WOWWWWWW!!! That looks nice Cherokee69. Keep up the good work. It will look really nice when you get it finished, and placed with the garage and chicken coop. I'm sure Dr. Geep is beaming with pride in you. Just out of curiousity, how "heavy" is the resulting obj file? I want to create a house too, but was wondering if making it in Poser would result in a smaller obj, than in a modeler like Silo, Max, etc? Thanks, -The Starkdog

depends how detailed you model it the above appears to be every beam used in the frame of a real house and then adding walls? dont quite see point as the beams would be covered up? unless im wrong but whether its done in poser or another modeller, the obj file would be same size, its the same data, unless the model is changed into something different

If it wasn't for your tuts, I'd never have gotten this far.

That 4 sided morphing box is also used for the rafters so I could get the cut ends at the correct angle.

this is looking really great! i love the detail you're putting into it.
here's some humble suggestions to increase the reality of it (from my own building experiences):
chimney shouldn't be centered on the ridge, it should be offset so the ridgepole stays one piece (i see the original was on an outside wall) & i assume you'll be extending it to the ground in the final design.
don't forget nailers for the tin roofing.
some windows in the addition room still need cripple studs above & below.
roof trusses need crossbracing & gable end studs.

but i repeat: this is REALLY looking good. what a great project! kudos to you & to geep for his tutes.

Jan, Thanks for the suggestions. I realize there are some things that aren't right but, I'm copying the house that my grandparents built around 1920. The chimney is exactly where it is on the real house....plus, I have good reference...I'm living in it.

Running the ridge beam through the chimney is not a good plan and won't pass Code. I would recommend a program called Chief Architect at http://www.chiefarchitect.com/ for anyone seriously interested in architectural software.

Just so everyone knows, this house was built in 1920 when there weren't any strict building codes. And, as you can see, there is no ridge beam. I added one to help line up the rafters and as you can see in the about pic, if there had been a ridge beam, it would have gone through the center of the chimney.

Editorial Note -

Fireplaces were built in the center of a house so that the house would have "central" heating; maximizing the amount of heat that stayed inside the house and radiated in all directions.

A fireplace built on the outside wall of a house will lose some of it's heat to the outside and would not be as efficient.

I have to say for a house that was build in the 1920 it still looks very strong and sturdy.Your Grandfather did a excellent job:)

More work. This time trying to get something done for the foundation.

And, yeah, the foundation vents are build from more Magic Boxes and you can actually see through them. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever get this house done.

Yep, still working on it. This time I'm working on the front porch. I had to lower the rafters because I had them too high. Took a wrong measurement in the attic. By lowering the rafters in the main roof sections, I had to rework the chimney because it was too tall after lowering the rafters. I've got 3 separate things going now and I'm surprised I'm able to remember where I am with each one...the house, the front porch, and the foundation. It's getting there...slowly but surely.

Hey Doc,

I've made sure everthing is created is the same spots. I've done some tests to make use everthing (house, foundation, and front porch) will line up correctly when they are all put together and so far, everything works good.

I really didn't think this one was going to take as long as it has. The other 4 buildings didn't take this long but, for me, it's worth it.

One of my relatives (he married my 1st cousin) is a local artist around here and he does alot of pen and ink drawings and watercolors of old building and homes around here. His web site is "here". He hasn't seen these buildings yet but when I get it all done, he will.

Keep up the great work on your house tutorial. I know you'll be glad when that one is done.

Made a little more progress on the porch along with the attic vent and the eve brackets. Got 3 more "boards" to add to the porch, then I can add materials and save it as a prop. Can't work on it but just a little bit at a time. It's so time consuming and sometimes get's on my nerves....LOL.

Doc, That's the reason it's taking so long, plus my work schedule takes alot of my time too and by the time I get home, sometimes I don't even feel like opening Poser to work on it. Anyway, since it's nice weather now, I hate being stuck inside. Wings3D? Nope, don't even understand how it use that or any other 3d modeling program. That's why I was so excited to be able to do this....in Poser. Got the IM and just replied. Stan

Here's a closer shot of the eve bracket and the attic vent. By the way Doc, the house and trim was painted white and that's how I want to do this. Now, white has a tendency to get "washed out" in Poser. What would you suggest to keep it from doing that? Thanks

Well, Since it's been raining for 2 days and I can't get outside, I've been messing with the front porch some more. My grandparents had lattice panels on 2 sides of the porch so I've done those along with a few other things.

More work. Started putting the siding one..that the white square next to the front door..only thing is, it's not a square, it's actually 6 siding boards but since the house is white, the defination lines where the board overlap just kind of disappear. Haven't yet figured out how to correct that problem. No, I didn't make the porch swing. I cheated on that one. It came out of a trim pack I had gotten from 3DC.

This is a close look at the siding boards. Maybe make the angle of the boards more pronounced?

Decided to do a little something different so using geep's Magic Box, half an arch from geep's arch tut, and a cylinder plus a custom Magic Box I made..I created one of the Adirondack Chairs my grndparents always had in their front yard. There were 2 chairs and a loveseat. Think it turned out looking pretty good. Going to make the loveseat next..then back to the house and the foundation.

Made a slight change to the shape of the arms. Looks more like the original's arms now. Yeah, isn't that odd Doc...someone needs to change some peoples minds a bit and get rid of that "Poser isn't a modeling program". Well, it's not just for posing...LOL
