tibet2004uk posted Sat, 23 April 2005 at 1:23 AM
Gonna try again I think!! And what does "hacks" mean?
tvernuccio posted Sat, 23 April 2005 at 2:46 AM
looks like a good book, Cindy! links on the page worked fine for me. i don't understand why he used the work "hacks" here either. must be some slang i'm not familiar with.

Way I see the word 'hack' is too modify a program/code, often in an unauthorized manner, by changing the code itself.
DJB posted Sat, 23 April 2005 at 3:18 AM
Well hack is to cough...or in Pc terms to access someone elses computer.Illegally...and what jimry said.

No. The original meaning for hacking is tweaking the sourcecode to solve problems etc. What you are referring to is cracking which is illicitly modifying code to bypass securities etc. The original meaning of hacking is positive. It just got basterdized through the years.

i was using the word hacking as far back as 1982 when breaking into games on the Sinclair Spectrum (a uk home computer) to get infinite lives. that was definately a positive thing for our high scores. we used to take photos of the screen to prove that we had got the scores we claimed too so it has a photographic link even that far back. lol. daakhors

Oh but yes of course!! Silly me!! Hack=hackers!!! Makes sense!! ;)

@daakhors I used love to POKE my Sinclair Spectrum
Eggiwegs! I would like... to smash them!
daakhors posted Sat, 23 April 2005 at 12:53 PM
azy, i do hope you remembered to PEEK before you POKE. POKEing without PEEKing first could cause strange results! strangely the tune from Manic Miner is now in my head! regarding the book, i am not sure i would buy it on the strength of these examples, especially the 'convert your digital camera into a virtual digital SLR'. i suppose a month after the book comes out the same tips will be all over photography sites anyways. daakhorse
