To me Jessi and James have a distinctive look that will be a nice contrast with used with Daz figures. I just hope it renders faster and I'm REALLY glad that I pre-ordered!

I think the struggle was to compete with the unimesh market. So CL really brought in some big guns to provide Alpha Man, LaRoo, the P6 family, etc. The human end was what they were probably expecting to help sell the program. The animals are a tough market as there's a lot of diversity in what people actually want in them...

Squid69, in one place it still shows three digits, but on the above graphic, you see five. I think I pulled a muscle when I saw it!
I detect no other changes in animation, so far. Probably no change in hair or cloth room. I don't care! They chose to implement only certain key changes and not go WAY over-ambitious. If they do this once every 12-18 months, that is a healthy attitude toware continuous, paced improvmement. Congratulations Curious Labs!
Here is my first guess about rendering. It is Firefly. They are committed to fire fly. Unless they have enabled the engine to take advantage of RAM more efficiently, I would guess there will be NO INTRINSIC improvement in render speed.
BUT (a BIG but!) there are some new tools in the firefly window. You can render shadows separately (shadow catcher). You have ambient occlusion and image-based lighting and point lights, which may very well reduce the need for "29-light dome arrays" and huge, heavy shadow map sizes, etc. And this little tidbit:
THAT COULD BE HUGE. If it means what it seems to mean, successive frames of animation would NOT have to render shadow map if somehow the program can be signalled that 'nothing has changed' on many shadows.
What I am saying is this: Firefly intrinsic render power, perhaps not changed. But new lighting and render features could help us LEARN to setup renders efficiently, leading to substantial improvement on render time.
I am very elated over this release, based on the little we can see so far. Very pleasantly suprised.

I think the creasing is a counter for the effects of rounding. So you can set an indedpendent crease in a mesh to prevent a sharp corner from being a rounded one. Improving the programs' usefulness for handling mechanical meshes.

Man, everything does look great :D I just don't understand why the tenacity of holding onto Content Paradise. :/ It would have been better IMHO to just have a separate module/program - I gather it uses Internet Explorer (for windows anyways) as the underlying engine but here's where the problems start. Plus, the whole browser in a program idea I think is really dated and doesn't always execute well. Some of us would rather communicate with our browser or browser of choice. Personally, I know where RDNA, Sixus1, Cubed and those sites are. I think I know where Renderosity is - I'll have to double-check. ;)

hauksdottir posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 4:24 AM
Hmm... It looks like a couple more tools on the tool bar icon thingy (there's a finger for morphing). Not having to do so much stitching of sequences will please the animators. 4 rendering engines ought to provide enough flexibility. What amuses me is the possibilities for people who like to play. This tidbit under lighting: "Set specular & diffuse controls for individual lights. For example, use a diffuse only negative light to darken a specific area of any 3D scene." A negative light? Can you see drow or evil demigods bringing their own shadows with them? Or a tax collector darkening the doorstep? Or a cursed castle? Or adding a raincloud to a scene with diffuse darkness under it? Yes, I can tweak in PhotoShop, but doing it in 3d inside the renderer where I can still move the camera is so much better! I'm looking forward to using point lights... not needing 6 lights per candle or will-o-the-wisp means that I can put more into a scene. (As much as I like Anton's "Candleworks", that is a LOT of lights.) I really wish that there were new animals, but maybe with Cubed being a part of Content Paradise, we can nudge a bit harder to get them. Since most people render images with people in them, I'll have to accept that focus on providing new humans (and they look really great, especially James). And if the new figures have some accessories (like clothes and hair), it will be a lot better than buying a nude figure, and also HAVING to buy 3 morph packs so she can speak, separate skin texture, and a new wardrobe and wig. Including a complete figure is good value. Having 4 of them is great value. Having the extra figures from RDNA and Sixus1 just makes it sweeter... the difference is a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a banana sundae with sprinkles, syrup, and cherries. :) I also wish that the skeletons were for the new figures... using that subsurface scattering for a translucent figure with a skeleton inside? Besides victims of evil scientists getting hit by a lightning bolt or obscure radiation, there are charming evryday uses such as a hand cupping a candleflame. Not perfect. It won't please everybody. There will be hairballs on the carpet. But I expect that for the next year, the experts here will be pulling tidbits out and saying "gee, look at this!" and our eyestalks will swivel as we take a closer look. Little lightbulbs will go on, and someone will giggle hysterically as they go running off to build a scene with the new feature. Hmm... that new depth/atmosphere control ought to make underwater scenes easier to assemble... and not just for mermaids, what about under the ice of Europa? So many ideas, so little time.... Carolly

