I don't modle for daz figures (can't afford em)
i just did a set of real fully modled (not bumpmapped and transmaped but actual scales) scale mail for posette in the free stuff.

I wouldn't mind modling for her since technically stuff for her sells. but, most stuff for her you have to buy... i could easilly spend $2000 on daz figures and items for them. I just don't have that kind of cash.
And honestly .. i played with vicky 2 on a friends pc .. she's got some really nice morphs i'd love to see in posette .. but .. for the most part that's it .. i don't overly care for her. Posette's always been my favorite :)

Looks good... and I'm glad to see the armor protect the vitals. The corset/cuirass part of it needs to be in 2 pieces (or something) with buckled straps, otherwise she has no way to get it on (shoulders wider than waist). Front & back pieces is the usual solution, since the area under the arm can be protected and the tops of the shoulders can have another piece of armor or a cloak or a chain cowl helping to protect the joint. Given the realities of hammering out and wearing armor, I'd almost suggest flattening the chest a bit and telling the artist to make that part of the figure invisible. With the gorget at the neck, everything ought to be concealed, and it saves rendering time anyway. The other solution is to go with the operatic valkyrie look and call attention to the breasts, but even in the SCA they don't do that... at least not locally. ;^) Carolly

Mordikar: just a thought here... Maybe you could start modelling clothes specifically for the new free character Nea (or Naena) that is Posette at the base and for whom the link was posted here today (or yesterday rather). I tried to fit Posette's clothes on her but I'm not good enough in Poser and it doesn't work for me. ;o(

Mordikar, I just remembered you popped back into the community after a one to three year hiatus right? Brother, Daz3D Michael 3.0 and Victoria 3.0 are now FREE. No you didnt misread that. Happened about a month or so ago. They are now gratis, complimentary, and thier cost is diddly divisible by squat. In fact they are reworked, they are now called M3SAE and V3SAE (Special Anniversary Edition I believe) and include a bunch of expression morphs (head morph pack may be necessary for use of this, not certain). Anyhow, get yerself over to DAZ, and get M3 and V3, youre more than talented enough to create any clothing for them that you cannot find free. Just que them up for download, youll see them in your shopping cart with $0.00 due, and then select the paypal as opposed to credit card option. As nothing is due, you wont go to any paypal form, just a page to instantly download your new millennium characters :) Sorry about what I just did to your precious free time! Logan

hauksdottir: Like i said still way WIP.. i'm just getting basic shapes donw :) i do however plan to split the chest piece in half and model straps :) just not that far along yet sa with the vision in my head i need to get other stuff done so that i don't have problems with the straps being in the same place as other pieces (don't wanna hide the details) :) logansfury : Wow michael and vicky are free? ... odd i never saw that in the daz newsletter ... must have skipped that one.. maybe i'll look into it. Still have the issue of loading a super hi-res figure then covering the whole thing in realistic hi poly count armour ... just seems like a waste to me :) I have Aiko.. i don't like her face or body at all ... i know she was designed to be an anime character .. and realism wasn't the heart of her .. but .. something about her bugs me and i don't quite know what it is. Once i get this piece finnished i'll look at what i want to do next ... but ask logan guys it could take me a while :)

That's what I hate about V3..everything is for her and sometimes it seems there is nothing for anyone else. I'm not a V3 fan at all. I don't use her in anything and probably never will. This is going to be a really good piece for Posette. Kristta PS. Been using Poser for less than a year and already trained to think that everything released for a female is going to be for that horrid V3 animal.

i have some other stuff i'm working on too including an archery pack ... but i think before the archery pack is release i may want to find a morph artist who can male morphs for the quiver so the strap will fit on p4 fem, p4 male, michael, vicki, and steph... but i like modling for posette it kinda makes me diffrent :) the more i look at this the more i think the hip guards need to be thinner... more space between them.

