Hi , Poser 6 is giving out of memory errors When
I set it to final render setting and try to render :(This only Happens with WinterQueen ,
JessiHiRes , JamesHiRes ,Victoria 3 or just about any HiRes Character:(
My Memory Monitor show that Iam using less than 50%,
My System is
P4 3ghz Windows XP Pro
2 Gig DDR Ram
ATI Radeon 9600XT 256mbs
2x120gig SATA Hard drives
2 x 1280x1024 monitors
Any Ideas?
yggdrasil posted Wed, 23 March 2005 at 8:03 AM
Yeah, I got that when I loaded one of the WinterQueen sets and turned up the render settings as well. Looking in Task Manager showed 1.3GB memory available. Just switched to manual and tuned the render settings slightly. (A64 FX 52, 2GB RAM, XP Pro SP2, ATi Radeon X800 Pro)

So you ARE still around? :) I want that name, darn it! LOL. Just kidding. I'm not around here that much anymore. So, how's Poser 6?
senyac posted Wed, 23 March 2005 at 8:19 AM
Hi :) yggdrasil , I have tryed the manual setting and lowered the Max texture size and it works fine :) I wonder what PC you would need to use the Auto settings ?? What name do you want ? My user name ?:) I love the improvements that Poser 6 has :) But I have found the cloth room only calulates 15 frames out of a 30 frame walk cycle :( or 15 frames of a 60 frame walk cycle :( so it seams there a some bugs to be sorted out.

In another thread someone "In the know" said that there were known memory use problems with the included content (using the new morph system) It will almost certainly be fixed in a patch .

yggdrasil: >> Just switched to manual << what does this mean? ::::: Opera :::::
senyac posted Wed, 23 March 2005 at 8:56 AM
I think its more than memory use problems with the included content , because V3 , The GIRL and Aiko3 cause the same problem if you use a HiRes V3 texture on them :( So I would say its a memory issue with Hi Res textures.

I have out of memory rendering problems as well. Sigh... still trying to figure it out.

well, surprise....CL releasing a buggy product....

Well, surprise, any new product is buggy. Ever buy an unplayable game such as Master of Magic and have the damned thing crash each and every turn? I didn't bother to wait for the patch... because it wasn't fun. I can't remember the last time I bought a piece of software which was totally flawless. At least we have a company which is continuing to improve and support the product... and, for the most part, this is a really nifty piece of software. It still hasn't crashed for me. Carolly

..... guess what, folks, ... I think for now, I'm retreating to my comfort zone of Poser 4. Too many crashes with Poser 6. Sad. Too Bad. I'm telling myself that I bought Shade 7 LE and Poser 6 came bundled with it. Tsk, tsk.

feh,
Anyway the bug in question if I understand it correctly has to do with the new PMD format. Also IIRC, If it is set up to use PMDs a PMD will be created for V3 when you import her.
I think (again this is all 2nd hand knowledge) That Weirdjuice said there is a way to set P6 to use the old P5 way of dealing with morphs. which should eliminate this prob until a patch comes out. Also Weirdjuice said it should be a very easy bug to fix, and even sent CL some example code... In the old days they would probably just ignore it, but I have a good feeling about this new CL crew.

Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea to order to box after all... Maybe they'll have the patch ready by the time my copy gets here.

ladies and gentlemen. has anyone set their swapfile to a max of 2GB? I'm on a 1.2ghz Athlon, 512mb ram and I'm rendering Hires James, with a customised shader setup, full render settings with strand based hair just fine...

How do you set the swapfile?
yggdrasil posted Wed, 23 March 2005 at 3:56 PM
Exact details depend on version of Windows In XP setting the paging file (swap file): - right click 'My Computer' and select properties - Select advanced tab - in performance section click 'Settings' button - select advanced tab - in virtual memory section click 'Change' - top section shows your drives, highlight a drive to adjust how big a page file to place on that drive. - OK, OK, OK, reboot

Ah OK thank you. Mine is set to 768Mb atm. I do know that when I was using P4 and doing large renders I kept on getting warnings I was running out of virtual memory and windows was increasing it. So 2GB is the max you can set it at? Or does it depend on your PC stats? (Celeron 2.2Ghz, 512Mb RAM)
yggdrasil posted Wed, 23 March 2005 at 4:58 PM
Under 32 bit Windows each individual program is limited to a 2GB address space, but you also need room for Windows' own workspace and if you are multi-tasking several programs, they can each have up to 2GB allocated. Windows tends to default to 1.5 times your physical RAM size (hence the 768 in your case). Setting it TOO large can sometimes be almost as bad as too small, since the program can get tied down in swapping data blocks into and out of memory. Also if you've got more than one hard disc, put it on the fastest one (and preferably not the same one that Windows is on). Defragmenting the disk before creating a swap file on it is also a good idea (and something you should do fairly regularly as part of general good housekeeping for Windows anyway) And decide on a size and set the min and max to that from the start. This will help prevent fragmentation which often occurs in a dynamically sized swap file and can really slow things down. However, like many Windows optimisations, there are no hard and fast rules, and what works well for one machine configuration can stink on another - experiment a bit until you find a setting that seems to work well for you and then leave it at that. Hope that helps

Thanks yggdrasil. I just have the one Hard drive, so I cannot move it. Yes I did a little PC "housekeeping" before I installed Poser 6. I do defrag the hard drive on a regular basis anyway, mainly because I'm forever moving files around lol. I have a bit experiment with my settings and see if they help :-)

Thanks from me too, yggdrasil - maybe I'll go tweak my pc a little bit on the swap file. Thanks Khai, for bringing this up as well. I'm still behaving like a baby and using Poser 4 for now.

I have solved my horrendous render-crash problems. I decreased the hardware acceleration on my windows Display | Settings | Advance | Troubleshoot option tab. I had my setting to Full hardware acceleration, so I moved it down 2 notches. This I learnt from the Curious Lab P6 Knowledge base. To increase my chances of not crashing, I went into Windows System | Advanced | Performance | Settings. Here I did 2 things - A) Visual Effects tab: select Adjust For Best Performance (this may change the visual look on your screen) B) Advanced tab: Virtual memory - opt to Change; select System Managed Size on all available hard drives (this changes what Windows does with the size of its swapfile). This I learnt from fellow members here at Renderosity. Re-booted computer. Launched Poser 6. Ah !...... no more grief and tearing my hair out.
