Here's my latest one. Based on Darth Vader's Lightsaber, in honor of the last Star Wars film. There are 3 complete Bryce renders at the link. JohnThis is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.

Cool model Tjohn. Hang in there AgentSmith. I know that you will enjoy Wings and do some really cool things with it.

Ditto AS. Although lightsabers are fairly easy to model in Bryce, in my opinion (just my opinion). Of course, I have never come close to that in Bryce lol. Excellent model John. Wish I could do that in Wings (or any application, for that matter). sigh =)

a cylinder, some extrusions, some smoothing, some assigning of textures..it's easier than it looks (well, if you're Tjohn..;). There's no 'one' way to do things in Wings. I just started f*rting around with it, having come by way of other modeling programs, so mebbe I cheated..;) For those who want to try (hey, it's free, so what's the risk? aside from hours of time detailing the exhaust venturi's on..uh, never mind..;)..here's where to get it. And stop by the Wings forum, we're always open..I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

There's a whole load of lightsabers available for Poser, although I don't know exactly where I got them..... Mail me if you want them......

AS why modeling in Wings, when you can create the same things in Bryce with a better results? :P (no offense to tjohn the model is great)
shinyary2 posted Mon, 09 May 2005 at 11:02 AM
For me modeling in Bryce is sometimes more difficult, and sometimes you don't get better results. It just depends upon what you are doing. Even my first little ship in Wings would have been very difficult for me to do in Bryce, and would have been composed entirely of metaballs and would have taken up a rediculous (sp?) amount of memory. I certainly could not have had a whole fleet of them. But with my Wings model, it's better, faster and easier to make, and I can have an enormous fleet of thirty or so of the blasted things with no severe memory hits.

Vasquez: No offense taken, and thank you. But have you checked out some of the Wings modeling in the Wings Forum? There are some amazing modelers there, doing Daz/Poser quality organic models with Wings, things that would take months to do in Bryce, if ever (I haven't had much sucess with organic modeling, though. Maybe someday). I model in Bryce a lot, but the model above would have taken a lot longer for me in Bryce. I like the ability to extrude, etc. I used to model in Imagine before I got Bryce, and Wings tools are similar. If I had these abilities in Bryce (maybe in Bryce6 or 7?) I would do ALL my modeling in Bryce. John

Here's an example of the work I'm talking about. Check out the work in this gallery at the link. Teyon is amazing, and this is done in Wings. This is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.

oh nice. That looks great. Yeah, I like to look over the challenge entry WIPs in the Wings Forum. It's amazing what some people can do with Wings.

LOL tjohn I was pure and merely provocatory! I know that Bryce has it's limits... oh... I know it... Just everyone is winging at present and sometimes I become nostalgic.. Do you remember the 2 gladiators of Humorix?! or, please check my link, does it look organic? The MAIN thing that miss to Bryce is the possibility of exporting (according to me)... after that the sky (with a hoovering sphere) is the limit!!! Regarding Teyon I know his work, since he used Rhino, he is really a great modeler! Nice saber (again) I like it alotta! vasq (looking forward to see starwars in Italy)AgentSmith posted Mon, 09 May 2005 at 5:37 PM
Yup, the second Bryce can have some level of poly modeling and be able to export anything, it'll be a whole other world. ;o)

yup..you can do fantastic things in Bryce with Booleans (Bambam131's, for a start)..but, like Vegas, what's modeled in Bryce stays in Bryce..;) which is why I use Wings, because I can rig it for Bryce, or Poser, and share the models (if anyone ever asked..;), etc..

Well... technically you could share the *.obp model with other people--that is, people who have broadband =) This is the single most limiting feature of Bryce in my opinion. I mean, how hard could it be to put in a boolean export feature? They already have the polygon calculations built into Bryce; they need this in order to render things. They should have a "render to .3ds" or something of that sort =)
AgentSmith posted Tue, 10 May 2005 at 4:45 PM
Vue was the same way, although I believe now in at least their version 5 Infinite they can export more. (?) AS

AS, it's still bad but not as bad (Vue over Bryce I mean). Even if Vue can't export, it can still (I assume) import and it has much more innate functionality than Bryce, as I understand it. Also the rendering is WAY faster. If they added more export features for Vue, maybe there's hope for Bryce yet...

Although, if in Bryce 6, booleans are the only way to change/sculpt a polygonal object, Ill give up on the program forever. (Bryce 6 better have basic modeling tools)...can be very basic but it must have them at some level
shinyary2 posted Thu, 12 May 2005 at 10:25 AM
Oh... actually, just thinking about the way that Bryce renders things, that makes sense. Nevetheless, it still needs it. And I think that the raytracing could possibly be used to calculate polygon positions and rotations. Not sure about that, I don't know much about raytracing in practicality (I just know how it works in theory). Don't give up the program. Just don't upgrade. Personally, if they add dynamics, I'll still upgrade. By they better have better modeling abilities in v6, you're right.
