Yes, I know what you're thinking, and you ain't the first to say it. However, this is photography help..... Last night I went Karting. Apart from achieving the most impressive crash of the evening (yes, I'm in pain. stop laughing! I came an inch away from crushed testes coz of the steering wheel, that's serious stuff!!) I tried getting some pictures, and failed. Miserably. We've got another race on in a couple of months, a three hour endurance session where we each spend an hour on the track. The quick ones among you will notice I've got a couple of hours to spare, and seeing as it's only 'us lot' on the track, I'd like to get some pics that people can actually see. It's an indoor circuit, and the light is approx of a normal lit room. The karts are gas powered and reach up to 45-50 mph (If you use the barrier they stop pretty quick too ;-). Dilemma - how to get a decent shot in such low light? My digi has manual settings, last night I had it set at 400asa, used a decent external flash, bracketed settings all over the place but just COULDN'T get it. sigh Anything? Anyone? Pleeease? sobs quietly in corner (",)

It all depends on your camera. If you are using the "fastest" setting, then you may be out of luck. If you have manual controls, you could try stopping down as well and though they will be dark, you might be able to recover the image in postwork. I used to shoot outdoor sports at night...a flash is useless. My best advice to you is get a pro DSLR that goes up to ISO1600 (yeah, right) or beg, borrow, or steal a good old fashion film camera and get some high speed film for it. ...And yes, you most certainly need help. ;) Take care of the fellas there, I know how painful that can be. --Kort

High ISO, fast SHUTTER...that should do it. :)...looks like yer gotta pull all the stops on this one Mike....pun intended...lol

I wish I was doing that too. We have useless karting here,and the track I used to like has closed. The best advice I think I could give you is to make sure you are only going for close up shots. That lighting is not good for the distant ones.

local sports photographers here at school night games all use a strobe. They swear by it...so much for input on high speed sports shots. Then, they are taking images of USA style football and basketball, people up close and "perhaps" not as fast as the karts.

Mike...yer need to get a cam (a fast lens also would come in handy) that can keep up with the action and need good panning skills too :) Where yer live again?

Oh, bugger. Bad news is, Judging by my experiments with the camera I don't stand a cat in hells chance of any decent shots. By switching lights off in the office and blocking windows, then rolling cars across the floor we simulated it and it didn't go well. The Good news is that today a couple of the guys asked if anyone was taking a camcorder.... and I've decided to splash out and spend the company's money on one of those new DVD ones. I'm gonna buy it off the company, with a reduction for using it for training vids ;-) he he he.... damn shame they don't need an SLR... *sigh* Anyways, we're gonna knock up DVD's of the event and sell them to the guys at a nominal price, thus starting a trend for all future company events. Gimme 2-3 years, it'll have paid for itself..... ah, and people call me stupid.... lol Tom, I read about using a strobe too, but I wouldn't wanna put any of them off while they were driving. Would I?!? he he he soul, I actually got the fastest lap time on our team, which musta been during the laps when I wasn't assaulting the barrier... but I'm not exactly in the queue to threaten Shumacher...
