My libraries have siraled out of control. Open to suggestion from people much more organized than myself on how to logically organize poser libraries so everything is easier to find than have to remember the authors names and what is exactly in the folders. thanx ... the ferret

i also would like advise about organizing. But also, I am sure I remeber previews for P6 showing associated content (textures, props...) on the library window with a figure but I can't find this feature. I get a floating library that is double wide but consist of the regular pane next to a library selection pane (Figures, Pose, etc.)...

I use three sub folders inside the Pose folder (! Poses, ! cloths and ! hair) simple, yet very effective. Don't move the injectors.

Well, I guess my first piece of advice would be to think about how you work, what you use most, and most importantly, where would you look for something? For instance, in my organization, I know I don't use the animals very much, so I have them in a separate runtime. I use specific figures more often than others, and I almost always clothe my character, so I put each figure in its own folder along with its clothes. When I'm looking for hair, I don't like looking in several folders and if I'm in a hurry I won't want to convert between figures, so I give all hair, including conforming, an .hr2 extension and put it in the hair folder under a subfolder named for the base figure it's for. On the other hand, someone who always does pinups and/or regulary has time to convert items might want all the base figures in one folder, all the dresses in another, all the shoes in a third, etc. Spend a little time thinking about how you would like your folders set up if there were no external influences. If you aren't really sure, maybe start by setting up some folders in your main library only, and just moving the library files around as it makes sense and trying it out. (If you aren't moving textures or geometries, it's not too difficult.) If you're not sure where to put something [a problem I have a lot], don't try to figure out where the "ideal" location is. Just ask yourself "Where's the first place I'm going to look for it." For example, if you have a dress that's kinda fantasy-ish, but your first thought when you look at it is Sci-Fi, put it in the Sci-Fi folder. It doesn't matter if it'd make sense to someone else; it's what makes sense to you. One thing I can say from my own experience is that if you want your libraries to stay organized, you have to hand-install everything yourself. Never unzip/install directly to your actual runtime; it's a swift way to a mess. Install/unzip somewhere else, then move stuff over to where you want it. It takes longer at first, but it saves time and sanity in the long run.

Agree with much of what FS says. I divide up into categories - Vicki characters, Vicki Clothes, Female Hair, Male Hair, Aiko3 Characters, Clothes etc... SciFi, Scenes, Inddor Scenes, etc. Poses: Hair MATs, Vicki Clothing MATs, Vicki Standing, Sitting, Lying. Aiko3 Standing.... etc. Some vendors or sites have their own folders if there is enough stuff - DAZ Clothing, Koza Hair, BAT clothing, Awful Soul clothing, RDNA scenes and environments and so on. In each such major folder there may a large number of minor folders - So Vicki Characters will have all the original folders for Morris chars, MutedBanshee chars, Gwen's Celeb chars, etc. Hair MATs will have Koza MATS, divided up by style: Long Hair, Short Evo etc. And DAZ Hair MATs will have Sassy Hair 2 MATs, divided up by creator. All in all I have thousands of folders in my Runtime. I use quite long descriptive names for my folders, including name of creator. Lots of work, but the only way to do it if you're to find anything. I'm tired of almost buying things twice - I forget I aleady own it :o) :] Fish

Ok I have another question. At the moment I am using P4 and have only just reinstalled a patched P5. I have not yet set up the libraries for it, mainly because of P6 coming (still waiting for my box:) I have seen various P5 information about doing this, however what I want to know is: I can set up an external runtime and link this to P6, but in P4 I have various files in my PBoost folders within P4. I expect I would have to move these back into the main runtime first to set up this external runtime, is that so? Once I have copied them into the external runtime for P6, where is the best place to put this. I do have two external hardrives, one I keep for backing up all my purchases, free stuff etc for Poser, but the other one could be devoted to this External runtime - so would all the paths be still correct or would cause problems? I do have CRpro, would I have to run this on the external runtime first to correct the paths. Jan

Here's how I organize my Runtime: Figures: Backgrounds Folder: Any figures which are scenery: Contemporary Folder Sci-fi Folder Fantasy Folder Hair Folder: Any hair figures like Koz or BVH hair Clothing Folder: Any clothing figures: Contemporary Clothing Folder Sci-Fi Clothing Folder Fantasy Clothing Folder Weapons and Vehicles Folder: Any figures which are weapons or vehicles (very small folder) Pose Backgrounds: All MAT and Pose files for background figures or props Chararcters: All MAT and INJ/REM files for the character figures. Clothing: All MAT and Pose files for clothing figures or Props ...You get the idea... my library is organized topically so if I'm doing a fantasy render, I go to my fantasy folders, a sci-fi render sends me to my sci-fi folders, etc. This helped keep my 20 gig runtime very efficient...

It's important to know which version of Poser you havebefore one can give any good suggestions. Poser 4 is handled far differently than Poser 5 & 6.

Actually it's important to know which version of Poser you're using. If you have Poser 4, much of the above-mentioned advice will not apply. PBoost would be a good utility to help organize Poser 4 installations. If you have Poser 5 or 6, then external Runtimes are a good idea. But again, it's good to know which version of Poser you have.

constantine 1234, if you are referring to my question - I did state I use P4, I have P5 (SR4) installed to and P6 to come. I also have PBoost and CRPro. Sorry if you were NOT referring to my question, but one of the others, but it is hard to know to whom you are referring in these two replies. Jan

I am just now getting into multiple runtimes. Here is what I've done: C:eternal runtimes Inside that folder are the following. Some have things in them, others are there for future use: Furrette runtime Bg and Environment runtime Hair runtime Poses runtime Lighting runtime The Girl runtime Koshini Runtime Aiko Runtime I also have one called "Millennium People" and inside it are the following: V3 Character Addons (includes DAZ V3 and head/body morphs) V3 Clothing SP3 Character Addons (includes DAZ SP3 and head/body morphs) SP3 Clothing M3 Character Addons (includes DAZ M3 and head/body morphs) M3 Clothing D3 Character Addons (includes DAZ D3 and head/body morphs) D3 Clothing **************************************** I also sort the Character and Poses folder further with subfolders. In the Character folder I sort the clothes by "morphing" and "miscellaneous". In the Poses folder I sort by "morphing" and "miscellaneous", but then go further with folders inside to sort by outfit (MFD and all it's addons in the same folder). **************************************** In my Hair runtime folder, I sort Character and Poses by Hairstyle. In Poses, I put the hairstyle and all it's addons in one folder. **************************************** If you are unfamiliar with setting up Multiple Runtimes, the enclosed link is very helpful. It's just like installing into the main Poser 5 runtime, only you are doing it to one outside Poser 5 with a different name. After you have installed your millennium figure and it's head and body morphs to their external runtime folder, COPY the !DAZ folder found in your characters external runtime libraryfigures folder, into the Poser 5 runtime libraryfigures) folder. In Poser, add the external runtimes to your library, and you can use them just like you do the Poser 5 one. It takes sometime to get used to switching runtimes for various things, but it makes finding things a whole lot easier. I'm just revamping my runtimes to put the clothing in it's own runtime as noted above. I had all V3 items in one runtime folder and between clothes and character addons it got kind of big."It is good to see ourselves as
others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we
are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not
angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to
say." - Ghandi