The purpose of CP isn't, and never has been, to replace the current sites. Ultimately, it's there to make things easier for folks. The idea is sound, the execution is what bit. Looking closer at some other elements in P5, though, I'm fairly certain "turning it off" will be possible again, though not quite as easily, and for a reason that may bug some folks. My personal observations on the structure of P5 is that it is sorta halfway done in a lot of ways. I think that the parts I see that are "halfway" done are now very much all the way done. Which means that the display system has been shifted pretty much into an xml system fully -- that's the new window structurte. XML means some sort of browser, no matter how you look at it. In this case, the application itself. SInce it is designed for two latforms, it is possible they basically shifted the interface into a built in parser, or, in short, they made their own browser, and CP is intended to use that directly or via a bridge of some sort into the underlying browser in use by the OS. That said, though, there's no question the main thrust of CP is towards the newer users or business users, who want a simple conduit directly to the content without the vagaries of forums and other stuff. They don't care about that stuff -- they just want to be able to find things, lol. (in short: I think CP is now more integrated, and while it annoys us, it might not annoy the newer users)

The purpose of CP isn't, and never has been, to replace the current sites. Never said it was ;) I see it as a direct channel to featured sites. That's great. But so is a just creating a web shortcut and clicking on it and letting your prefered browser pick up the URL. I may be missing the point of a "web browser". A good site design can feature a cohesively built marketplace and search facility if that's needed. Again, I may be missing the point of "web site". No bash here and I'm looking forward to this program but I think Paradise will be a flop the second time around. odeathoflife, I also noticed that Zygote is mentioned as a partner. It makes me wonder if they had a had a hand in designing the new P6 meshes. Surely their name wouldn't be mentioned so prominently if it was just in reference to Dork and Posette;) Besides, the Jessie and James meshes appear so different from the other figure meshes in the past in the way they appear to be modeled. I wonder if e-frontier coughed up the $$$ to have Zygote design the new models? If you look at the Zygote site, it seems as though the medical field wasn't lucrative enough for them, so they've started branching back out into other things, again;) In all honesty, Dork and Posette were very good and useful at the time Poser 4 was released and with what Poser was capable of then. How would anyone know at the time how long it would be until Poser 5 was released, and how all of us would learn to get the most out of Poser 4 in the meantime;) Just my theory. Looks good. There are a lot more new features than I had originally expected. I think it's great, but I suspect there will be a bit of a learning curve. We're only now learning to fully use P5 features like the hair room and material room. I hope it doesn't take as long to figure out the P6 features! And it looks like being a merchant is going to become even more complicated, with P4, PP, P5, P6, and D|S to support.
I, too, noticed the difference in mesh density between Jessi and James. I hope it is just the high-res vs. the low-res version. Even without the mesh, James' face looks noticeably "low-res" to me.
They do look quite different from the Mil people - notably, their very deep eyes and low brows. It's a different look, but very Caucasian-looking. Makes me wonder how well they will do non-Caucasian characters.
I do like what I see of the kids. Looks like they fill the age gap between the Young Teens and the Pre-Schoolers. (But no new baby? Or are we supposed to buy the Cubed ones?)
Interesting that LaRoo is included. Perhaps all the content they are showing in their promos is included, which would mean Koz's hair is, too.
I, too, am disappointed that there are no new animals. The P4 animals are hopelessly outdated. They could've at least gotten Lyne to do new textures for them or something.
Now I can hardly wait to get my hands on P6. I wonder if there's any chance they'll ship earlier than Mar. 21?

If these new figures are as good as they do look and if they can finally get the Content Paradise running as it's supposed to, DAZ has some very serious competition.... and I've got a reason not to shop at DAZ anymore. These new characters look so much better then M3, V3 and the lot of them do.

