I occasionally need a figure for my artwork in other programmes so am thinking about Poser - but have also seen there is Poser Artist - would this be OK for my needs as it is much cheaper!!

Poser Artist should be fine, if all you want to do is pose the figure and export it for rendering in another application.
Another possibility would be DAZ|Studio. (www.daz3d.com) It's free, and they also offer free human figures to use in it. Dunno how compatible it is with your software, but it does export to Bryce.

DAZ will allow you to export wavefront obj's So I bet that would work. Heck as randym said it's free, might as well give it a go.

Thanks both of you - I will give the free one a try first.

if you can get it to run ! Check out the Daz Studio forum at Daz before you download. The latest build looks like total crap.

Have D/L Daz Studio with free Victoria D/L free Michael, and managed to dress and pose them OK sp that's good enough for me. Now I just need to turn Michael into a wizard and I'll be happy. Thanks everyone for your input.

glad it worked for you. doesn't work on my computer, just a standard xp, nothing unusual. There's a set of wizard clothes for David, I think, at Daz you might be able to resize for Mike.Try running a search here and you'll find some interesting freestuff too. Good luck.

Thanks for the info about wizard clothes for David - I'll give it a go. I'd really just like an image of a wizard and/or a fairy that I can use - does anyone do ready dressed models that you can buy/have for free/share/exchange for something (I wish) and import into, for instance, Photoshop?

A lot of people sell tubes or brushes of faeries. Wizards aren't as common, but there probably are some. You might ask in the Photoshop forum.