The belt at the waist seems to be merely decorative right now (the side buckles will hold the cuirass in place). I'm not sure about using it to support the weaponry... unless maybe a dagger and belt pouch. I suspect that having an over the shoulder set-up for the sword would be better and less apt to get entangled. Carolly

Oh yeah, Shoulder harness is a very very cool idea, although in support of your own previous suggestion Carolly, Id still like to see a hip worn swordbelt for use by winged females :)

{hug} You need that, too! Just walk away from the machine and clear your head. Pet a cat, check out a garden, put on a CD and dance through the livingroom... something where the feedback isn't visual but aural or tactile or whatever (exercise another portion of the brain). You're being creative, better and more original than most people, so figuring out how things should work will be more of a problem. So, indulge in a bit of pampering... 20 minutes of sitting with your eyes closed just listening to your favorite piece of music, for example. Carolly

OH YEAH!! Those boots are just fantastic :) lesse, I can group in max, if the rhino file can import to it. Ive never done a .cr2, so I dunno how that would fly. Ill at least volunteer for the grouping aspect if no one else is available. Logan
Mordikar posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 9:50 PM
actually logan i dont know if max and do rhino files ... theres a tut out there some where for how to cut things into groups in rhino. but xurge always says don't cut groups in rhino ... and he's right, i've never managed to cut groups in rhino and bring it into poser with out getting SERIOUSLY ugly seams. So .. what i normally do is mesh it as an obj, bring it into poser, and then user posers grouping tool to form my groups ... it's a serious pain in the kiester, and takes forever .. but it works flawlessly every time.
really the only pieces that'll be really bad will be the cuiras, the straps for the shoulders and hips, and possibly the tops of the hip guards... the rest of the pieces are made to fit in a single group.
and the gorget is gonna be a smart prop parented to the chest ... why the chest? so it doesn't bend thru the chest armour.. gorget's aren't very bendy any way especially metal ones .. so users will just have to use care with bending of the neck. Also i plan to scale this armour so it fits over the p4 fem catsuit... theres no coverage of posette's nether regions and i've never been fond of posette being naked with armour on.

You are going to hate me for this... but gloves to match the boots (which are indeed sweeeeeeeet), rather than wrist guards might be better. You can do a turn-down top to them as well. This sets her up as a falconer or archer rather than a swordswoman. A black version could also control ravens to go in and fight. :evil grin: Carolly
logansfury posted Wed, 23 March 2005 at 12:13 AM
OOOOOOOOO Mordikar, Carolly is really on to something here, I have to agree that matching gloves are a must. However, here is what I think you should REALLY do if time allows: You already have the great boots that wont work with shin armor, and youve already got the great wrist/forarm guards that would not work with such matching gloves. So. Make the gloves, then include in the package the conforming tight boots from the ScaleMail, and make shinguards to go over THOSE boots that match the forarm pieces from this new armor set. Then youve got a set with options: set up ornate boots and gloves, or use simple boots and no gloves with forearm and shin armor pieces!! Whatcha think? Are Carolly and I both on the Revenge List now?
hauksdottir posted Wed, 23 March 2005 at 7:27 AM
This way a captain of the guard could have a falconer (eagle/raven/hawk) and archers up next to her (the ranged weapons), and sword/pikewomen in another ringwall, all with similar armor to show a "unit", yet customized according to their role. The body protection is identical in all cases, just the extremities would change gear. With time I might work up some textures and insignia. The White Eagles of the Northron Realm? Carolly

Ok, so last night when i went to bed i THOUGHT i was done with the modling for this armour..... lol gloves would be awesom... i'm not real sure how to do em ... i'll search for a tut somehwere ... i can probably figure em out but if someones done the ground work why reinvent the wheel :) Logan i like the variations in boots and shins, though it may be a bit of work as i'll be scaling it all up to fit over the catsuit and right now those boots don't fit .. but that's just a scaling thing. can probably be EASILLY rescaled ... poor posette will have bigger feet. hey wait.. you do morphs right logan i have a job for you! build me a morph for the scalemail boots to fit over the p4fem catsuit please!!!!! as for the sword belts ... i like two of them .. one of them will just be a modification of this belt..the other will have to be done from scratch ... and as for the shoulder harness ..well with the straps for the hipguards and shoulder ii'm not sure a shoulder harness will work without causing posing problems for those straps .. but we'll see what happens. will also have to make a scabbard now for my sword. you guys don't like me sleeping do you :P

