Subject: WHEN AN OBJECT ROTATES IN THE VERTEX MODELER, WHAT DOES IT REVOLVE ABOUT?

Usually, when rotating objects in the Vertex Modeler, or duplicating with symmetry, the object flys off the screen, and much time is lost zooming out far enough to find it. If it always happened, I could just accept it as another 'undocumented feature' of Carrara. But sometimes, like rotating multiple spokes in a wheel, it behaves just fine. Is there a way to stop things from flying away?

You can change the center of rotation to a particular vertex by Ctrl+Alt+clicking on the vertex. If you Ctrl+click on a vertex you'll send the working box to that point. Select the plane you want before duplicating with symmetry.

Excellent! Thanks.

Not on OS-9, unfortunately. That control sequence is pre-opted by other functions. Another problem I'm hoping to be free of when I finally migrate fully.

That's a pity. There should be an option in Carrara to change hotkeys/shortcuts. It really makes sense for any program.

This is one of the more frustating things I find about Carrara, but once you get in the habit it's not so bad. What Carrara revolves around is the selected geometry (or element(s) in the assembly room.) So make sure you select something before rotating the scene.

Zekaric: Quite so. It took me a while to figure that out, but once there, it works for you.

I actually find that very handy for camera moves -- esp in the vert room. I have learned to make a selection in the area I want to focus on so I can swing around and eyeball it from different directions. The main downside is you can't have an active selection you mean to DO something with during this time.

The CTRL_ALT_Click works great for keeping things from flying around in the Vertex Modeler! Thanks, falconperigot.
