Wings exports .obj's. like if you have a cube and a sphere, even if they're the same default material, they export separately and bryce 5 imports them separately (yet grouped). Bryce 5.5 not only imports them as ONE mesh, but doesn't seem to handle material settings very well. Like if you give three objects three different materials, Bryce 5.5 only recognizes one of them and the other two meshes are again together. and for the cherry on the cake, if you have two spheres in wings, let's say, and you give each of them two different materials, they won't be imported as two spheres with two materials each, they will be imported into 5.5 as two groups of two meshes (each material respectively). you add one more material, and that's not recognized. one major GRRRR for me, one possible GRRRR for those who use other modelling apps. drac

Thats why, I'll stick with version 5 :P After hearing everything about 5.5 I'lll.. not risk it.. ^^;
draculaz posted Tue, 03 May 2005 at 9:59 AM
well no, what i did was import it into 5, export it as an obp and save it into 5.5. rendering IS faster. once all the bugs get fixed it'll be a good program.
Shaddex posted Tue, 03 May 2005 at 10:12 AM
The faster rendering is what I'd like.. but.. I'd rather wait til the bugs are worked out before messing with getting it.. Until then.. I just settle for randering an image when I'm in bed or out for the day so I'm not stuck sitting at a comp for a few hours waiting ^^;

That is a very solid reason for me to wait 'till 5.5.1.

OK - Bryce now reads Material groups as well as the old Poly Groups. This is for Poser/D|S compatibility. If an .OBJ has both, which is very common, then Bryce 55 reads only the Material Group. Sounds like Wings works that way, To get back to the old way, run it through UVMapper, turn right around and export with the "UseMtl" option turned off. This will leave you with just the poly groups. I hope the choice of which one you want to use will be a dialogue option in B6 :-)

Oh - I still don't have the release version but with both Modo and FormZ .OBJ exports the 5.5 I have reads the material groups correctly as long as they have different names.

I am sorry to hear that particularly now i am just startign to use material groups and the like to make interesting models with procedurals. The other things I heard were minor. I heard soem other things abotu Obj import that make it sound weaker. I really woudl liek to be able to work in flat shaded mode to eliminate soem of the comon mistakes you get from looking at clouds of verticies and trying to put them down on a terrain.

Dan, didn't Bryce 5 split meshes by materials? It's too early for me to check, but I seem to recall having Poser figures exported as single object coming split into Bryce.

Yeah, this will all be corrected by some patch, I'm sure, as importing has always been such a strong attribute for Bryce in the past. Still, make sure DAZ hears this! AgentSmith

Thanks Drac for the heads-up on this potential problem with Bryce5.5! This would greatly concern me because I often import Wings models into Bryce5 without bothering to UV map them. It's so easy for me to save all the faces on a model into separate materials groups and texture them all in Bryce. This works on all simple models and some complex ones as well.
Would I be able to save a scene with several Wings-made models textured in Bryce as a Bryce 5.0 file and then import it into 5.5 with the material groups intact? Unless this, or some other workaround, such as a patch, make model import as easy as it was in 5.0, I see no reason to switch at this point.

Drac, either I don't understand what you did or you messed something. I just exported an obj from Rhino. Two gloves of three meshes and three different materials each. In LithUnwrap, I redefined materials and combined each glove into one mesh. Cinema 4D plugin Riptide, when told to split by group, gives me two meshes with three selections/materials. Bryce 5.5 gives me a group of six meshes, each mesh a different material. When I re-exported the model from Cinema, unchecking Export Groups, I got six meshes in Bryce again. So three materials became three meshes again.
