Subject: Creating fake depth on textures.

Sometimes you can "preshadow" a models texture to make it appear as if it is more "3D" than what it really is. Meaning, I had created a diagonal mesh map in Photoshop that would simulate metal/wire mesh through what was originally to be just a transparency map wrapped onto a cylinder. It worked, yet the mesh looked far too flat (basically, because it was), I wanted more depth to the wire mesh without having to make drac create curved wire mesh for me in Wings3D. ;o)

Going back into Photoshop I added shadowing to the diagonal mesh and used that seperate image to drive the Diffusion on the DTE/procedural texture that I had applied to the cylinder, then of course as before, the original alpha map drove the Transparency. Much more "3D" looking without having to model more. Works very well on models that are mid-range to background.

Download the Photoshop psd file (with all the seperate layers) (10.2Mb)[Here.](http://market.renderosity.com/~bryce/weaved_tube_psd.zip)(2048 x 2048) If you want/need to cut down on your scene file size, you can always re-size the alpha & diffusion maps to 1024 or 512. Keep rendering! AgentSmith

There's also a Plugin that makes that kind of mesh. I've used it in PSP7. See the top-left corner of Zhann's website.

Awesome... Thanks... It is sometimes called Texture Baking in other 3D software,It is done alot for Games especially now Days when you build models in Excess of 1 million Polys for the High Resolution Textures for your Low Poly Game meshes...

Um, everything is clear, except how to do that shadowing thing in Photoshop. It's too regular for you to have done by hand and I really can't think what technique or filter would do that.

Great tutorial and stuff. Thanks.

Kemal posted Sat, 09 April 2005 at 2:04 PM

@ FoleyPro and Erlik:

Take your white backround layer in EyeCandy2000 oven and "bake" slowly on 200 deegres for 12 hours on "weave" setting, rotate for 45 deegres after 6 hours, and voila, perfectly done mesh-roast :P

Kemal, this is crazy... COOL :D

Erlik posted Sat, 09 April 2005 at 3:52 PM

Hell and damnation. Well, I should familiarize meself more with the filters I do have installed. As a penance, does anybody want this fence-building kit? It's just one of these three elements, but you can build BIG fences with it. It's an OBJ, 94 kB unzipped. I'll throw in bump and transmap tiffs, and all four files (I don't want to remove the references to the MTL file from the OBJ, so the MTL goes in) are 118 kB zipped. I'd add the green paint texture, but the basic bump map for that is not mine. The wire mesh texture is the ordinary hammered steel.

The mesh was made with the plugin; Alienskin's Eyecandy 5 : Textures, they have a demo on their website. (www.alienskin.com) Download the presets for the plugin at the link. AgentSmith

How I can open this plugin ?

Erlik posted Sun, 10 April 2005 at 9:18 AM

Bryter, send me your mail address. alexsm, you have to install the plugin into Photoshop and then use the presets. I created mine with Eyecandy 4000, and I guess the presets would work there too.

The might not work with Eyecandy 4000, but you can try. The plugin I used (and the presets came from) was called "Eyecandy 5:Textures". Info; http://www.alienskin.com/ec5t/index.html Demo (full - 30 days) http://www.alienskin.com/downloads/getmail1.asp AS