In PhilC's freestuff (look for freestuff, archive, halfway down the page on the left) you can find a pair of heavy gloves for Mike. http://www.philc.net/ bloodsong did a falconer's glove for the Dork, available in her goodies section: http://www.3dmenagerie.com/ They'd be harder to make than boots, so you might want to talk to Phil about it. If the figure's hands were invisible, fitting would be a lot easier. CarollyMordikar posted Wed, 23 March 2005 at 9:53 AM
yeah i already figured if i do conforming gloves you'll have to turn the hands and fingers invisible... too many collision issues otherwise. I turn off visibility on hands and fingers anytime i use gloves .. i turn off the feet parts with boots too for that matter. with the cat suit i turn off almost the whole body. :) well i spent the morning making scabbard for my scimitar... and it looks really good .. finally. but looks like that's it for the day. woooo hooo i have an official morph artist :) I have some ideas for the sword belt that incorporate the current belt... problem is i like to do a lot of dual wielding characters ... (yes .. i play elven rangers in dnd ... stop picking on me!) any how if i do the belt the way i WANT it .. i'll have side belts on each sid that'll basically criss cross .. while this looks good in theory .. on a single weapon character it looks really really dumb. so i'm toying with the idea of how i ant to do this .. i could end up doing 3 belts :( a left side, right side, and both sides belts.. what i'd love to do is find a way to just do the both sides belt and have dials for turning on or off each side .. but i'm no where near capable of figuring out how to do that ...
logansfury posted Wed, 23 March 2005 at 2:01 PM
A dual left/right belt would be great!! If the material zones are grouped so that youve a main belt, a right hip "hitch" and a left hip "hitch" for the swords, then transparency setting could be used in the PPP Material Optioins or the P5 Material Room so it becomes a single sword belt at need. I think if we had a dual belt, brought it into PPP, set transparency on one of the diagonal scabbard belts, and then opened the Pose library to a new directory and hit the plus button we would have an instant local one click to set the belt. Reverse trans and save again, remove all trans and save again and there is a complete Dual, Right, and Left pose settings, I think. Should be a case of just exporting that directory and its 3 .pz2's for the armor zip to make them work for anyone I believe.

Armour looks great,,but I have a question regarding the practicality of the straps. In RL..if you cut one of those straps holding the thigh and shoulder guards on..they'll all become unstable and fall off. Not what you'd want to happen in the middle of a combat..embarrassing, not to say potentially fatal.
Mordikar posted Sat, 26 March 2005 at 1:16 AM
Actually,
the pauldrons (shoulder pieces) are held in place by the arm straps, the straps connecting to the center ring in the front and back are really no more than added protection against a pauldron slipping down a little on the upper arm and geting into an uncomfortable position. There is a matching set of straps in back that serve the same purpose. so if the front strap is severed, the pauldron is still supported by the back strap. Wost case the plate right over the shoulder would flap up (i've had a shoulder rivet pop in a fight before it's annoying but not majorly debilitating.).. and in batle minor armour malfunctions like this happened from time to time.
The thigh pads are similarly strapped in place like the shin guards, and fore arms are. If you are talking about the side hip guards that hang on the outside of the legs, then yeah if you cut a strap it would fall from the front but there is a similar set of straps in back so it wouldn't fall off..
I had similar hip protection on my armour and lost a rivet and it did pretty much the same thing ... the thigh guard falls in front but still not an opening for a seriously fatal blow.
If you want to go for historical accuracy remember most swords of the time wern't even sharp enough to behead someone in a single chop it often took 2 to 5 chops sometimes more. (this is why the guillotine was invented as a "humane" method of beheading). If the sword isn't capable of going thru the flesh of the neck and separate the thin bones of the spinal column, there's no way it would realistically cleave thru the thick of ones leg and the much thicker and solid thigh bone.
technically if i were making this armour in real life, I would put a strap at the top of the front and back rings that would hold them in place on the chest piece and provide balance for the other pieces should one be severed. But since i'm going to do the pauldrons and hip guards (and connecting straps and rings) as a seperate conforming figure from the curiass (chest piece) i felt it better to leave it off for asthetics and to fend off collision issues or straps floating in the mid air in poser.