"Dark lights", it looks like characters can be possibly cloned instead of loaded again, but possibly share resources, but have different material changes, and some sort of "mimic lite", tying phonemes and expressions to sound files? Some new morph management system, saving an entire character's material files, a more robust python.. lus of course the new main characters. I could pass on alphaman, but that Bot sidekick pal looks pretty dang cool! And I'm sure we'll see some exclusive free Sixus characters tied into the new content paradise, since they are a partner now. Now I am a real photographer. My trusty Minolta SRT101 died after 23 years of hard service and I replaced it with a Nikon F2. I need a camera which will survive a war if it is going to go into the wilderness with me. Hard granite and soft desert talcum powder sands are both destructive. I also have a little digital (my gallery pictures are being taken with it), but it doesn't have any of the controls I'm used to: like being able to manipulate exactly is in focus and how much light is entering and the fun stuff like turning water to milk and the sky purple. So if the rendering controls allow me to shoot a scene with some expectation that the analogy between them is more than a name, I'll be a happy camper.

Even if/when 'the movies' go digital, the underlying physics and technique of capturing the light of the world and shaping it on a media pioneered 150 years ago remains relevant. With all due respect gareee I think and hope they are headed in the opposite direction of your wishlist...less CAM/Instamatic and more SLR/Panaflex. hmmmm... looks interesting and impressive. I do have a few questions concerning the new content. 1) Are there any nude full body shots available? I like the look of James' face, but I haven't seen his body. Or Jesse's for that matter. 2) How are the new figures mapped? Don and Judy were pretty much mapped like M2 and V2. Is there new mapping for these figures? Do they use the same textures as Don and Judy or something different? 3) What morphs are available for the new figures? Do they have a complete morph package for them available? 4) Is there any existing figure that they can share clothing with, or will they need new custom clothing? 5) What clothing and textures come with the new figures? 6) Can the new figures be used in P4 and P5, including the new morphing technology? 7) Is the new morphing technology really new, or like the method Dodger uses with the Aeon figures (a different method of injection where channels are loaded as part of a readscript). 8) Do the new figures use a genital switch like the M2/the Dork/Don, or do they have seperate conforming genitalia? 9) Is there any other new content in the way of animals? If so, what? Are these the same animals that we've had since P4? And a couple of questions on cloth and hair: 1) Does collision detection work on strands in the hair room now, fixing the P5 hair room problem? 2) Can negative values be used in both/either the hair and cloth rooms to give a floating up effect when draping?
Gareee posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 9:30 AM
Operaguy, the only reason I mentioned that, was that most people know what a "fish eye lens" effect is. I don't even have a clue what you would call it in other systems... it's just a popular term, like a rack focus shot. Any system which has some presets that I can easily understand without getting out a calculator is good, IMHO. And pdxjims (BTW, how the heck didja get that nick???) I might do morphs for the new characters, but wanna play with them first, to see what's there. And I also would like to know answers to many of your questions.. we'll have to revisit this list, once P6 is in our hands. Our hands.. I'm part of the maddening crowd now. I'm hip, I'm cool, uh, yeah.... right! ;)

randym77 posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 9:38 AM
Don't know about the rest, but collision detection does work in the Hair Room. You just have to keep the hair and the figure low-res enough for your machine to handle the calculations. And you can use negative values to make the hair float. You can get some nice underwater effects that way.
operaguy posted Fri, 11 March 2005 at 9:44 AM
actually, garee, the more they "deep tool" the camera features, the easier it is to lay 'user-friendly' presets in place ON TOP OF the 'true-camera' settings as "saved sets." Could be in the form of a 'Pose' for the camera. ::::: Opera :::::

Maybe I should change it to MegaSponge or HyperNoodle... nah. But now you see why I never tried a different one. randym77: I meant collision self detection in the hair room. I'm not sure that is fixable. It's a resource issue, I'm pretty sure. If you use really low-res hair, and a really low-res collision object, collision works perfectly. High res, and it works imperfectly or not at all. V3 is way too high res to work well, and probably even Judy is, depending on your machine. I suspect we won't get really good, high-res dynamic hair until there's a big improvement in hardware. Or maybe network rendering.

Two thing that seem promising me to me are the edge smoothing and the seperation of diffuse and specular in the lighting. If I'm not mistaken the smoothing is based on an angle, like the way UVMapper Pro uses an angle to split welded vertices and allow hard edges. This feature will let you pick the angle (usually less than 45 degrees)that the smoothing oocurs. Less than the number and the edge is smooth, greater and it is creased. The neat thing about the lights is now I can finally do the neo-tokyo renders I've always wanted where there are dozens of specular highlights without having to worry about washed-out diffuse lighting. Throw in the point lights, and P6 is going to be the bestest!

