HOW!!??!?!?!?!?? all I wanted since I started using poser was to have it start without pre-loading a character (and associated textures) also, can you unload textures that poser has placed into memory? its bloody annoying because when you save a scene, it also saves all textures currently in memory (tough if youve spent a while trying out different outfits!)

Edit your General Preferences: First make Poser as you wish it would be when your program starts. Then Edit your General Preferences, Launch to Perfered State, then click SET PREFERRED STATE. Then use the Interface tab Launch to previous state.
Best Wishes,
Rance

I have tried that. James keeps returning. Maybe it is is a fluke with my system, but the guy just won't go away for me.

Not General Go to the Display Tab... The General Preferences won't cut it.

check out Poser Guide issue 1. There is a good tutorial on how to do it.FlyByNight posted Thu, 21 April 2005 at 11:54 AM
You have to delete the figure first, set up your workspace as you want it, then set your launch state. That worked for me.

I have Poser 4.0.3 . I get Poser to load with an empty stage with no Initial Guy thus: Start a Poser job. Delete the Initial Guy. Set the lights as I went them (all white and not like in a nudist studio). Save the job as _.pz3 . Distribute copies of _.pz3 around the folders where I do Poser work. Click on one of them whenever I want to start a Poser job.

This is for Poser 6...
Now once the viewport is empty, go to Edit Pulldown > General Preferences. Now on the Document tab click the following: 1) Launch to Preferred State 2) Set Preferred State Click "Ok" and you are done. The above picture is what I launch to (Sans the preferences).

excellent, I see where your going with this! the only thing I can see with the general preferences idea is that poser will have loaded James when you create the preffered state, and therefore his textures will be stored into memory, and I assume that the loaded textures will be stored with the prefered state. I think this, plus the temporarily removing James from the geometry folder will work! thanks alot everyone, alot of help! how about the other thing? can you remove textures from Poser Memory when they are no longer needed? sometimes I go through the entire uzilite collection, plus a fair few other clothing options when deciding on a look for an image, each one loads there textures into memory, and they stay there even when you delete the object using them (in my opinion this is a big oversight by Curious Labs, it SHOULD look at the associated textures the object uses, check to ensure that no other object is using them, and clear them from memory if there not). theres also that stupid thing about it loading two of the same texture into memory from the same path. I have done some tests on memory use of this problem, and it does indeed load the texture into memory twice before rendering. just like it loads unused textures into memory!! HOW STUPID IS THAT!

I see a need for a tutorial, so in the absence of Dr Geep, look up about 12 messages... ;-)

It's not just you. I did all the above and James still is standing there. I guess I'm just going to have to get used to him.

Natolii, Did you NOT get the General Prefrences dialogue box using the Edit menu? Then from the Document tab select Launch to preferred state and Interface tab Launch to previous state. Your screen capture is most excellent. templargfx, I'm not sure what's going on here. If you delete the initial figure and set all as you wish and then follow Natolii's directions that should do the trick. I wonder if there is a default file that is 'Read Only' checked in your poser folder(?). I've never had any problems starting with an empty studio in either P4 PP, P5 or P6. Well, Best Wishes All. I hope you solve your problem, templargfx. Anthony's method should work short of changing you General Preferences ...

I've previously been able to achieve an empty studio in Poser 4 and Poser 5, I followed Jim Burton's steps. I followed Natolli's instructions. Obviously something is different, but, for now, it's not worth the effort to figure it out. I just say "hello, James," pretend he's my boss, and hit the delete button. It actually is pretty satisfying at that point.

Hello All, I note there IS a new tute on setting up the default Poser file here in the forums. I'm wondering about the files in the PoserRuntimePrefs folder. Therein you'll find the Poser.ini file and preferredState files. I believe that if any of these are tagged Read-only than that would prevent the user from making any permanent changes to the interface. I note that none of mine are Read-only and I've had no problems setting up the Poser interface. Something you might want to check. Best Wishes, Rance