ok work on this project has hit a major slowdown .. the main reason is because i'm in the scaling and grouping phase... I HATE grouping ... i HATE IT!!! i can't get my head to understand grouping in uvmapper, cutting the mesh in rhino leves nasty seams .. soo.... i do my grouping in the poser grouping tool which i think i have learned to master. scaling is done ... It almost wasn't because of major issues with the armour not fitting on poset even though it fit on her in rhino... poser does some freaky stuff ... however thanks to Logan'sfury i went and figured out magnets enough to fix the collision issues, rexported out of poser and imported in perfect. so work continues... trudging along slowly... i have a phone interview with charter communications monday .. another company that doesn't wanna pay me jack .. but at least this one is literally 7 minutes from the house unlike that one in dallas. who knows.

The poke thrus i've found so far are both thighs poke thru the hip guards (fix the hip guards), the belt is interfering with the straps for the hip guards (fix the straps), and theres problems with the chest piece on the sides of the brests (could be fixed by shrinking the brests on posette ... but may want to fix it any how) and at the bottom of the chespiece where posette pokes thru the chest piece (very minor, not even seen unless you close up on the hips at just the right angle)
once i clean up the cr2's i'll pack it all up and pm you a download link. but right now i'm waiting for my phone interview with Charter communications.

Ok the armour is packaged in alpha mode .. once Logan's fury gets my morphs made i'll rebuild the cr2's to include the morphs (i hope it works) and then repackage and set up for downloads in the freebies section.

Hey everyone, just to keep you updated: Ive got the armor from Mordikar, its beautiful. Im making a series of morphs for it, then sending them to Mordikar so he can load, inspect, and then save as .cr2 if he doesnt see any required adjustments. The job calls for: "both thighs poke thru the hip guards, the belt is interfering with the straps for the hip guards, and theres problems with the chest piece on the sides of the brests and at the bottom of the chest piece" Ive completed the set for the hip guards both R and L and sent those for examination, tomorrow (when I wake up in about 8 hours or so) ill start to create the morphs for chest piece and straps. night!

whoot. morphs are DONE!!! Logan rocketh most greatly.
Cr2's are rebuilt to include the morph channels and all but one are set to 1.0 just how it needs to be.
Transmaps are done for the belt to turn on and off the side belts.
Gona go over it all today and double check but i think this thing may be ready for final packaging!!

LOL...been watching poor Mordikar through this whole modeling session. You have my sincere empathy (though I'm laughing a bit). Awesome piece you've got going there!
Mordikar posted Wed, 20 April 2005 at 9:26 PM
Thanks chuck, I find that if i post a forum thread on what i'm working on i'm less likelyy to stop working on it for 3 months to a year like the scalemail.
ChuckEvans posted Wed, 20 April 2005 at 9:28 PM
Ahhh, I see. So we are being "used" as a catalyst (smile). No problem!

Im mostly to blame for the timeline on this one! Mordikar and I got into a deep, highbrow intellectual discussion about the movie Excalibur (right around about the scene where Igrain gets boinked if I remember properly) and that led to the distraction of modelling the pair of flamberges and the polearms set he's released to freebies. Combine that with the 5 or 6 days I was away when he was waiting for me to do morphs and here you have our current completion progress......The good news is that weve all access to the new freebies to play with as we wait. To wit: the addy up above :)
Mordikar posted Wed, 20 April 2005 at 10:24 PM
well chuck if by catalyst you mean a "hey get off your @#$% and finnish it already!" yeah .. Actually I stopped working on the scalemail about 2 years ago .. and i thought nothing of it untill Logan started houndung me regularly to finnish it and then it was done in ... what .. 2 maybe 3 weeks. and that was after having lost all the poser files to an hdd crash and having to go back to the rhino files and remesh. I think knowing people are eagerly awaiting something kida gives me that extra nudge to stay with it .. and it's even gotten me to finnish almost all of my old projects that i started but didn't finnish 2 years ago. :) I have the archery pack to finnish, and then thers some tiddly bit props .. like a book, and a treasure chest, little stuff like that.