Got an email from CL today... Download Preorders Electronic download orders are scheduled to begin processing at approximately 9AM PST on March 21, 2005. Customers should begin receiving confirmation emails with their Poser 6 download details as the orders are processed, but it will take some time to process all the preorders, so please be patient if you do not receive an email right away. We expect all download preorders to be processed within 24-48 hours. Physical shipments will leave first thing on the 21st apparently but i didnt read that part since i preordered the download..

Got it too.... don't forget the note, it's an important one. Note: We have secured additional bandwidth to accommodate the anticipated volume of downloads in our Web Stores during the first few days after release. However, please be patient if you experience difficulty with your download, and try again during off-peak hours before contacting customer service.

Grasshoppers may be patient, but I expect this crowd to be spending their work time Monday clicking on the site every 15 minutes.
Hmm.. I wonder if I can save shipping by camping in their parking lot?
(just kidding)*
Carolly *It is supposed to rain Monday, so camping would be less than ideal.

Yes I can.... I've taken the whole next week off! If it's good, perhaps I'll take the rest of the month off too.

Physical Preorders Physical product should arrive in our Digital River warehouses in the US and the UK within five to seven business days. Yes, the people who picked the download option will get it at least a week earlier than the rest of us. Sigh. But I'm hoping it will arrive sooner than April. I have some vacation time to kill before April 1. :-)

April? I'll waterproof my tent.

Hmmm...I don't understand why they couldn't have prepared for the boxed sets to be received on the same day that the downloads go up...
kuroyume0161 posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 12:14 AM
What do you mean by 'received'? How many days do you think they can guarantee for shipments to arrive? Will they all arrive exactly 3 days, 2 hours, 7 minutes after shipment (all shipped from the around the world simultaneously)?
There is no possible way to coordinate shipment arrivals with the instantaneous world-wide availability of the download version.
ETA: And what an uproar will be heard if people's credit cards are charged on the 21st but they are made to wait three, five, or seven days before being able to download. The launch date is the launch date - if shipment were instantaneous, this would be a moot point...

I'm still hoping that they'll send the boxed version out sooner than they anticipate. Companies often give themselves a wider margin than they actually need, because there are strict federal laws governing the mail order business.

Well, unless they're shipping tomorrow... :)

No, I don't expect them to ship tomorrow. But they're shipping to DR first, which according to their estimate will take 5-7 days. DR will then ship it to us. I'm hoping it won't really take a week or more to get the product to DR. Usually shipping estimates are padded a bit. More than once, I've had the package arrive before the notice telling me it hadn't been shipped yet.
hauksdottir posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 2:47 AM
Well, true... they could hold the downloads up until DR says that they have all the boxes packed, individually labeled, and sitting in the loading-dock with trucks lined up at the gates reving their motors. They could, but it would be mean. Why make the downloaders wait an extra week or two if the data is ready? They get it first. People who get hardcopies get something solid with manual that they can put stickie-notes all over, folded quick-start cards, flyers with special offers, clean CDs... whatever they tuck inside the box... and a box to keep it all together. I've had computers die on me often enough that having the real CDs is far preferable to a download. Carolly

I must confess that I NEVER-EVER put stickie-notes all over my manuals!!! Only on the several hundred areas of interest! Harumph! ;0)

That's what CD/DVD-writers are for? I methodically, almost maniacally, collect updates, downloads, data and write archive DVDs when necessary. Still, the hardcopy is a good selling point and also has the advantage of verifiability.

This WIN98 box takes almost 2 hours to record a regular data CD with about 650MB. It is very pokey. Until a month ago I didn't have a machine which could record a DVD. The stuff I download, especially purchased items, get recorded... but I'd still rather have hard copies of the programs. :chuckle: And you are right about where the stickie-notes go. I'll even label the bits sticking out. Carolly
constantine_1234 posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 7:14 AM
Hard copy manuals are a crap shoot. Too often the manuals are not really helpful. However, when they are it's better to let someone else do the printing. It's too confusing to read manuals on-screen, and switch back and forth from work screen to manual screen. The boxes get thrown out so there is room for humans to move around.

I have my boxes of unused 3D software arranged artfully on a shelf face-forwared because I like the images on the cover, and it looks like I am super3Dgeekman, but it is all an ironic illusion. The violin on trueSpace and that crazy gorilla on Animation:Master are my favorites. ::::: Opera :::::

I made a choice between keeping all my boxes or having room for humans to move about freely. The boxes keep going out the door.
