I just suffered the loss of my hard drive. All of the libraries that I had built up in B4 were lost. If I start collecting libraries again from the 'free stuff' how can I tell if they will function in B4? Does all B5 stuff work in B4? Does all B4 stuff work in B5?
Help...

No. Bryce5 can use Bryce4 files. Bryce4 cannot use any file type from Bryce5.
As far as telling which version freestuff is made for, Check the comment and hope they say. Although typically, if Bryce5 isn't specified, it's probably for Bryce4.
Hopefully, real soon now, you'll be able to upgrade to Bryce5.5 and it won't matter.

I was watching an episode of CSI:SOMECITYINAMERICA the other day. They had a hdd that had been in a car fire. They stripped out the disc and placed it in the gubbins of a new hdd - (swapped it with a new one...doh!) And low and behold they were able to access the data. OK so that was tv, but has anyone actually tried this?

I once did that with a 3.5 inch floppy that had been left in the car on a sunny day.