speaking of the polearms set ... it's going to be the featured freestuff of the week item in the newsletter for "another 3d art community who's name i'll not mention here" next week.

Mordikar, We already have a selection of books and treasure chests. A good medieval spellbook with latches and locks is needed. IIRC, someone made a diary with a latch, but that is it. I wouldn't model a treasure chest unless I was doing something very different and special... like a reliquary or something exotic (from the 1001 Nights or the Russian tale where the soldier goes down and 3 dogs are guarding the treasures). A lot of RPG gear hasn't been done. We have weapons galore, but little for healing, cooking, grooming. Small items such as whetstones, flint and steel firestarters, combs, drinking horns, fancy torches... the stuff which fills out scenes, and makes them believable, is pretty much missing. Carolly

Rezally ...... well then .... once the armour and archery sets are done i guess it's time to dust off the old 3rd edition DnD players guide, and start goin thru the equipment lists... muahahahaha
hauksdottir posted Thu, 21 April 2005 at 8:08 AM
Third edition isn't old! (thinking about my guide to the Emporium in Arduin)

I have sitting in line of sight of my comp here, the "old" blue D&D rulebook (the single non-advanced rules for levels 1-3 or 4, the one that came out after the original small softbound 3 book ruleset). Far as AD&D goes, I never progressed beyond the original AD&D - The classic 4-book hardbound rules: Dungeon Masters Guide, Monster Manual, Players Handbook and Dieties & Demigods were my staple rulebooks for years, along with the Dragon magazine updates. I was still into it for Unearthed Arcana, Fiend Folio, and Monster Manual 2, but I think at that point they began the second edition with a whole new series of hardcovers and I stopped playing. Ive still every piece of RPG investment Id made as a kid and a teenager. Its a blast to thumb thru the old dragon mags to this day :)

me and the wife still play .. we just havn't played in a year or more ... gaming isn't big in texas. I didn't like what they did to rangers in 3.5 (yes i'm one of those elven ranger guys)

Warriors and Warrioresses ...i am happy to announce that this armour is now available in a free stuff near you .. well it's available at the "other site" who's name is a bad word around here .. It's still pending approval for the free stuff here .. BUT IT WILL BE HERE TOO SOON!!!!!

Woo Hoo !!..looking forward to the completed set :)
hauksdottir posted Thu, 21 April 2005 at 7:54 PM
We're patient... really! As long as we throw sheep to the dragon, he'll wait until we get outfitted. Most of my friends are old-timers, so we'll play first and second, but not third ed AD&D. If they were going to rewrite the rules that drastically, they should have simply made a new game out of it. Carolly
Mordikar posted Thu, 21 April 2005 at 8:34 PM
I kinda like 3rd ed ... I just don't like 3.5. As for the armour ... ITR'S HERE!!!! and available .. and WOW .. 106 downloads from 1 site in 1 afternoon??
hauksdottir posted Thu, 21 April 2005 at 9:52 PM
Someone must like it or something. ;^) :chuckle: I like the "options and extras", so that characters can be a bit more unique (I prefer Hero System, since it is much less cardboard-templated, but the options allow for a more complex character). The main advantage of D&D is that you can whip up new characters pretty quickly for convention games. The shoe-horning bugged me, though. Why should bards be thieves? Why should druids be a religious class? Carolly
Mordikar posted Thu, 21 April 2005 at 10:20 PM
Technically Druids were a religious class .. in real live they were high-priests of the pagan celtic faith... but technicalities aside ... yes they did do a bit of pigeonholeing with the character classes ...
