hiya, Im a bit perplexed!

having perused the photography gallery, I have found that some photo's seemingly quite bland tend to get a very high amount of comments, when other awesome, brilliant even, tend to get very low amounts of comments? I noticed a mirrored tree, a simple procedure, easy in fact, hundreds of comments? I did a similar, better in my eyes image over a year ago and got 2 comments its very strange?

I have been uploading macro's of flowers with raindrops on them and the first one got 12 comments the second one didint get ANY AT ALL and the third one got 16 - some other photographic artists in this community have recieved over 80 comments for similar if not worse work? I am very perturbed by this !!!!!
Do you have to be involved in some kind of clique to get more input form other photographers....?because all comments good or bad are appreciated

please advise?!

You certainly have a point. Your Gallery has some amazing works that definitely deserve comment. My excuse is lack of time, I have never seen your postings before. I admit I should spend more time looking through the Photo Gallery and less responding to ebots of favorite artist and postings in the forum. One last thing, I'm not sure what good can come out of comparing your images and the number of comments to other artists postings. The competitive mindset is always a set-up to feel bad in the end IMHO. I have more thoughts on this subject, but am late for work, so more later:}

i know what you mean, i was going through the same frustrations as well! then i stopped to think about it, i'm happy when one person finds my work to their liking and if i'm only able to reach a small audience then i shall post my images for them and not be concerned with what's going on elsewhere in the gallery. bottom line is that i post the work i'm proud to show and if it does well that's great, if it doesn't no biggie i'm going to continue to post regardless! don't be discouraged, it's the comments you get that count, not the ones you don't. just continue to post what your happy with for the sake of you and no one else. comments, good or bad, a lot or a little, will not change the fact that you're happy with what you post, nothing should be able to take that away!!! have a good one, eb

ps... sorry to ruin your comentless streak on the linked gallery photo in your original post!!! i too am guilty of not spending enough time browsing the gallery and usually just stick to my favorites....i'm sorry for that but mostly i'm sorry because i miss out on a lot of great images by not visiting more often but one never has enough time!!!

I certainly have seen images which are in my opinion not much more than basic snapshots receive lots of comments and "excellents". Who really knows why? I do not have that answer. I discover artists on this site who were unknown to me untill I happen to look at new gallery entries or happen to see a reference from someone else. Sometimes these are wonderful artists and I simply have not been in the "area" to know they are here! As for ratings and comments, I have a gut feeling about my images and am not looking for great ratings as much as decent comments and critique when appropriate. Still, an "excellent" now and then is nice to get when I feel my image is pretty good in the first place. Apparently an image may fill a niche for someone even when I do not anticipate that. Folks judge by more than technical value and emotion, personal likes and life certainly play a part. I will take a look at your gallery..as with ryno, I have not visited your images but will. I guess I'd advise patience. There is no reason to believe that a site like 'osity would do any better at searching out and recognizing talent than the rest of the "real world" in general. Lots of great photographers out there do not have Galleries and National Geographic lining up to "ooooh & Ahhhh" their work. And, the converse about less than perfect is also true. Keep making photos. The Gallery space here is free. Enjoy it. Comment on others' work you really like. Participate in a positive way in the Forum. Over time you will achieve your own fame, if not fortune.

participation in the gallery is key... most people will look at the gallery of an artist that commented on their work & then comment in return, that is just natural & basic common courtesy for most people time is another factor, be great to comment on every pic but impossible the photo gallery alone has grown tremendously over the past few years from 4-5 pages (18 pics per page) of images to 8-12 or more a day... 180-200 pics daily... that's a lot! is there something about the image that makes it stand out from the others? or is it pretty much the same is there a variety in the work is the artist posting daily or only a few a week how long have they been here to build up such a following all this factors in to the number of comments you've already gotten some excellent answers... enjoy your time here, the art, the artists & don't worry about competing, eventually it can happen for you too :]

I think they've summed it up so I don't really have more to add. It took years before I started getting more comments. As people get to know you they will come back to see your new images and leave comments. I feel the same as you about the ratings. It doesn't mean much, turn it off if you want. It is just a way for the visitor to express their feelings about your image. I reserve my "excellents" for truly great (IMHO) photos, and hand out a lot of Greats and Goods. Everyone is different though. I will try to visit your gallery more too, you've got lots of great photos, but as others have said, time is an issue.

well thankyou for your feedback. I must add that my words here were not about feeling unaccepted ,unliked or inadequate as a photographer!!! I have no issues about my own work at all, i do it for the love of it!!! and for ME primarily!!! I am selling quantities of prints/teeshirts and greetings cards everyday from my online webshops. seemingly my angle and reasons here were not fully understood, I was trying to gauge what makes one person get more comments than others (obvious reasons aside) not get sympathy comments ( I would rather have no comments than that ) So in closing it is participation in the community that is the key! thankyou all for your feedback.

I have gone through most of my life with never more than a handful of friends. Unlike family, you can choose your friends. It's better to have a few good friends than a boatload of fare weather friends.

My observation has been, view others work, find the ones you like, add them to you favorite artist list by clicking on the "Add To My Favorites" on the page with the gallery image. You will then get an ebot every time that person posts an image to the gallery.

Answer every last one of them and post a comment. Laws of averages and the competitive mindset combined will get you all the fare weather friends you want.

There are artists who can take a picture of their desktop, post it to the gallery, and get 50 comments, all with "Excellent" ratings.

This same artist then spends the rest of his day on-line commenting on everyone's gallery...

If you have not done so already, go back into your gallery and add the names of everyone who has made a comment about your images to your "Favorite Artist List" and comment on all their ebots you get in your email. It works just like buying a round at the bar...

Yank My Doodle, It's a Dandy!

One bit of good advice I got from Cynlee involves the "thumbnail" images. I will go to your gallery in a moment so bear with me if this is not an issue! Others who post need to know, too. I posted an image and the thumb was the 'fancy little crop' with a teaser of the image. Believe it or not some members do not have a high-speed connect and the thumbnail can make or break the image for viewing. I learned a lesson there! Now, to look at your stuff.... TomDart.

About my thoughts later it seems that they have all been expressed much better than I could have done. Glad that you asked I have certainly gotten some more food for thought. Cindy your comment made a lot of down to earth sense. Tom thanks for the tip I have just started to think about those who are limmet by thier connection speed and screen size.
