I've spent the better part of three hours trying to track down this info, and am now ready to just throw in the towel (it's not in the "Poser 4 Handbook," the Renderosity tutorial won't download). I'm looking for a simple explanation of the Poser file structure. What are rsr files, where do they go, and what (if any) is their relationship to the obj files? The same is true for the cr2 files (which I take to be files to help objects/props conform to other objects). As you can tell, I'm downloading a lot of models and props, and am having trouble figuring out where they go, and what directories they belong in. If you guys could tell me where this info is inside the POSER 4 documentation (I can't find the Advanced documentation online, either), I will be VERY appreciative. Thanks, Mike Mitchell Houston, Texas

Hi Mike, My name is Anthony, and I am the Senior Technical Writer at Curious Labs. I have recently embarked on a project to document not only CR2, but the entire Poser file format, since all file types use subsets of the same commands and are quite similar in form and, usually, function. This is a huge project, which will probably run well over 200 pages, most of it listing each valid command, so it's going to take several weeks to get a working draft together. And then it needs to be reviewed thoroughly, as I will not release inaccurate or incomplete information to the Poser community. I can tell you that library files typically go under Runtime:Libraries, in the appropriate folder (hair, pose, hands, etc.). Some of these have sub-folders corresponding to the sub-menus that appear in the Figure Library within Poser. For example, say you download a female character with CR2 and RSR file. Both files should go in your Runtime:Libraries:Character:Characters-Female folder (or other folder, if you created a new character category, such as :Downloaded_Characters. Whatever type of files you download, the "2" file (CR2, CM2, etc.) and RSR file go together in the same folder as described above. The OBJ geometry file typically goes in the Runtime:Geometries: folder, where is the name of your OBJ file. So, for example, if you download a character named Mitchell with the following files: Mitchell.CR2 Mitchell.RSR Mitchell.OBJ Then (unless a readme accompanying the download says differently), you would place the files in the following folders: Mitchell.CR2 and Mitchell.RSR = Runtime:Libraries:Characters: Mitchell.OBJ = Runtime:Geometries:Mitchell I believe this is accurate; I tried it on my system and it seemed to work. If I am wrong, let me know and I'll dig up the right answer. Hope this helps! Anthony Hernandez Senior Technical Writer Curious Labs

Hey Anthony, Boy could we keep you busy. Mike, RSR: There are two types of .rsr files. The one on the geometries folder next to your figure's obj and the ones in your library folder next to each entry. The .rsr. in the Geometries folder stoores additional reference information for the figure. The one in the libraries stores the picture you see when you open the libary. PP2 Prop files. These files store all the geometry, color, parent, and location information for a prop. It's like a .obj sitting in the library. HR2 These files are for storing props that are uniquely parented to the head and no other body part. OBJ These are geomtry files that the cr2's use to create the figure in your scene every time you load one from the library. CR2 These are the most important. These files tell poser how to make a object posable. It's like that song "..the shin bone's connected to the ankle bone...the ankle bone is..." It store all the information that allows a figure to actually bend, twist and morph. PZ3 This is a scene file. They are like a cr2 but they hold all the information the other formats can't share. A total package. I think that's about it. Forgive the typos. I type fast. Best of Luck, Anton AntonKisiel designs

If there is no folder structure in a zip file, and you are presented with two .rsr files, the larger one (Typically the same size as the .obj file up to 1/3 less in size) goes with the .obj file. The small one goes with the .cr2, .pp2, .hr2 etc. -Trav

On Macs, there are no RSR files, the same info is instead contained in the resource forks of files. A program (Maconverter) will take a download that says "PC Only" and convert it for use on a Mac. So most of those are not really "PC Only" at all... The others: CR2 is a figure, PZ2 is a pose, FC2 face, HR2 hair, HD2 hand, PP2 prop, LT2 light, CM2 camera. And PZ3 is a Poser scene.

I kept this image from the 'otica site. It is not mine and the image has contact info. Thanks to Geep for this.
