my rant over! There are tons of sleek dark hairstyles available, some even free :-) Helena

The "wild and messy" hair at daz comes to mind for curls.

My Great Grandmother was 100% Irish, Red hair and very fair skin. When I was in Cove and Cork, I never saw so many Redheads in my life. My other Grandmother had what they use to say-Black Irish, Blue eyes and Black hair. She wasn't 100% anything. I'm just using her words. Oh well this is what makes life interesting.

Americans talk about the 'Black Irish' - many a myth of Ireland has erupted in the U.S.

Some say;

  1. That black hair is evidence of the Spaniards marooned on our shores during the Armada. Only thing is the number of shipwrecked Spanish sailors who landed and stayed in Ireland was few.

  2. It is also said that 'the black Irish' were the Phoenicians, (that is the first settlers). The 'red Irish' descendants are Normans descendants, Blond Irish are Vikings descendents. Only thing is which blows this theory from the water is were are the good old Gaels and what colour hair are they supposed to have?

  3. Another thought is that black hair is left over from the indigenous population who were overrun by Gaels. A tale has been spun, that there are more black Irish in the western counties (like Cork), which wasn't reached by Gaelic invaders. But were does that leave your redheads in cork? - probably down to swarming U.S tourists :-) I see a nice image of a red haired lass in Celtic costume in your gallery! Just out of interest Turtle do you have red hair :-)

But more frequently 'Black Irish' is used as a term for immigrants from Britain or generally anyone foreign. this is generally a negative connotation, but can be sometimes used in a coy way amongst friends. This term comes from the word 'blaggard' which in turn means black (hearted) Bold or Brazen. Maybe it was this term you grandmother was referring to ???

The notion of someone with red hair being the epitome of an Irish lass, is plain old incorrect. As my old school motto used to say 'The truth shall set you free' - I did not say that there are no red head's in the country, just that they are slim to middlin' and Ireland as like many other countries we has a good old melting pot going on!

"Cove"? "COVE"?????? :-) You mean Cobh my friend, once known as Queenstown. Last port of call of both the Titanic and the Lusitania. My Mother grew up just around the corner from there, little place called Ringiskiddy. As far as colour goes, it's basically black hair / blue eyes = Pict, red hair / green eyes = Celt. I'm definitely in the latter camp, or I used to be - the eyes are the same colour, but the hair's 100% silver these days!!

Red hair = Nothing It is not an indication of nationality just some genetic code As we all know allot of trouble was caused due to the fact of people stating that blue eyes and blonde hair = Arian I am of canadian Irish decent and have dark hair, does that make me a Pict? if so, shall I go off and tattoo my arse blue like any good Pict!

Thank you all for the many im's glad you all enjoyed this banter, though informative I guess this dosn't help LordWexford in the mission to find some nice "Red" hair. I'm sure that something could be done with Grace lion hair it is kind of curly and I believe lots of people have made morphs for it. If you are using poser 5 one of the best methods of getting curls is through the dynamic hair room, some great effects can be achieved with the kink function. Also in the dynamic hair room there are a couple of curly styles which could be changed in the material room with a quick adjustment to the diffuse colour. The same could be said for prop hair, if you widen your search to all curly styles no matter the colour, a quick colour correction could be done in Photoshop. If blonde again it could be adjusted with the diffuse setting easy! good luck in your search as presumably time is ticking for completion of those Paddy's day cards.

<< Red hair = Nothing It is not an indication of nationality just some genetic code >> Correct! "Pict" & "Celt" are not nationalities, they are races. << I am of canadian Irish decent and have dark hair, does that make me a Pict? >> If you also have blue eyes then it might well make you of Pictish descent, but it would take a DNA sample to confirm it. Not every black haired / blue eyed individual is of Pictish descent, any more than red hair / green eyes guarantees Celtic origins. And thanks to Shamanka, I now have the hair type that I was looking for. :-)
