Why are some posts gone without a trace and others have (delete) written next to the deleted posts? It is confusing to say the least.

Depends who deletes something. When a user writes something and decides to delete it later it remains with the "deleted" sign. When an admin deletes a post because it is for example against the TOS then it disappears without a trace.

One day your ship comes in - but you're at the airport.

thanks the moderator agiel wouldn't clarify this for me although I messaged him twice about it. Now I see why.

I wouldn't clarify it because I didn't get the chance to send you a reply. Moderators can delete messages from anyone but I thought they remained marked as 'deleted' for everybody else. I can't test that myself as I have advanced rights on the forum. Maybe I will create a test account and see how things look like for regular members when I get a chance. In that particular case, Shonner himself (herself?) deleted these posts. At least, I can see several posts deleted directly by that member. Maybe you should contact Shonner directly if you want to find out why the messages were deleted.

I just created a test account and it turns out I learned something new today :) Deleted messages are indeed invisible after they are deleted. If you are the one deleting your own messages, they are visible to you only. If I delete one of your messages, I can still see them as a mod but nobody else can. I hope this clarifies the confusion.

Thanks agiel that does help clarify.
